Around this time last year, I did a rare thing for me, and wrote/produced a complete song, the first I had done in years. This stemmed from what I call a "syno sequence" that had been running around in my head rent-free since 1992, associated with the word organism.
Being a blind, autistic Synesthete, pretty much anything goes. Words can be associated with indescribable sounds, musical motifs, smells, other words, colors... Ideas and concepts can have that, too. It's very hard to explain this particular brand of synesthesia even to other Synesthetes.
Did you know, for example, that all saxophones are called Steve, but Steve itself, not any particular person, just the word Steve, is usually a pizza box? Well, now you do!
If I took all the filters off, I could write about this for days.
Anyway, in late 1992, during my third grade science class, the topic of the day was organisms, and their different classifications. As soon as my teacher said the word organism, this little four bar sequence in C miner popped into my head, and just never left.
Finally, almost 32 years later, I couldn't stand it anymore, and wrote and performed a song around that little motif. I played all the instruments on this piece, except for drums and bass, provided by @FreakyFwoof, who also helped with the mix, and tightening up my crappy rhythm guitar playing. I'm not great with stringed instruments. I'm much more comfortable with buttons and knobs.
This features acoustic guitar, melodica (actually a melodion, because Hammond-Suzuki calls it that, probably for Hohner trademark avoidance reasons), clarinet, mandolin, piano (Spitfire Labs Mrs. Mills), an emulated Casio VL-tone 1, a doorstop, a Hammond XK-2 pretending to be a B3, drums, bass, and me clapping and yelling random stuff. Except for the drums, bass, piano and organ, everything is acoustic, so about half of it, I guess.
I don't get to play music at home anymore for various depressing reasons. This was recorded in my parents' living room. I can't explain, after years of virtual musical silence, how much joy I got from making this silly thing happen. We could all use some of that right about now, so, in that spirit, I'm sharing this with the world again.

Nadal piszę dla przyjemności i frajdy, ale też są z tego wymierne korzyści.
Gdy opublikuję np. opis moich eksperymentów z LLM-ami, to myślę, że dotrę do 10-20 tysięcy odbiorców. Zdjęcie kota z kromką chleba na głowie miałby minimum jedno zero więcej.
Nad tekstem będę siedział 1-2h. Kot to gotowiec z netu ze strony z memami.

@mormegil Ještě bych doplnil, že v té zakázce nebylo jen zpracování rodokmenu a kroniky tohoto rodu, ale doplňování rodokmenu z dalších dvou linií, které už jsem měl sám rozpracované a měl jsem individuální požadavky (pomoct tam, kde jsem se sám zasekl), takže moje zakázka nebyla úplně typická. Původně jsem si říkal, jestli to tak neudělat se vším, ale ta zpracovaná kronika má opravdu přidanou hodnotu. Nejsou to jen suchá fakta, ale paní @margo to dokáže velmi pěkně zasadit do historických reálií a dějinných událostí a napsat k tomu opravdu pěkné povídání. Babička dárek ještě nedostala, ale mamka je z něj nadšená.

I trust you've heard by now that HTTP/3 is coming. It is the next destined HTTP version, targeted to get published as an RFC in July 2019. Not very far off. HTTP/3 will not be done over TCP.
@tranzystorek_io they have. The offer their own QUIC stack now using their regular API. It's just MUCH slower and resource hungry than the competition.
a small correction: you mention Quicly as a TLS library. It is not. Quicly and PicoTLS are both developed by Kazuho Ohu at Fastly. Quickly is the Quic stack. PicoTLS is the TLS library, used by Quickly and by other Quic stacks, including Picoquic.

Heh. My toot about trapping Claude is still murdering my notifications, and has taken over my previous most popular toot about a fake cookie banner, and the best part: much more engagement on it too! That's the best part. I usually have boost & fav notifications turned off, but... I'm in a sour mood lately, and the notification sound reminds me of a bot being trapped in an infinite maze of garbage, and that cheers me up a little. So they're temporarily turned on, and I get to enjoy a small dopamine hit every once in a while! Whee!
I do like the fact that my two most popular toots, like, ever, are these two: a silly fake cookie banner, and a delightful toot about trapping an AI crawler. If that's going to be my legacy, I'm happy.

