Hackers have reportedly destroyed the entire IT infrastructure of Russia’s Aeroflot in a year-long cyber operation. All critical systems—from databases to internal mail and executive communications—were breached. Around 7,000 servers were wiped and over 20TB of data stolen. Damages are estimated in the tens of millions of dollars. The attackers call it a "strategic strike" on the company’s and state’s digital security.

Konečně něco pořádnýho. 👍

And this is why I stopped contributing to #MapyCom (and pretty much all proprietary platforms) and started contributing to #OpenStreetMap and #WikimediaCommons last year.

in reply to adison verlice

@adisonverlice There's a report of all the accidents that have ever happened to a Waymo. In the US, those are tracked and regulated pretty tightly. Most of the stories rhymed with "the car was in a parking lot, there was a thunderstorm, the car got hit by a tree, nobody was inside, but the vehicle had to be scrapped." At the time of the report, which was a few years after these cars were first deployed, there were two "real" accidents, both clearly the fault of the other party as documented on CCTV. Those are very clearly safer than humans, there's no question about it at this point. Not perfectly safe, and that's a distinction that escapes a lot of people, but much safer.

You're right about the lack of accountability, and that is exactly the problem. It's the question of what do we want as a society. A safer car, but one where there's no sense of closure when an accident happens, or a car that kills a lot more people, but when your family member dies in an accident, you can watch the guilty party rot in prison.

in reply to miki

@miki You know I do have a way we can actually do something about it. Obviously the human is not going to have any closure. But what if we did something like this. We have AI so you can't tell me that we can't do something like this. Let's say there's about to be an accident and they're going somewhere the car will stop and back away and alert the person that there is a car that that's about to have an axis. Or that there's an accident. And then the car will try to take an alternate route. It could be longer but we're not worried about how long the route is in this situation. We have patience we can handle it. We're worried about not getting into an accident. Or if it can't do that it will try to back away to the safest possible area. And if it can't do that it will TRY to activate the airbags or get them ready before that car gets hit.

Yesterday, I read on this platform about a program called Omni Describer.
It is designed to take a local video, a direct URL of a video, or a YouTube video and provide audio description.
The audio description can be played alongside the native audio track, it can be downloaded to MP3 and even have audio ducking applied if necessary.
Not only are the descriptions in sync with the main audio track, but they can be refined to your taste.
Features provide the ability to focus in on individual scenes and get an overview of what is happening, or perhaps ask questions about specific elements of the scene.

The documentation is easy to follow and clearly explained, and the accessibility of the program is absolutely top notch. So much thought has gone into the design of this, it is unreal.
It is one of those apps which, like JAWS Picture Smart, could make a real difference.

The issue we have however is Google sensorship.
In order for the description to be generated, you need a Google API key, which is easy to come by.
The issue however seems to be that Google is most particular about the content which should be described. When the program works, it works exceptionally well. The problem is that with a lot of videos, which are completely harmless, it does not.
We do get this situation sometimes with images which the AI deems as being unsuitable for us and so will not divulge the content. We seem to have this here in a more agressive form.

I've tried plenty of videos now. A number of them are fine. But put something in front of it which could even be considered slightly suggestive, it says "No, not doing that".
Examples would be extracts from BBC shows broadcast at prime time in the 1970's through to a video of a child's birthday party.
These videos do not controvene YouTube's guidelines or terms of service and have been available for many years. If they did, you could understand what was happening. There is a feature within the program which, as far as possible, disregards apparent safety precautions, but it does not seem to make a huge difference. Essentially, I am being told what I should be watching.

To reiterate, I'm absolutely certain the developer of this program is not at fault and I hope there is a solution some way down the road. He deserves credit for magnificent application development. But until we come out of this nonsense of the "nanny State", it looks a little bleak.

I would encourage anyone to use it though if you can:

If you're keen to try the beta, but aren't sure how, download & run it just like any other copy of NVDA!

You can install it, but we recommend most users create a portable copy. Tips here: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-9…

Particularly test any highlighted features or those mentioned in the change log.

GitHub is the best place to report issues - steps here: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-1…

Or ask here or via email!

for the little story, getting to that GUADEC is the only time I missed a flight.

[1]And it was not my fault. It was the moron at the SNCF that sold me a TGV fare with compulsory reservation on a train they had cancelled.

And let me tell you which customer service was more customer oriented. Hint. It was the SNCF (railroad) it was Air France. They rebooked me without fee. They knew the SNCF was shittier.

It was in 2003.

[1] The 2017 return from Cologne doesn't count. Swiss Air is still shit.

On the off chance anyone is familiar with MikroTik, I have a question. I'm between the RB5009 and the L009. The latter is much cheaper and less powerful, but should still do what I need. I think. 1GBPS is enough for me, and the most intensive things I plan to do are Wireguard for several clients and two or three VLANs. I like the price of the L009, but I don't want to get something now I'll only have to upgrade in a year. I don't know if the RB5009 is worth it, or is massively overpowered.
in reply to Jamie Teh

@Jamie Teh @Kyle Borah @Alex Hall I have used mikrotik devices a lot in my previous job. The company I've worked for had like hundreds of them in production. I've always used SSH and CLI interface to control them. For the home setup I'd recommend going with lower specs mikrotik. Wireguard VPN is not so CPU intensive as compared to other VPNs and tunnels.
The security issues mostly come from the fact router OS allows you to do all ssorts of veird configs like disabling firewall filter rules completelly, or not blocking incoming DNS, NTP traffic whatever.
I would say it's a good think so inside your network you can have all these in place and you should secure mostly edge routers.

in reply to Debian

Original description ( peertube.debian.social/w/9J5zi… )

"Parody of a popular clip from the American-Malayalee television series 'Akkarakazhchakal' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akkara_K…) advertising Debian.

Those unaware, watch the the original clip from the series here: youtu.be/GzeAQlSxVvc. In the series, an expat from Kerala, India creates this ad for his insurance company named "Thekkumoottil insurance".

Made by folks of Debian India who has laughed enough to the original Akkarakazhchakal clip. A fun fact that somebody told me (subin): People used to torrent this 2008 show, it's arguably the first Malayalee tv show that was shared via torrent. Even after 15 years since its end, the show is adored by Malayalees"
