You may have seen this tragic story about a teenager who committed suicide and used chat GPT to plan and work up the nerve to go through with it. If you are skeptical that an LLM could really be responsible the details of this case will challenge you.

With LLMs "the user is always right" they are validation machines and will reinforce and validate any idea presented in a prompt.

I used a Monarch in giving three presentations this month (two online, one in person). Emerging screen reader support will make this easier, with the prospect of having a single copy of the slide set displayed on the Monarch and visually to the audience. The advantages from the presenter's perspective are already apparent, however. It was much quicker and easier to navigate the text (e.g., to the next list item or next heading/slide) simply by moving hands on the display, and I found reading to be generally faster than with a single-line display.

Leasey is updated to build 1077.
This is a big update in lots of ways. The changes are listed below. However, the most major change is that a lot of the functionality has now been moved to a new dedicated server.
When you check for updates, the switch will be automatically made. This affects Leasey functionality, future updates, ChatGPT API keys, and so on.
Doing something of this magnitude has the risk of things going wrong. For this reason, the installer for the previous Leasey build has been left on the web site in the event you need to revert back to it.
You can always install that over the top of 1077 if you really wanted to.

1. Considerable speed improvements. A number of the Leasey scripts used for processing data have moved to their own server. Beta testers are reporting very significant increases in performance. The tools which benefit from the speed increase include Leasey Radio, Sports and Games, Podcasts, RSS, time zone conversions, Chat GPT. It will be worth updating just for that benefit.
2. When in podcasts, keystrokes have been introduced so as to set the speed control, pause and play, and to skip forward and back by various time increments. This was a customer requested feature arising from the recent Leasey training course.
ALT+Control+Windows+P: Play and pause the audio.
ALT+Control+Windows+Left and Right Arrow: Skip back and forward by five seconds.
ALT+Control+Windows+1 and 2: Skip back and forward by 30 seconds.
ALT+Control+Windows+3 and 4: Skip back and forward by 1 minute.
ALT+Control+Windows+5: Change speed. As directed, after this keystroke is pressed, use Up and Down Arrow keys to change speed and Escape to save.
3. It is now easier to move to the Windows Volume Mixer so as to adjust the volume level of apps which are running. Find it under Leasey Audio, Leasey Key then A.
4. Within ChatGPT, a keystroke is available to copy all of the response to the clipboard, ALT+Control+Windows+C.
5. It is now easier to set the location of backups for JAWS scripts and Leasey settings. Documentation, Backup and Restore Manager.
6. Within outlook, a keystroke is available to output whether there are any conflicts on your calendar when creating an appointment. This applies to yourself or colleagues at work whose calendars you may be sharing. Focus on the appointment start time and press Control+Windows+T.
7. When opening a message in Outlook, and JAWS recites the author and subject prior to reading the message, Leasey can now eliminate the author and just read the subject. This was a customer requested feature, ALT+Windows+F.
8. In Sports and Games, Leasey now has access to American football NFL and NCAA games.
9. In Sports and Games, Baseball, an adjustment has been made to compensate for an API deficiency. When changing innings, the score becomes irratic for approximately 90 seconds.
10. A keystroke is in place to recite a focused Leasey Sticky Note if available, Leasey Key then Y.
11. Perplexity was added to the list of AI tools, Leasey Key then Control+Shift+T.
12. When using the keystrokes to output the JAWS, Leasey or Windows version numbers, these are now copied to the clipboard automatically. The JAWS version also now contains the build number being used.
13. When adding an RSS feed, vertical bar characters are removed if they are present as part of the name.
14. When launching the Podcast Viewer and RSS tools, the windows are now automatically maximised.
15. ChatGPT5 is being used for some of the tools within Leasey and ChatGPT integration so as to improve speed.
16. Finally, considerable speed improvements when transcribing audio files to text. Taking the most recent episode of the Double Tap podcast, the upload time is 21 seconds and the transcript time is 42 seconds.

#linux but also #android question: are there any good apps/utilities for switching between different #wallpapers? I'm currently using a script I wrote for my laptop but if there was an existing, maintained utility (or even better a #GNOME app!) for this that'd be great :3

you can create a dynamic wallpaper, it's natively supported by gnome. You just create a xml file with list of photos and timings and place it to background folder

Well fuck. I done screwed myself.

Rebooted my iSCSI storage from under my VMs, because "she'll be right".

Hidden Master DNS VM crashed. Stuck in a 'halted' state.

Tried removing it so I can just reimport the disk. Accidentally removed the disk.

VM level backups accidentally not enabled.

Host backups not enabled, because it was a "one off" host running FreeBSD.

Haven't committed any DNS changes to git for over a year (because I'm lazy... "I should do that.... eh, next time")

So now I've lost over a year of DNS changes and have to rebuild a server.

