So, hold on a minute...the actual president, Biden, says he will not enforce the TikTok ban, yet TikTok goes dark for a day anyway.

TikTok's error message says don't worry, the guy who is NOT president yet, Trump, will restore it soon.

TikTok comes back up after a day, while the actual president, Biden, is still in office.

TikTok's greeting message says hooray, thanks for bringing us back, guy who is NOT president yet, Trump!

...How does this even work, again? And why are Americans so ignorant that they'll buy it? 😒 #uspol #politics

in reply to Tehuti

the problem is that they are buying it. Lock, stock, and barrel. I guess they were buying it by voting Trump back in in the first place.

Monday.
Another cold start to the week. Even if it is going up to 5 today, it doesn't flippin' feel like it.

Medically I am just not there, either. My head's not been in the game. I Normally suffer with 3 day migraines, and although I've been medicating to get through the weekend it's been a struggle. I'm on the tail-end, now, but I'd still far rather be in bed!

Nothing outstanding this week to shout about. A couple of online things post-work tonight and Wednesday, The Djokovic Alcaraz quarterfinal on Wednesday morning, actually playing tennis after work on Thursday.
The shape of a typical but slightly slow-starting week.

in reply to Sean Randall

Hi Sean. Sorry that Migraine's still hanging around, really hope it leaves soon. Have a great day.
in reply to Lulu Hartgen

@lulu_bear :) Thanks, Lulu. Sorry the game didn't go as well today, hopefully better next time!

Merry Christmas, goats!

Every year, an acquaintance texts us sometime in January and asks if we want their Christmas tree for the goats. The goats love the little change in diet so much that they even came out (briefly) in the -40 windchill to sample, before going back to snuggle in the straw in the barn.

"We'll send you job listings based on your resume and/or your saved searches."
This line in the email of one of my job platforms should probably replace and/or with just or. I uploaded my resume, and not only did it not recognize I had a recurring search going but... it wildly misread my resume. No, I am not an account executive. Nothing on my resume says account executive. Knock that off.
So now, let's see what happens when I nuke the resume from orbit. Do what I pay you for, damn you.
Have I mentioned the only thing worse than job searching is being unemployed? Because this.
in reply to James H

It's pretty accessible, too, and you can make your resume there, and then export it in dock or pdf I think pdf, but yeah it was really interesting to do. Particularly because I used to do resumes manually.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis I've only ever done resumes manually, but I mean if I needed one in a hurry, that's what LinkedIn and Indeed are for.
in reply to James H

I think I wanted to try out indeed, but I never understood how it worked. I haven't used linkedin though, but I wonder if you could import stuff into it. I think not.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis You can't import stuff into either LinkedIn or Indeed, but most of the time it's pretty much a copy/paste. Both LinkedIn and Indeed are basically a copy of the manual resume I have. And I do that for a couple reasons. First, because on LinkedIn you can then discover and network with people you work with (I still talk to a few people from my old job that way), and second, because both platforms let you apply for jobs directly from there.
in reply to James H

@tardis I stand corrected, actually. You can import stuff into Indeed if your resume is formatted correctly. I don't think you can for LinkedIn though. At least I didn't.
in reply to James H

Interesting, and based on the fact they all have different standards, I won't be able to import mine, but hey, you might. Haha.
in reply to James H

I should invite you to Europe! Visit my country in the middle of nowhere and get fattened with food. ;) Hahahaha.
in reply to James H

Oh but I do! I am evil. There are some cool places in EU even I haven't visited, and I do need travel buddies. Nothing else, just the friendship of a good person, with whom we can just walk around, talk, have good coffee with, and enjoy places. I want too much, I know. LOL. In this day and age, people get together for one thing and that one thing, to me, meh, no thanks. So yeah, I wanna have a travel friend for the travels and good moments. Haha.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis Hey, I'd be your partner in travel. I'd probably never be home except that 1: I can't afford that and 2: I'd be the only one leaving. But, like, I spent a week in Munich back when people were paying me. In fact I was being paid to be there and it was with a bunch of my coworkers. So I mean, just say when and where and let's see what happens. This... is also why I've taken to also looking for remote jobs. The more remote the job, the less the employer cares whether I work from my living room in Ottawa or a hotel room in Italy.

Ok, I'm still being stubborn. Got around to reinstalling some of the tooling and I'll see whether I can build Qt this time.
in reply to modulux

@modulux Looking at your patience while exploring a way to make accessible multiplatform apps, perhaps @TauriApps might be worth looking at. I haven't yet tried it but according to the description it is looking like a much lighter platform comparable to #electron. It is reported to use platform native webviews where possible.
in reply to Peter Vágner

I could give it a look but I really really really dislike web for things that would be better native. Something like a listview has so much better affordances in a native application than on the web. Still, I suppose I could try it. thanks for the suggestion.

At this year's #FOSDEM my team at #wolfSSL got no booth space so my large volume #curl sticker distribution (LVCSD) has to be done using other means.

The LVCSD will most likely happen in the cafeteria area, but feel free to ping me if you can't get your fix as planned.

I will bring thousands of curl stickers and hundreds of coasters. There will be a few mugs and maybe some tshirts.

Buying myself friends, like a boss.

