Constantly persisting everything in a web form to localstorage in case of browser, tab accidents is such a cheap and effective trick!

Someone just linked me to this analysis on the war in Gaza from the viewpoint of international humanitarian law: dohainstitute.org/en/Lists/ACR…

took a survey today in a fairly serious context which included the following question: "Do you identify as having a disability?" WTF? I'm confused. You either do or you don't in almost all cases. Fuck off with that.
in reply to Blink With A Kink

I dislike wokeness, but this makes sense to me. Imagine a person not legally classified as disabled because of bad laws, but still considering themselves as such.

To me, the question of whether you are legally considered disabled and whether you consider yourself as such are distinct, and it's worth emphasizing this distinction IMO.

It’s almost like #Israel has a Dahieh doctrine, first developed in #Lebanon, in which targeting and destroying civilian infrastructures is literally the military strategy.

Does this break international law? Well, of course.

Does it matter? Of course not, this is Israel.

Seeking advice from those who are familiar with the Wordpress.com desktop app for Windows with a screen reader.
I'm running Windows 11 23 H2, the September build of JAWS 2024 and NVDA 2024.4 RC1.
For years, I had successfully used version 6 of this app with JAWS with no accessibility issues. As it had been a long time since the app alerted me about any updates, I went to wordpress.com to see if newer versions were available and, as I suspected, there was a new version, that being 8.0.4. I downloaded and installed it over my older 6.0.3 installation. After installing it, I noticed that, while the JAWS virtual cursor was enabled, JAWS was not able to detect any readable text, even after maximizing the window and doing a screen refresh. The only way I could get the virtual cursor to behave in an expected way was to activate the touch cursor and click on an element with numpad enter. This would allow me to read text using the virtual cursor and everything would appear to be back to normal until I exit and restart the app, once again with no readable text. NVDA exhibits similar results.
I decided to uninstall v8.0.4 and reinstall v6.0.3. After doing this, JAWS couldn't even read any of the screens, even with the touch cursor. Has anyone seen this behavior with the Wordpress.com app and are there any possible solutions?

What other stories did the LATimes or WaPo didn't publish because of their billionaire owners? Will we ever know?

Problem solved, a kind and friendly person at Bookshare customer support was able to recover my old account. I'm in!
in reply to 👩‍🦯The Blind Fraggle

Congratulations; great news. I love Bookshare. They're one of my favorite libraries, along with the Internet Archive.

Change in Help Files: Gave the sifting help file a little love.

I don't know if it's just me, but I've noticed a growing trend of drivers (who I call 38's) who feel 'safe' driving at 38mph. They do this in 20mph, 30mph, and 40 mph limits and the odd 50mph - because they feel safe at this speed. I think it's the same people who hog the middle lane even when the left-hand lane is clear. They sometimes accelerate to 50 on Motorways and dual carriageways, but only when it's safe to do so. Has anyone else seen this?
in reply to RalphStark

check your Speedo against a downloaded GPS app or one of those signs they have in villages. 2 mph over reading
in reply to John_Loader

I am having a problem with the word Speedo in this context. I keep wondering WTF swim suits have with GPS apps.

Yes, I figured it out.

It's quite hard to look at the current situations with Musk and Twitter, Bezos and the WaPo, and the LA Times as anything other than evidence that the extreme consolidation of wealth is itself a grave and direct threat to society

Called Bookshare because I realized I actually had a few questions they could help me with, and of course had to leave a message. Ah well, I still feel alright about things. Even if I have to start from scratch, it won't be that bad. Hardest part will be getting and sending proof of disability. It's $79 per year, which sounds scary, but it's really not. Free would be better, obviously, but it's a lot less than Audible!
in reply to 👩‍🦯The Blind Fraggle

Anyone can use the Internet Archive. However, they have a section to allow people with qualifying print disabilities to borrow copyrighted books. If you want to use that feature, that's when proof of disability is required.

For everyone talking about the new Discord sounds, I believe they're just active around Halloween. :) They should return to normal in November.

"I think it is a bit unfair you get nine lives," the dog said.

"That's a myth," said the cat.

"I've seen you do things that would kill me, and walk off as if nothing happened."

"Exactly."

"Huh?"

"You just have to be more confident than Death."

"Just?"

