Join us to protest rideshare discrimination against blind people using guide dogs and white canes. Uber and Lyft have not met their obligations to ensure that blind individuals are not discriminated against. So, we are organizing a rideshare rally in San Francisco on October 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

With pleasure I'm using @MetaGer@suma-ev.social with a key.

But it's a little bit annoying to enter the key every time starting the browser, even if the addon is installed.

Is there a way to prevent this?

Please do not add genAI images to punch up your writing. You might think that it adds a nice little bit of visual pizazz to your content-marketing piece, but what you're actually doing is *making it look like content marketing* rather than a useful resource. To the extent that content marketing is an effective tactic, it is because you build trust with the customer by providing them valuable information. A genAI turd plopped on top of your writing is a signal that it will be worthless slop.

Oh no. I have learned that all the apple major OS releases are landing today. but they're not available now. time to spend the rest of the day like I've got a brief tax appointment at 2:30PM, which is to say, pointlessly fretting and doing nothing blog.glyph.im/2014/09/the-hori…
in reply to Glyph

Well that makes me feel a little better about waiting until a week ago to get serious about preparing for macOS Sequoia.
in reply to Matt Campbell

I'm guessing you don't actually have to do anything about Sequoia in your projects though; there's just the distraction of installing it.

I have to say, this clause rather annoys me, even though I fully understand the reasons behind it: “X may still sometimes give inaccurate responses, so you may want to confirm any facts independently”. Let’s stand back and think about this for a moment. What is an average user supposed to do with this?
“Sometimes”? When exactly? "you may want to confirm any facts independently”? Which of the facts? Independently? Where?

No one could have predicted that electing a former cop as mayor of a big city would lead to more cop violence and more fascism (mask bans).

Nobody would have predicted that.

in reply to The Gym Nerd

@TheGymNerd this is it, the DMA only covers the European Union and thus Facebook fulfills it by providing the interfaces for Article 7 DMA only for users in the EU.
in reply to Netzagent

@markus @TheGymNerd yup. so: given Meta won’t open the APIs to allow interop with any non-EU residents, this blog post is intended to gauge interest in a bridge given that limitation.
in reply to The Matrix.org Foundation

@markus @TheGymNerd Personally I only use WhatsApp to talk with people from within the EU so I'd definitely still be interested, but I really don't like giving up my privacy for it.
in reply to The Matrix.org Foundation

@markus just opening this up for users in the EU would be ok for me but giving them my client IP just for that is actually the problem.

Also I don't really get the contract part that Individual Matrix instances and Meta would need to sign. What kind of contract would that be? Will they sign contracts with self hosted people?

What a set of headlines, can't get any more dystopian than that. The rich go into vanity trips into space, while the common people down below drown.

I wonder how many of us, if we could, would pull the trigger and eradicate all our kinks, all the dark things we hide and get off to in the silence of a long night. How many of us would pull that trigger...and what would remain of us after we did?
in reply to Blink With A Kink

Can't deny I thought about it, and would have done it in the past. These days... No, I don't think so, but I'd be tempted.

Homelessness should be illegal, but for the state, not the Homeless. If your State is run so poorly that you have a significant number of Homeless, then you are committing a crime against the people that live there. You've let rent get higher than wages, you aren't adequately funding mental and physical Healthcare, you're under providing Unemployment benefits and Disability, you're not regulating unnecessary layoffs.

Are there going to be a few people who still choose Homelessness, maybe, but these are problems with solutions 99% of the time.

Looking at plans on masto.host, it's hard not to wonder if I should just be signing up there instead of hosting my own. If their user estimates are accurate, $40 could get me a VPS that I'd have to maintain myself, or it could get me a hosted Mastodon server suitable for approximately 500 users. This is where I literally put my money where my mouth is, I guess. I don't really want to hand over the hosting control--that seems to defeat some of the purpose of having my own server--but it's certainly cheaper than expected.
I expect I'll be doing this my own way or not at all though.
in reply to simon.old

I did this for a while, but stopped for the same reason you outlined -- I guess I’m a control freak

I'm about to redo my Linux installation on my 2015 Macbook air, so for fun, I'm removing as many packages as possible while the system is still booted. It's the equivalent of rm -rf / but a lot more methodical. I already got rid of grub* and linux*, which has almost certainly made the system un-bootable, but it's still booted for the moment. Then I ran a loop to get rid of the largest installed packages one at a time, to avoid any "I will not remove essential system packages" errors. Somehow, the system is still running.