Vale, me ha llegado un aviso de un curso del INAP muy útil para URAs (unidades rsponsables de accesibilidad) pero me lo mandan el mismo día que se cierra la inscripción.

Otra vez será.

in reply to modulux

a mí el curso ese me llegó por email el viernes pasado. No sé a qué andan, la verdad, si lleva un mes abierto. si no fuera porque no me puedo apuntar, lo haría solo por curiosear.
in reply to Iván Novegil

Hello #blind #MacOS users. Question from my partner @LaurenCeleste again. How do you create a shortcut to a website on the desktop? Every guide I can find says simply select the text in the address bar and drag it to the desktop. But how do you do this with VO? I know it has drag and drop and the gestures for that, but doesn't cmd+tab ruin any positioning, which you need to do to get the VO cursor from safari to the finder in order to drag something to the desktop? Is there some way to move the VO cursor between windows while setting up a multi-window D&D that I missed? Or an easier way to create a web shortcut (.webloc) accessibly? @FreakyFwoof @pitermach @masonasons @TheQuinbox

If you have file extension visibility enabled:

1. create a txt file that looks like the following:

[InternetShortcut]URL=example.com

2. Change the extension to .url.

There might be a better way, but this way works for me.

in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

@miki Always wondered how to make those on mac directly, those stupid .webloc things Mac uses are annoying and pointless, so I always just make the shortcut on windows and send it over the network. If this method works which I will be testing later on, wonderful. Easy enough to do it from terminal using echo and then >website.url

I've just remixed the promo trifold flyer from @libreoffice promo material from 2016. Included the new icons updated and translated it into portuguese. Where to send the .pdf and the .odg so it can be featured on the page? And so that we can spread the word among portuguese speaking friends.

A main technical and economic difference to #matrix servers/clients:
The family of #deltachat apps uses #chatmail servers as ephemeral message transports that know nothing and forget everything: Servers don't store group metadata or cryptographic identities and delete messages after download by default. In effect, a 30EUR/month #chatmail server with 10K's of active users hums along with 2% IO and CPU pressure, 1GB RAM and negligible disk usage. No Pro-version or Kubernetes needed to scale ;)

If I were sighted, I would likely have collected lots of comib books. Has anyone experimented with using AI such as Ally to read and describe comic books? This is something I'd very much like to try.

Yes I've run them through ChatGPT or Be My AI with good results. Sometimes it will miss the point but if you ask for descriptions panel by panel you can generally get 90 percent of the way there.

Wow, RIP edd potter of playback magazine fame, passed away on Jan 14.

I know that the files would be huge but I do wish that Playback and Playback Underground could be made available as zip files. Perhaps they could be divided up where each .zip file might contain several years of files?

I'm really enjoying the original "Upstairs, Downstairs" from the 1970s which is available for free on Tubi. Sadly, it's not audio described but it's a nice, (so far) calm series with very interesting and colorful characters.

This is probably already known by most fans of Star Trek and Doctor Who but I just learned that David McIntee passed away last month. I remember him at one of the Gallifrey conventions and he was quite enjoyable. I so far haven't read any of his books but I definitely plan to do so.

David A. McIntee has passed away.

As a parent of a Gen Z kid, I can tell you that their whole entire lives they’ve seen the government put them last. Guns, covid, student loans, cost-of-living, it’s always their gen that has gotten fucked.

This TikTok ban vividly reinforces what they already know.

Getting ready for my last night in this United States. Because, whatever we get after tomorrow's event, it won't be the USA that any of us, I suspect, are used to. I won't call it America, because that just casually disregards Canada, Mexico, and all of South and Central America and I get really mad when people just call this country America. I sispecpt Canadians, Mexicans, and all of Latin America probably aren't huge fans of it, either. Either way, the next little while and beyond is going to be rough. Buckle up, hold on, and resist what you can where you can!! Here we go. :(

This is a quick test.
I figured out how to braille while using my Magic Keyboard.
This is pretty neat.

Tomorrow will be a dark day for many.

For disabled, marginalized, LGBTQ+ folks & women. For anyone who still cares about others

The disability community saw this coming. It’s important we listen & understand that labelling people as expendable for 5 years leads nowhere good

Since November we’ve watched hate win over and over again.

We’ve witnessed the emboldening of those who think they’re superior to others.

We’ve seen an increase in misogyny, bigotry, ableism, racism & discrimination.

Disabled people begged the Left to pay attention. We begged you to keep masking, to push for clean air, to demand accountability from government.

We implored you to realize that our lives are not less important than your ability to go out for brunch.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of people on both sides of the aisle decided that mitigating COVID was “too hard.”

They accepted repeat infections as inevitable so they wouldn’t have to adapt their lives in any way.

They threw away people like me.

We let hate win. And now we’re going to see the consequences of that decision.

Disabled people weren’t surprised in November, we’ve been living in what feels like an alternate reality for years.

But I suspect others are about to feel our pain.

If you’re feeling scared or angry right now, know that you’re not alone. There’s a community standing with you.

I don’t know exactly what comes next, but I do know we have to keep up the fight.

Trump wanted to censor TikTok long before Biden -- and a huge majority of Congress -- stupidly made it law.

Now he's taking the credit for its (likely) restoration.

Follow the politics, yes, but also the money.
