That wasn't what I took from that section. I think the point of that section, and the one after it about plagiarism, was that he thinks we programmers deserve what we've got coming, because of how our work has destroyed so many other kinds of jobs already, and how many of us have flagrantly violated copyright because we want our entertainment now and for free. And both of those sections did give me pause.

Also, I don't think all automation is equally bad. I've spent most of my career working on assistive technology for blind people. It's true that before personal computers, OCR, and ebooks, some people could get paid to read text aloud or transcribe it to Braille. But, on the whole, I think it's a good thing that those jobs are obsolete, because probably most blind people didn't have access to readers or transcribers. I guess it's possible my reasoning is self-serving though.
It still hurts me to see tables like this. While I learned that stuff (30 years ago) the base was 1024 instead of 1000.
Using 1000 for Memory like people do it for vegetables looks always like a marketing trick. Just a way to sell me less Memory For the same price. And it works. At just 1TB they embezzling 99511627776 Bytes.
All of these comments simply point out the fact that we should never have used metric prefixes to name binary numbers. Current technology is based on two and powers of two, not on ten and powers of ten! ( Although there might have been an advantage and it would be appropriate had we stuck with processors with 10-bit bytes and 20-bit words.)

It's June, so I've got my Javastation off the shelf for the first time in a couple of decades. This is a Javastation Krups, with 100MHz sparc, sold as a diskless workstation. I never realised it had a PPP ROM boot in! Anyway, I should get on and set up networking and a boot server. (Note: the plastic on the clips on the doors is fragile, 2 just pinged off on me)

@federicomena I mean, even with unidirectional data flow there still are signals passing values all over the place. You aren't protected from internal signals, and even data-modifying widget signals have a value.
@blandford yeah. I think a convenient thing about UDF is that you may get lucky and only have to ref/clone the single thing-which-receives-your-action-messages, not every single little bit of stuff that will get affected by the signal.

Quick suggestion. Could you kindly add a dropdown next to the [New Message] button, and when clicking the down arrow, it shows a new [Plain-text Message] menu entry?
This provides a visual hint which could really improve its accessibility. I really doubt if there is anybody can know there is a plain-text compose mode by shift+click the [+ New Message] button without consulting documentation.