"What? Like it's hard?"

iOS 18.2 beta: New daily sudoku games come to Apple #News+ 9to5mac.com/2024/10/25/sudoku-…

I'm so thrilled! Newt is all fully loaded with books, set up and ready to go! He works like a charm and is wonderfully easy to use. Things I like: the sound quality is wonderful, lovely and clear. There's none of that bleeping when you press a button. There's no silly warning message when you turn up the volume. The file exploration setup makes it very quick and easy to find things. The Ivona voice is miles better than anything the stream ever had! The only thing it doesn't have is a ten minute time jump which is sometimes useful, but that's a minor thing with which I can deal. All in all I'm just over the moon and so thankful.
in reply to Sean Randall

@DerryLawlor @brian_hartgen Not drm protected ones, of course. No kindle books or Kobo files direct, but if you can strip the DRM off them and get regular unprotected ePub you'll be good, if you're an Ivona fan.
in reply to Brian Hartgen

@brian_hartgen @DerryLawlor one thing I can't see from the sales literature is if you can download extra voices on the device itself, given that it has wifi, or if you need to do that with a computer.

Also is there a way of adding content wirelessly outside of something like a talking book service?

in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo @DerryLawlor I don't think you can do the things that you want, but we're not interested in using the players in either of those ways so I've not investigated it.
in reply to Brian Hartgen

@brian_hartgen @DerryLawlor just curious, really.
I'm happy enough with my old rockbox stuff for me, but I always like to know what the things in the market can do.
in reply to Brian Hartgen

@brian_hartgen @DerryLawlor do you really have to hold the off button for 10 seconds to power down? I think I'd get finger ache!
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo @brian_hartgen @DerryLawlor You do have to hold it, but it doesn't usually take ten seconds. With my wonky hands I thought I'd have trouble powering up and down, but I honestly don't.
in reply to Sean Randall

@DerryLawlor @brian_hartgen Not downing on evo but if price is an issue and you want Ivona, a fire tablet is much cheaper. As in 60 quid for the 7 inch one. Obviously buttons are far better than a touchscreen and you won't get the battery life, recording quality etc etc, but if you were looking just to listen to ebooks with that synthesizer, it's a thought.

#mona web browser tip. Greetings everyone. Here is an awesome tip that I feel will help people who view websites in the Mona app. If you like the Safari reader mode, access settings in the Mona app. Then tap on web browser and turn on safari reader. This will open any link within Mona and will invoke reader mode. This saves having to tap on page options then tap reader mode. This has made browsing links much faster and I love this particular feature within the Mona app.

Yeah, that same setting exists for me when using Toot! I like it. It's easier to use default browser to view links.

can someone explain to me what is a federated timeline? I'm too lazy to look it up :D
in reply to Danielle✨🦄

It is the public timeline, where everyone sees, everything that has the public privacy from different instances. Like your post for example. It's public, it showed on my federated timeline. Say, you have home, which is like your little house and you choose who to invite, meaning, whoever you follow, you'll see their posts.
The local timeline, is the place I'd call your city, you live in a city, meet people, etc. Now, the federated timeline is where all the softwares connect. Say on a scale that is, different countries connected, who each have their cities, and houses, or neighbourhoods. So yes, there are four privacy options: unlisted, which are posts that will show up on your profile but not in the public/federated timeline, there are local_only posts, that will only show up on your instance's local timeline, the city, and not all instances have those, so it's a bit different, then you have followers-only, which only shows the posts to those who follow you or you follow. and they can't boost them. Then, there is direct, which is like a DM. the local_only option I mentioned above, is like an emoji, it is not a standard option in general. For example, my sintance and software, give the ability to only show public posts in my profile, not even unlisted, however, Mastodon does not have this option, but I am not using Mastodon. All these different softwares connect via a protocol, called activity pub. Say like, the internet connects the world. Haha I hope this helped.

It occurs to me, and not for the first time, that gift retailers are amongst the worst offenders for gendering.

The number of sites with "Gifts for him" and "Gifts for her", , is enough to make my teeth itch, and then I come across things like this and I want to scream:

"Higgs Boson coasters - gifts for him - Fathers' Day Gift - God Particle - Science gift - Particle Physics - Physics gift - boxed gift set"

#WTAF?

#wtaf
in reply to Léonie Watson

Is your objection that the "gifts for him" section includes items dealing with physics or is it that they are singling out specific genders?
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield
The latter. The idea that a physics gift is for men, or (for another common example) that self-care/spa products are for women, is just excruciating - never mind that the classifications/filters ignore people who are NB entirely.
