Microsoft claims that 30% of the code is already generated by AI. Why isn't it 100%. So I tried it. I "created" an application whose code is 100% generated by AI. I didn't write a single line of code. The goal was not to create some large or complex application. Simply just a test. I chose a programming language in which I had never done anything. The entire code is the result of AI. 👍 Not only the code, but also any text changes were made by AI based on input requirements. I always wanted the entire file as the result, not just the part that changed.
What about my impressions? At the beginning it was very good. As the project gained in complexity, the problems grew. AI changed parts of the code that it should have kept or discarded them completely. I often had to point out completely obvious but essential precautions, etc. This means that some experience in application development or design was needed to fully develop this way.

I love #joplin so much. I find myself using it to publish long documents that I want others to read that are well formatted, but in plain HTML so can't be edited, and live on my server. Better than a PDF by far, and markdown makes including tables and other complicated layout easy. The only improvement I'd love is the ability to see how many visits a published note got. I don't need browser and IP and location and all that stuff. Just a number, so I can know if a link I shared with a single person was viewed by them.
Right now, I'm using #shlink to generate a unique URL for this purpose. So I publish a #joplin note, then put that URL into shlink, and give my person the shlink url. Then I can see if they clicked it or not. In theory, Joplin allows plugins and I could automate this workflow somehow but I have no idea how Joplin plugins actually work.
I've tried Obsidian, Silverbullet and Trilium Next, all of which had very significant accessibility issues I discovered within the first minute that made them not viable.

Guy runs a hosting startup, so I'm not surprised. This sort of 'advice' has been going around in startup circles for a very, very long time, unfortunately...
The people giving this advice also invariably have extremely limited (and often no) experience with self-hosting things, and systematically overestimate the difficulty of Linux administration tasks, and *underestimate* the difficulty of interacting with SaaS/PaaS APIs and dashboards.
It's like the people arguing "AWS makes hosting so much simpler than running your own servers" and then hiring specialized "AWS engineers", ie. sysadmins who can only work with vendor-specific systems...
Email is critical infrastructure in today's digitalized world. Relying on foreign hosting is not a good idea for anybody at risk of political interference because of their profession. Hosting email locally is still very much possible, even if it gets more involved year over year. Email is the one federated protocol that we have for direct communication. Even with all of its deficiencies in security and privacy, it is the common denominator that connects people. Don't give up control over your own, most basic digital communication channel. Use local hosting companies that you can still call in an emergency, ideally within your own (maybe extended, like EU level) jurisdiction.
Update: As pointed out by @ilumium, depending on your threat model, using an explicitly foreign email service provider can be beneficial if your *local* government is the main threat actor. However, if the local government can physically get you or your client devices, then don't assume too much protection through the email service.

I've been using Brave Talk as an alternative to Zoom for video call meetings.
My biggest concern is getting folks who are familiar with Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet to use and adapt to other platforms like Brave Talk.
I'm curious to hear how other people have dealt with this. In my experience, people oftentimes seem hesitant and reluctant to try new apps b/c they're comfortable with what they already know.
With that said, I'm going to try using Jitsi and Calyx for future video calls
As usual you forget Infomaniak. Swiss bases they have a whole office suite including software for calls. They have great customer service and prices are low.

Vypadá to, že to umře stejně jako technické knihy. Před 20 lety jsem studoval bifle jako Dokumentační projekt, pak to nahradily věci jako SO. Akorát tedy nevím, z čeho se to AI bude učit, když lidi přestanou vytvářet obsah, protože aby se to učilo nějak samo, k tomu to má ještě hodně daleko.
Tak oni si lidi tyhle věci píšou, jenom je to jinde (různá řešení jsou např. v GitHub Issues), nebo to není veřejně (Discord). Pokud někdo bude potřebovat novější data a SO umře, tak holt nakoupí data z top programátorských Discordů a jede se dál. Ve výsledku mi pak výsledné LLM poradí rychleji a lépe, než kdybych to na těch Discordech hledal sám.
@sesivany To je odvážná hypotéza :) V těch issues a Discordech je IMO velká hromada bordelu a na rozdíl od Stack Overflow u nich absentují jasně čitelné signály o kvalitě odpovědí. Jsem hodně zvědav, jestli tyhle „špinavé“ zdroje budou stačit. Stack Overflow ostatně kdysi uspělo právě díky tomu, že člověk věděl, že se nebude muset prodírat hromadou bordelu a rychle dojde ke správné (-ish) odpovědi.
@zoul @sesivany Můžeš použít existující LLM na to, aby pochopil ty konverzace a ten bordel trochu vyčistil. Chvíli se budeme nacházet ve zvláštním mezistavu, ale podle mě se tyhle věci pak zajedou a budeme schopni jednak dostávat data z míst, odkud to předtím vůbec nešlo, jednak je čistit způsoby, kterými to předtím nikdy nešlo.
Laškuju s myšlenkou, že LLM jsou asi něčím, co lidstvo už dlouho potřebovalo, aby se vyznalo v kvantech bordela. Dřív to byl search typu Google, ale to dnes už nestačí.
@zoul mě na tom mrzí jen to, že to povede k uzavírání znalostí. LLM naučené jen na otevřených zdrojích budou vždycky horší než LLM, které se naučí na těch otevřených a ještě na uzavřených. Správci těch zdrojů budou motivovaní to uzavírat, protože to budou moct lépe zpeněžit. Že se podpora různých projektů přesouvá na Discord popravdě považuji za velmi špatný trend. Tady doufám v nějaké soudní rozhodnutí, že trénování LLM není fair use a vznikne nějaká viralita u toho obsahu. Ale to AI lobby je tam obrovské, že jsem k tomu skeptický.

This is the kind of thing I deal with at work in the corporate world almost daily. Some group wants something to be a certain way, and they convince upper management to create a company wide rule for them that forces everyone to comply. Then later they realize their silly rule causes them trouble, and they show up at my door asking me personally to violate the company policy that they got implemented. I ignore them vigorously. It is funny to see this same thing play out in the wild.
