Hi all, my family and I could really use your help! Extended illness, no income while sick. We have nothing saved; we are still trying to catch up on bills from unemployment most of last year.
Current total funds as of 7/18: $124 (Money previously sent to us for bills went to food & unexpected vehicle maintenance.)
Urgent expenses:
* Funds for meals for the coming week. We are feeding 2 adults and 2 preteens. * Car Payment $567.83/mo × 3 (3 months past due, repossession efforts begin on 8/8) * Electric Bill $143.51 (Overdue 7/7, disconnect 7/21)
Less urgent, but still important:
* Water Bill $137.99 (Due 7/22) * Phone $229.04 (Payment arrangement, due 7/31) * Back property taxes payment $726 (overdue amount from 6/26, next bill 7/26)
We got the tire -- and two others, which we found out were about to blow when we went to get the other. That set us back about $400. We just paid down on the phone bill, $236, leaving us behind by $222, but it lets us keep it turned on. We still need a lot of help to keep the lights on and feed the kids, so please boost again if you see this.
If you've ever seen a minidisk, you know how reasonably small it is. The Crucial X10 8TB drive I picked up recently is not the size of a minidisk, it's actually smaller than it. I just find that incredibly impressive. I know technology is advancing so quickly, but I'm used to the size of standard NVME drives, which are long and ram-stick-like. The internals fascinate me but not enough to crack the thing open for well, reasons... I wonder if they stacked the nand in some interesting config inside the casing to get it so small? Is it even NVME at all? I know they come in multiple sizes, so maybe it's a few of the smaller sized chips instead. Anyway, sometimes I can still be impressed by today's tech. It's not just all stinky AI slop, you know?
ahaha. I have 8 terabytes here on a 24 Terabyte drive, all filled with TV shows (not pirated, of course, I don't condone that kind of thing!) I find it nuts. A 1080P television 40-minute show can take up roughly 1.5-2 GB of storage. Visuals ain't cheap, and most things are still encoding in H.264 because older player compatibility, H.265 and AV1 are slowly making it onto the stage but IMHO not fast enough. a 4K 2160P movie can easily take up 40-50 GB, store 30-40 of them and you've filled up 2 TB. So, yeah, I'm not surprised how quickly storage is expanding, because people (and data hoarders like myself) demand that kind of space. I now have 2 back-up drives, an 8 TB and another 12 TB, to store at least a duplicate of my 8 TB TV show / movie collection, because losing that (along with the 2-3 TB of archived full podcast series and audio described content) would really, really hurtt my soul so deeply I could never ever recover from the trauma of such data loss. Took years, maybe decades to build up.
@Tamasg @Brynify @pixelate Size of audio gets big fast. Not as big as video, but big none the less. Just 42 episodes of my own podcast in mp3 at 320 is over 2 GB. I keep the raw data around and all of that with edits is over 50GB.
@Brynify @pixelate yeah, a lot of audio folks I know like to keep the raw uncompressed audio of each channel recording on the podcast, add those together for 2-3 people and you're counting around 4-6 GB per hour easily. Just 2-3 months of that and you've probably filled up close to a terabyte, poof. Not wrong though, having that raw copy is really good for going back or if ever needing to make a part more clear in edit or (less ideally) later.
@Tamasg @Brynify @pixelate I keep: Original logic project which stays as.wav. Two mics usually, unless I bring the kids in. Mono 24 bit 48 K. Edited flac files , one cold copy without music, one copy with music. MP3 gets sent to platforms, so yeah. It adds up quickly.

there's a lot to like about Tiddlywiki but not if you want to use it in a way where you aren't just using some background html file sync between devices. If you want to access it *via a website*, every time you load it you're downloading a minimum of 2MB, much larger depending on how much data you have in there and possibly even file embeds (unless you use the File upload plugin thing and have it dump the files into S3/WebDav)
This sucks big time. If you have spotty data service you won't be able to open your "notes" reliably.
This is a huge red flag for me. If I only cared about using Tiddlywiki from one device it would be a pretty amazing solution though

Není to rozhodně tuctova detektivka stylu Jo Nesbo, ale chytilo mě to fest a sjel jsem to prakticky na 2 večery, přes to že je to celkem velká kniha. Chápu že ne každému to sedne, ale za mě fakt doporučuji tomu dát šanci.

unified push is not a priority because when unified push is allowed to run in the background, delta chat is allowed, too; and can handle its own background connection, which is less privacy-invasive. But feel free to add your arguments to the thread: support.delta.chat/t/implement…

The Google Play App review team has their own accounts. The Developer Console let's me enter test credentials. Sometimes they use those sometimes they just create new accounts. Depends on the individual reviewer.
The Play version doesn't have channel search. The only reason a reviewer would join a channel is that they explicitly entered the address or used an external search engine.
The last app update got rejected because the app hosts terrorist content.
@S1m maybe just check their IP addresses and if they match google IP range just limit what they can see… I recall some apps did stuff like that in AppStore to pass review. They even accessed device location for that

@wolff it becomes too speculative for my taste since there are so many more factors than just time. Time is mostly a factor to detect flaws, while there are countless factors that make a project introduce them.
An argument could be that when the median goes down, it is because there are more not-yet-found older bugs in there. Or maybe the quality is actually better over the last median years.
that's very reasonable. I was mainly thinking out loud about the possibilities with the metrics without thinking too much about the meaning of them, which is the important part about the graphs: to give meaning to data.

hey Daniel, I am trying to fix a problem with the internet that not enough people are talking about or doing enough to fix. the internet is built on and therefore relies on FOSS projects and if we don’t make sure an apocalyptic event happens because of a bug or backdoor, then it could literally happen as it almost has so many times now. I am so stressed out and terrified right now and if nothing is done to fix this then I’m actually considering jumping off the window of my home.

@sesivany @jorge Já jsem z dění kolem Universal Blue nadšen. Myslím, že perfektně Fedoru doplňuje. Jsou tam inovace, na které ve Fedoře nezbývá prostor. Každý den se mi honí hlavou, zda neudělat rebase na Bluefin, ale drží mě zpátky, že to mám jako pracovní stroj a vyladit čistou instalaci Silverblue mi naposled zabralo 4 dny.
#GrapheneOS is already based on #Android 16. They also deliver security fixes more quickly than Google itself.
Switching to GrapheneOS was the best phone-related decision I've made in years. I hope phones will be available for it in future. I just can't imagine going back to mainstream options that force you to choose between privacy and user freedom.
@zoul AFAIK it's just donations at the moment. They're also looking into working with an OEM partner and making their own phone because there are doubts how much Pixels will stay open in the future.
@zoul Them being based on Pixels and Pixels only is the only reason is stay away from GrapheneOS. I'm currently picking out a new smartphone, and am choosing based on LineageOS compatibility and support status. Much wider selection, although not as wide as I'd like. :)
do you use a sim card based phone number or voip services?
from my understanding, if using a sim card based number it is trivial for your sim provider (and law enforcement or anyone else they sell your data to) to have an entire location history of your device from cell tower pings
