This both real and a decent metaphor, so it is time for me to re-tell a story.

Ever heard of The Ping Of Death?

There was a couple of years there - years, hand to god - where you could throw a single malformed or too-large packet across the network at any IP you could see, and if you malformed it just right for its OS, you could crash the machine. You could kill a Windows machine with one line in cmd.exe.

It was bad, but almost nobody knows how bad.

Because you don't have a "network interface card", you have an ARM cpu, maybe even a whole-ass ARM SOC, handling ethernet frames on one side and talking PCI on the other.

You don't even have SD cards, because "memory cards" don't exist. That terabyte of storage the size of your thumbnail you bought? That's an ARM CPU managing the wear levels on its crap-ass flash backing storage while pretending to be a hard drive on the other side.

You don't know how many computers are in your computer.

This happens sometimes, screen readers (for good technical reasons) don't really understand the concept of something being visually covered by another object.

You can sometimes do extremely fun stuff because of this, like reading the personal data of some random customer that somebody didn't properly remove from their contract template. Or chitchat between the editors of your textbook.

🇬🇧 UK & 🇦🇺 Australia have the worst anti-encryption laws among democratic countries.
🇨🇦 Canada risks joining them with Bill C-2.

Putting Switzerland in a worse position than "EU" seems far fetched to me. Is the statement: "Switzerland is no longer the privacy paradise it was claimed to be." your only source of making it "orange" on your map?

There is a great risk that "Chat Control" will be applied in EU. What´s "green" about that?

There has to be worse threats to Switzerland regulations than "Chat control" then. Could you please enlighten me...

Yes! Chat control has been updated... for now. But the "discussion" is still very real in many of EU:s countries of how to undermine the encryption .

What I'm gathering currently being discussed in Swiss (and not decided yet) is that providers might in the future need to "retain metadata—who you talk to, when and where—without breaking encryption"

So, revise your map, and make Swiss Green AND make a separate dystopical "What might come"-map where you can make both EU and Swiss orange

I just informed Envision that I am cancelling my preorder of the Ally Solos Glasses. It's been stuck in Customs for ten f*cking days, even thoguh I filled out a largely inaccessible PDF form that was absolutely atrocious and complicated. I also told Fedex that I am refusing reception. of the package. With that hassle with a shipment alone, I simply don't trust them to be able to handle things if the glasses need repairing. Furthermore, I've read too many less than favorable reviews. I find the app itself unnecessarily complicated, and the combination with the glasses seems to make matters even worse. Nope, I want my money back, thank you very much.

Good on you. I think that maintainers' wasted time should absolutely be called out. Companies have simply thrown a blabberbox at people and told them to "use it". It doesn't mean the human using LLM tools absolves themselves from responsibility when they waste people's time. If we start a car, don't steer properly, and then drive into someone's garden we're responsible for the damages too, right?

Well it seems I will be presenting @badgefed at #fosdem on the #socialwebfosdem track!

This was a long-shot and honestly it will make my logistics very difficult, the week before I will be travelling with my family to Mexico. So probably, will take the kiddo to the junior track!

20 mins of presentation but honestly I am looking forward to the networking. See you at #fosdem26 from the #PNW!

And make sure to attend and say hi if you are there, I will be giving you badges!

I was chatting with a Black friend of Jamaican heritage. She was appalled that a Nigerian she'd met knew next to nothing about slavery.

It's Black history! she said.

It's *your* history, I explained.

For Africans that sad story ended when the ships left the shore. Our schools teach us about the impact of that devastation, not what happened on the other coast.

Black history is not one thing. It's not MLK.

It's also Songhai and Benin. Which they don't teach here

I'm not saying that the story of slavery is not important. Personally I've done my best to learn about it; mostly because I now live in a country shaped by it.

But there is so much human history. I have sympathy for people who have learned one bit of it, but not the other.

(Was thinking about this because I saw an exchange where someone was being upbraided for not knowing about American racism - even though they weren't American or Black.)

Are you looking for a new challenge? Would you like to be part of a great team - and work remotely? ISC is looking for a QA engineer for our Stork graphical management tool for DNS and DHCP!

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply at isc.recruitee.com/o/stork-qa

I've just pushed Tor integration in Libervia (first step of the NLnet metadata reduction and serverless grant).

nlnet.nl/project/ServerlessXMP…

This has been done thanks to the work of @meejah on `txtorcon` and of course of @torproject and the support of @nlnet and @NGIZero .

A thought for Lunar who is mentioned in the documentation of txtorcon (for doing the Debian package) and who passed away last year.

I'm going to try and stop watching short-form content online.

I gave up watching tiktok a number of months ago, and now it's time for Reels and YouTube Shorts to go as well.

I have a theory that they trigger the same areas of the brain that gambling lights up.. and it's not so much about the watching, but about swiping to see if you ✨win✨ by finding something fun. I noticed that I'd be watching something I was enjoying and just swipe anyways to see if the next clip was ✨better✨, which feels like classic gambling behaviours.

Ugh! Well, figured out after many hours of learning and troubleshooting that I have yet another piece of equipment that doesn't do what I want even though it theoretically should! The whole point of me getting a USB Mixer was so that I could choose what analog inputs do and don't get routed over USB to the machine it's connected to. An Audio Interface such as my Evo will route everything or nothing, so that wasn't the ticket. turns out, though, that USB analog mixers do not do this, either and that is what this one is. What I apparently want is either a digital mixer or hybrid mixer with a routing matrix. So, guess I'll be taking a trip to Guitar Center with these two things when I get back from TN and see if I can sell them.

Modular thingies are cool when they work right.

I just configured a new Ubiquiti wireless access point... well, actually an old one that was taken out of service last year when I wasn't home to fix broken things. It was easier to replace it than to walk someone through getting this one working again because of how it was mounted and such.

Anyway, adopted it to the controller, and devices automatically roamed to it. Then when I upgraded the firmware, those devices roamed back to where they were, then back again when it came back online. Nothing actually dropped for long enough to cause a noticeable problem.

Now I need to actually install this AP where it's meant to go, re-replacing the one it originally replaced. LOL!
