I just noticed that the #GNOME implementation of the global shortcuts portal was finally merged 🎉 Thanks to everyone who worked on it!

At @couchdb we take data safety extreeeeemly serious.

A few weeks ago, we had to make sure we were not susceptible to a particularly gnarly race condition that could lead to catastrophic data loss.

We were not (😮‍💨), but to make sure we had to go back to the very foundations any database is built on: basic syscalls, a filesystem, process crashes and (lying) storage devices.

Come with me on a journey of rediscovering what it means to safely store data: neighbourhood.ie/blog/2025/02/…

This is insane to me. I'm biased, though. Punctuation and spelling matter inherantly to me, but I also need them to be correct so speech can give me the best version of a message. I can also add punctuation more easily thanks to braille screen input, and can hear spelling mistakes I make more easily thanks to speech feedback. I'll continue writing the most grammatically correct posts and texts I can, even if doing so is lame.

I made a crowdsourced map for climbing stuff once. If there is a shoe shop, you can mark if they do repair climbing shoes as well: mapcomplete.org/climbing?z=13.…

Feel free to add your favourite repair shops too; it is all based (and saved into) #OpenStreetMap

Mozilla’s New Terms of Use are out of step with Firefox’s Direct Competition

Mozilla’s New Terms of Use are out of step with... #firefox

@mozillaofficial decided to add "Terms of Use" to #Firefox.

If you just asked "WTF?", welcome to the club.

Of course, this doesn't make sense, it couldn't be just like that... so I went on and read the terms. The trick is specifically on this bit:

"These Terms only apply to the Executable Code version of Firefox, not the Firefox source code."

So sure, Firefox is still the Free Software codebase you were used to, only now if you want to use not the code but Mozilla's distributed binaries, you'll do so while also agreeing to some Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

The trick is, of course, to not use their binaries. In practice, things are a bit trickier. Ubuntu, for instance, was more than happy to ditch their self-compiled Firefox packages and use Mozilla-provided snaps instead.

But trickier or not... well, Mozilla has just made an unhappy user base unhappier - and I hope they reap what they are sowing.

General rule of thumb: Every time an organization updates their terms of service and/or privacy policy, it is never because they have your best interests at heart.

Specific thoughts on this latest Mozilla action (blog.mozilla.org/en/products/f…)

Setting aside the "worldwide license" bullshit, the privacy policy appears to have broadened both the classes of data Mozilla aims to collect, and the situations in which they collect them.

These are not the actions of an org that cares about your privacy.

I just signed up with @Tutanota to start migrating some of the things I still use Gmail for and saw this on the site which is really cool:

"We welcome people from abroad to apply with Tuta. If you are currently living outside of Germany and need to relocate to Hanover in order to join our team, we will help you with everything necessary. We also have experience with the blue card visa process to support you if you relocate from outside the EU."

lool. Then there's articles like these. "Slack might be down, but remote workers are reveling in the massive outage with potential global workday freedom"
windowscentral.com/software-ap…

I'm not sure if it was workday freedom for me. I could still work in Google Workspace content, in our internal repos to create my branch and draft PR, and reply to an engineer about some questions he had on implementing a fix. All in all, not a day of freedom, but maybe one of lessened productivity ever so slightly.

Toma como base las capas de #openstreetmap y te permite añadir diferentes capas geográficas.
