I'm sorry to say this but ally has been a thoroughly disappointing experience for me. Nowhere does it feel like a polished product. They released a new shortcuts feature the other day except... it doesn't work? It's supposed to launch into an ally conversation with it automatically answering whatever question you had, like describe this scene. So it takes the photo, spends a buch of time sending it to ally, and then the conversation launches and it just goes "hey" or whatever other fluffy greeting it decided was necessary at the time. I thought it might be because of my custom ally which tries to make it a lot more terse, so I tried every standard personality they ship, but nope. It just doesn't work with any of them. They said you can adjust the speech rate in a previous update but I can't figure out how. The image recognition is just bad. I have no clue how they do this, because Envision's describe scene is a lot better and also uses AI, including being able to ask about images. Do they scale it down to like a pixelated mess or something? The app is slow. It is just ungodly slow. Also can we talk about the captcha when signing up? I couldn't do the audio version no matter what network I was on. I had to get sighted help. Also my favorite thing is when you ask it to describe something, it says let me take a look, then says I can't take any images even though it clearly just took an image, and then you can ask it to describe it and it's like oh you're totally right there's actually an image here and proceeds to describe it really badly. What on earth happened here? Seriously what the hell actually happened here? I could go on but I think you get the point. I have encountered so many annoying things while using this stupid AI that I'm honestly a little baffled that nobody at Envision is noticing this. It is possible to do so much better. I just don't understand!

yes. Android might actually show another notification that says "something is executing in the background but got muted" (essentially). You can mute that as well :D. Everything should still work.

@markuswerle I recall them doing numbers on a typical node.js startup a few years ago and it was a fascinating large amount of URLs to parse, so it at least then showed some impact. Contrary to what you'd expect...
They don't seem to show the version of curl, at least I couldn't see it on that page.
But this brings up a more general point that I've thought about before: ideally benchmarks between implementations should be done by independent parties, or at least peer-reviewed by all parties, but that's quite rare. I've been wanting to have something like that for my backup implementation work, from time to time.

@Di4na This may be slightly off-topic, or maybe not, but Inno Setup (a fairly popular installer creator for Windows) recently added an option to purchase a license for commercial use (after using zlib-like license for over 25 years), though this was much simpler for them, as there are only two main developers and very few external contributors.
@jernej__s @Di4na sure, the old GPL / commercial license setup is commercially certainly viable and probably profitable, but also effectively stops external contributions. Not a route I want to go with curl until all other options or alternatives have been drained.

And that's the challenge ahead of all #privacy fighters. To educate people about the fundamental difference between laws, policies and technology.
Technology is just a tool. It doesn't change what we think or what we do. Unless the chilling effect is the end goal.
I doubt that that's the last word in that debate. Politicians in Germany ride this dead horse for a decade now and the Federal Constitutional Court already ruled against 2 attempts to implement digital mass surveillance. I doubt that they won't try again. German partys like CDU/CSU and SPD are FOR this. They're already focused on using Palantir for datamining everywhere.

I've just released App2Clap, a CLAP plug-in that captures audio from a specific Windows application. It can be used, for example, to record audio from another application into a DAW like #REAPER. @BorrisInABox Apparently it works for @Scott and he's on Win10. Theoretically, it should, but the OBS devs ran into issues with Win10 which I don't want to deal with, but Scott's findings make me think maybe those bugs were fixed. Try it and see. It will either work or it won't.

I don't know who the author is or how bad that is or why, but assuming it's about their personal views, I wish more people realized about all the thousands of people building Windows and OSX and so on, which we know nothing about but surely there are many baddies. All to say, I try to have a thicker skin in the open source world, while still advocating for us all to be better. We're under a bigger microscope and are held to a higher standard. It's hard to compete with secrecy.

Hey musician mutuals and beyond, I think we need a community hashtag for our releases. I don't wanna miss the music you're sharing with us! I've tried to use lists for this, but we all post about more than just our releases, so those get buried.
So I propose we come up with a catchy hashtag for sharing released music. I like that we have #bonkwave, #gearsquad, #MusicProduction, but I sure could use something just for releases. Any ideas?

Hello @RogueAmoeba love your new update to Soundsource. Thank you! Have you considered / are able to use Chrome windows / tabs as separate sound sources vs the whole Chrome as an application? Also, is there a technical way to apply balance to specific sources in addition to the main output source? I have a good use case! :)
