LibreOffice 24.2, recently released, brings an assortment of welcome accessibility improvements. It's encouraging that LibreOffice accessibility is finally receiving more attention than has been the case in recent years. It's what I use under Linux whenever I need to access office application file formats for reading or editing.

There are TLS servers that don't send the required close_notify alert message in certain conditions. #Google web servers do this if they think the that recipient isn't interested about the message body and no connection keep alive is set. Examples of such connections would be requests that end up with 0 byte message body while:
• HTTP/1.0 without "Connection: keep-alive" header or
• HTTP/1.1 with "Connection: close" header

This can cause some complications since #OpenSSL 3 defaults to erroring out if the close_notify is missing.

SSL_OP_IGNORE_UNEXPECTED_EOF option was added to enable talking to these non-compliant servers. Enabling this option removes truncation attack protection - so this option should really only be used when absolutely necessary. However, unless if you control the servers being talked to, you probably need to enable this option for now.

So why does Google terminate connections without close_notify? Likely it is done to save some resources when tearing down TLS connections. If you have billions of connections going on all the time, even some small savings add up quickly.

Hello, Fediverse!

Introducing Mycorrhiza, a free self-hosted wiki engine, developed by @bouncepaw and the numerous contributors. It features file-based storage, history, a custom markup language, categories, among other features.

Common use-cases: digital gardens, personal websites, diaries, documentation, encyclopediæ. The project is like 3 years old, so it is probably stable enough.

Take a look: mycorrhiza.wiki

It might be available in your OS's repositories.

It's clear that the name of my AccessKit project (github.com/AccessKit/accesskit) is a recurring stumbling block. When mentioned without appropriate context, it carries the connotations of being an Apple API. Plus, there's actually another AccessKit, which ranks higher in a DuckDuckGo search: accesskit.media/

So I'm actually thinking about renaming my AccessKit. The best names I can come up with are:

accesslib
libaccess
a11ylib
liba11y

None of those are particularly inspired.

in reply to Matt Campbell

Hmm, I don't think I'm going to come up with a better name than "libaccess". And for the target audience of hard-core systems programmers that I want the library to appeal to, it's probably a perfect name. I know that, among old-school Unix programmers, mixed-case names like AccessKit have an association with "marketing weenies" [1], so this would take care of that as well. And "libaccess" is available as a domain name under all the major TLDs.

If you need, or just enjoy, sound effects and royalty-free music, there's a great resource full of them at zapsplat.com/?aff=11 where MP3s are free and full quality wavs can be had for the price of a coffee a month or a takeaway a year. Plus, signing up for gold via the link in this post gives me a commission at no extra cost, which is a really great help and support.