Oh, I don't think that's accessible very much, nothing shrimp is accessible, to be fair. I am using enafore which also has sounds, which you have to enable from the settings page, but it has the masto sound from the actual interface of masto. Why? I have no idea, but if I could, I would change it for sure.
While it is hosted at iceshrimp, it is a slightly hacked up Mastodon web UI. Not sure how accessible that is, but it's not a shrimp UI.
But yeah, it plays the mastodon sound. I don't mind much, most of it is obscurbed by the music I'm listening to - I just hear that something happened, because there was a momentary disruption in the music.
Oh interesting. Well in that case, Enafore plays the same sound, so I get that. I still don't get phone notifications though, which sucks. I guess they've not been implemented for anyone, yet.
Oh, yeah, no notifications on the phone for me, either (using Tusky on Android). But then, I have turned them off on my phone anyway, so wouldn't know even if I had any!
I use Toot! on phone, but I used to use Tusky when I had an Android before, I liked it. There was also an app called subway tooter, and for its funny name, it was pretty useable and cute if you were a blind person with good screen orientation, which I sadly am, so it's hard for me to relate to many blind humans, like some thing in between. I haven't bought any apps, besides Toot! a long time ago and that ws super cheap one-time purchase. But there are no notifications, at all. And my backup account on another instance does receive notifications, because it's Masto with Glitch, if I am not mistaken, so those work there. It's time for GTS to implement notifications, because I don't want to respond to someone 5hours later if I can help it. :)

After nearly a full year in development, NodeBB v4.0.0 has landed, bringing federation between NodeBB instances (and a connection to the wider fediverse of social media) to forum software.

Fediverse! Here's a TechCrunch primer about it, but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. All you need to know is that NodeBB plugs in to a wider social network so that you don't have to cultivate an audience, they're already there.
The genesis
It was back in mid-2023 when I had the initial idea of interconnecting NodeBB forums. Back then, I had far smaller ambitions... I wanted a singular NodeBB to be able to communicate with other forums running NodeBB. To do that, we'd need to build out a centralized service to act as a bridge between instances, and corresponding slim clients on individual installs to consume the relayed data. At the time, concept like decentralization were not even part of my thought process.
It was during this period when I was doing my research that I stumbled on Mastodon, and later, ActivityPub, the protocol that powers it all. Since then, it's been one wild ride getting NodeBB to speak the same language.
Funding
Soon after dipping my toes into all that Mastodon had to offer, I discovered the NLNet Foundation, and their corresponding fund — NGI Zero Core. With the promise of funding, NodeBB could fully commit to implementing the protocol in short order, instead of piece by piece over time. We sent in an application and were delighted to be approved for the August 2023 call.
Their funding was instrumental in providing the financial stability to experiment with ActivityPub and to participate in developer circles, such as the SWICG, FediForum, and much more.
NodeBB v4 comes shipped with the capability to interact with other NodeBB forums and any other ActivityPub-speaking software, right out of the box. We opted to make this a core feature instead of a plugin, since there were many changes made to core to support even the concept of accepting content from outside itself.
To that end, any users upgrading from v3.x will automatically have federation disabled, in order to reduce surprise. Any new forums will federate automatically.
You can turn federation on and off (and adjust some other fun toggles) directly from ACP > Settings > Federation (ActivityPub).
Even after turning federation on, how you use it shapes how well connected you will be. There is no centralized authority artificially boosting your content, so the name of the game is establishing two-way follow relationships to other sites.
The ActivityPub Equalizer
We're not alone in this journey to interoperate with other decentralized services. We're not even the only forum software to attempt to do so.

Ghost is building out in the open.
I specifically highlight these two because they both started in the early 2010s, same as NodeBB. It's always been a bit of an informal competition between us, and we always checked in on what the others were doing (growth-wise, pricing-wise, etc.) Truth be told, I don't think the ghost team ever really noticed NodeBB, but I digress...
The funny thing about ActivityPub is that at the end of the day, the overarching goal of seamless communication breaks down any barriers between competing organizations.
NodeBB and Discourse have been vying for the exact same market share (forums, community-building, self-started or enterprise) for over 10 years, and it was only after ActivityPub came around that the dev teams even started talking to one another.
Funny how that works.

I got the $30 tape recorder. Spoiler alert: It's mono. However, the universe sometimes throws me a bone. When I was very young in the 90's, I had a tape from an a cappella group that started with a song called "Take a Holiday". I remember it quite well, have tried searching for it, and never found it. Today I pulled out a random take from a random stack in one out of two giant boxes of tapes. And I found ... Easy T's - Tape a Holiday (Shoestring Records, 1993). The internet still stubbornly refuses to agree with me that this thing exists. So Here's my proof. The tape is in less than stellar shape after 30 years and this is a recording from a shitty boombox that would probably make cassette enthusiasts cry. You have been warned.