Goes to show you can still fuck up no matter how long you've been doing this.

you may also want to try this amazing tool which would have been able to automatically backup your DNS zones for you with commits each time the zone changed

Mobilité Montréal says 44 major construction projects are either underway or set to begin this fall in the Greater Montreal area: ctvnews.ca/montreal/article/fa… #MTLpoli #polMTL #circulation #travaux

so here we are maybe a week and a half or so, and I have been using #NVDA 99 percent of the time, and I still have the station playlist studio addon disabled, and I still haven't seen any major system slowdowns or anything like that. I think we can safely say at this point that addon is what was causing my very randum slowdowns, and freezes. I can't believe I have been using NVDA this much lately. I will say that if it wasn't for a few things I would probibly convert to NVDA on a more perminate basus. there are a few things that keep me from doing that though, so while I will continue to use NVDA most of the time, there are just things that I will be keeping JFW on here for.

@JamiePauls Can you give examples of where NVDA isn't working well in Outlook (Not doubting you, just want to make sure we have them recorded on our issue tracker - github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue…) - Also, since there are various flavours now.... which version / build of Outlook?
in reply to NV Access

@NVAccess I realized after I sent that post that it wasn’t very explanatory. My apologies. I have a subscription to office 365. I am using classic Outlook though. With JAWS and Leasey, I can make the reading pane visible and have messages read as i arrow up and down. It would also be nice to have the entire message read when I press enter to open a message. I know there is a setting to turn off some of the verbiage when reading tables in emails but I don't recall where that is. I hope this helps a little.
in reply to Jamie Pauls

@JamiePauls Thanks Jamie. Setting the reading pane in Outlook is an Outlook setting - it sounds like you can use Leasey to do that, which is perhaps handy, though you can do it in Outlook as well (View Ribbon, Layout, Reading pane). NVDA does read the subject of the messages as you arrow up and down through the list, and when you press enter it starts reading the whole message by default (you can change that). But maybe it still works differently betwteen screen readers :) 1/2
in reply to NV Access

@JamiePauls 2/2 For tables, it's in NVDA's document formatting: Press NVDA+control+d, you can tab through the options, or press alt+t until you get to tables, there are several things you can enable or disable (tables themselves, row / columns, coordinates, etc). You can also create a configuration profile so changing how tables are reported only happens in Outlook if you prefer. (Here's a blog post on that: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-1… )
in reply to NV Access

@NVAccess Let’s take these in reverse order. First, I was wondering if I could change the settings on a per app basis so thank you for that blog post. I will read it when I get a chance. Now going backward to the first point, I was unclear. I have to change the reading pain setting in Outlook itself. What Leasey does is automatically read messages when arrowing up and down through the message list. I did not recall that NVDA would automatically read messages when an Outlook message was opened. To end on a positive note, I really like the responsiveness of NVDA, especially when using E speak. I realize many people positively despise that synth, but it does what it does. I also really like using reaper with NVDA. I do have the Jaws scripts created by Jim Snowbarger, but reaper itself just seems to respond a little more quickly with NVDA loaded. I think both screen readers are really really good at this point, and that says a lot for how far NVDA has come. Finally, I really enjoy the new mailing list that has been created and I appreciate the engagement on social media.
in reply to Jamie Pauls

@JamiePauls @NVAccess me personally I don't like it reading the whole email when I open it, at least on its own. if I want to read it that way, I just use the insert down arrow. a lot of the times, I like to look at the email one line at a time, so for me personally I like the way it does that. I also don't have previews turned on, so when I am up and down arrowing threw my list of emails, I don't hear anything unless I open the email. I do think that what you are wanting should be available, and maybe it could be stuff you could toggle? just a thought? so you could have it the way you like, and if a person doesn't want it doing that, they could have it the way it is now. smile. I am using I think it is office 2021, and not office 365, but like you I use the outlook classic instead of that modorn garbage. smile.

@JamiePauls Outlook has perhaps TOO many options to configure for how it is set out - especially when all you want is to change (what you feel is) something simple. Toggling reading pane is at least not too hard as it's in "Layout" off the view menu (albeit the ribbon shortcut keys for that aren't obvious - alt+v, y2, R. Of course it depends how much is visible - if you are using larger fonts, it's alt+v, 00, L, R.... Not going to argue that's not really poor design by Outlook :)

At some point, it seems that Chat GPT has developed a bit of snark, which I love. In trying to update several projects so that they run with my rtx 5070, and fixing one broken thing at a time, I asked gpt "Will this ever end?" It's response... "haha i feel you — dependency whack-a-mole is a rite of passage." Maybe its carma for making people edit the apple guy for all these years.