Attention all #macOS users of #RemoteIncidentManager:
As you may be aware, Apple is releasing macOS #Sequoia today. Every effort is being made to ensure Remote Incident Manager’s readiness for Sequoia as soon as possible. At the time of writing, we are hard at work addressing some challenges brought about by Sequoia. In particular, a new permissions condition currently strongly impacts the long-term viability of unattended sessions on Mac targets. The remote accessibility module on Mac targets has also been impacted. We are currently in talks with Apple support concerning these issues, and it is our hope to have a solution ready in due course. However, at this time, we strongly recommend remaining on macOS Sonoma if at all possible. We further recommend that you advise any Mac users you provide support/training to to hold off on updating to Sequoia as well. We will keep you apprised of further developments, and will give an all clear once Rim can be pronounced fit for use on Sequoia.
We apologize for any inconvenience, and we thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Am I the only one who thinks pass keys are completely overrated? As a user of a password manager, and 2fa everywhere I can, I don't see where these should be more secure. And cool, they are stored somewhere randomly on my device, or something, but idk if they can be synced between my iPhone and my PC and what this all should be generally.
in reply to Jonathan

They’re pretty great if you sync them in your password manager, then it's 1-click login everywhere.

Is it me, or is this the first time that a MacOS version was released simultaneously with the iOS and iPadOS software versions?
in reply to Rich Yamamoto

Tech journalists have commented on how early Apple is releasing macOS this year. It was definitely a surprise.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt Oh no, I just saw Mike’s email about RIM and that was the first time I saw that they were releasing it early like this.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt I don’t doubt it. The one drawback to this is that you didn’t have time to prepare for what could break and what would already be broken.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt I’m honestly excited about that, it will definitely help with synchronization across things like Notes, Messages, etc. I’m not complaining, but it makes me wonder if that thing was rushed.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt Personally, I hope this is here to stay. It’s always aggravated me that the release dates have been different, especially when there are features that are designed to sync up with each other.

@Tusky new bug i started experiencing in past few weeks: if i start a post, then switch over to the web browser to check something, then go back to tusky, the post-in-progress disappears entirely & isn't saved in drafts. using android with the most recent update.

Hi! Sorry, we have identified it as a bug, and we are working to solve it.

This is a short tutorial video on how to receive events/tasks almost instantly from your @nextcloud on your Android device using DAVx⁵ and our new Push functionality.

1. You'll need to activate this Nextcloud app:

apps.nextcloud.com/apps/dav_pu…

2. Install a @unifiedpush distributor on your Android, then select it in the DAVx5 settings.

3. Deactivate and reactivate a calendar resource in DAVx5 in the details view of a resource and wait 5 seconds. "Subscribed" should appear, and you're ready.

Outstanding work, this is a very welcome change.

Followed the tutorial and now see Push Support as Subscribed for CalDAV entries. Should the Push Support info also show for CardDAV? So far not seeing that info in CardDAV.

So I'm still working on my Woms clone for the browser, all free software and all that good jazz.

I'm tempted to write a little blog post on what I've done so far. It would mostly be around

1) destructible 2d terrain
2) particles
3) pixi.js and physics

Would that be interesting to folks?

😲 Kyle Kabasares, a Physics PhD graduate working at NASA's Ames Research Center, gave the methods section of his research paper to ChatGPT O1 Preview and asked it to generate the code based on the description. After just six prompts, it produced a working version of the code that took him a year to develop during his PhD. #ChatGPT #LLM #ML #AI youtube.com/watch?v=M9YOO7N5jF…
in reply to Chi Kim

All I can say is "WTF?"! Oh no... That's going too far... LOL
in reply to victor tsaran

@vick21 He has PhD in Physics. I have no idea if he has extensive background in programming, or how complex his code was. I guess the point is that if you know how to ask with the right prompt and quality check the output from LLMs, someone like him doesn't have to spend a year on coding and instead focussing on something else. Having said that, I have o1-preview, and it's great! The main drawback is you only get 30 messages per week. :)
in reply to Chi Kim

Do we know for sure that OpenAI was not already trained on his code? Curious then, if the machine would be able to produce that same code without having ever seen it? :)
in reply to victor tsaran

@vick21 He raised that question in the video. He said he migrated his code to Github, but it's a private repo. Maybe Microsoft handed over private repos to OpenAI too? lol Even if the model had his code as part of training data, he was very impressed with the output.
in reply to Chi Kim

I heard about One's capabilities from coWorkers. They are quite impressed. I don't have Plus subscription though...

I grew up a few km away from the border to France. My classroom was 100 meters away from the Rhine. I was in 9th grade when they opened the borders. I was in 12th grade when they introduced the Euro. Visiting other countries in the EU suddenly felt truly magical. "Fuck you" to all politicians in this country who are currently destroying this magical idea for pure populism, to appease some fascists. It's all about staying in power - as if that helped - and I couldn't despise them more for it.

Chrome on the Mac uses less battery than Safari

It's one of the most pervasive common wisdoms shared all over the web, no matter where you go - it's one of those things everybody seems to universally agree on: Chrome will absolutely devastate your battery life on the Mac, and you should really be using Safari, because Apple's special integration magic pixie dust sprinkles ensures Safari sip

Impulsos bienvenidos y agradecidos.
