1. Die Info ist nicht neu, die Schließung ist seit August bekannt, die Professur seit Oktober nicht mehr finanziert. Beispielsweise berichtete die taz: taz.de/Sparpolitik-in-Hamburg/… Warum das Thema kein größerer Aufschrei war? Sind wir ehrlich: Weil es niemanden juckt. Ja es juckt dich, es juckt mich, aber politisch, gesamtgesellschaftlich, wissenschaftlich? Das Einstampfen von Critical Studies wie den Disability Studies passt in den Zeitgeist des aufstrebenden Faschismus. Vielmehr noch: Critical Studies werden schon immer unter dem angeblichen Verdacht der Pseudowissenschaft "kritisiert". Warum? Weil sie bestehende Wissenssysteme in Frage stellen. Weil sie grundlegendere Fragen stellen und die Universalität von Wissen in Frage stellen. Weil sie Fragen wie: "Wer spricht, wer forscht, wer veröffentlicht, wer wird gehört" in den Fokus rücken. Critical Studies sind und waren immer auch ein Kampf darum, welche Fragen gestellt werden dürfen, welche Fragen wissenschaftlich ernst genommen werden, welche Personen ernst genommen werden, welches WISSEN zählt. Das Einstampfen von Critical Studies ist nicht nur epistemische Gewalt, sondern eine Niederlage für aktivistische, emanzipatorische Kämpfe - das ist fatal.
2. Der Hamburger Senat schützt sich selbst damit, dass sie ja weiter ganz doll tolle Inklusion machen, sie ja das super Projekt der Bildungsfachkräfte nach dem Vorbild der CAU Kiel etabliert hätten. Direkt vorweg: Das Projekt an sich ist nicht das allerschlechteste, darum geht es auch nicht. Es geht vielmehr darum, dass dieses Projekt dafür genutzt wird, die ausbleibende Weiterfinanzierung der Disability Studies zu rechtfertigen. In dem Projekt werden 8(!!!!) Personen mit "intellektuellen Beeinträchtigungen" qualifiziert, die bisher in WfbM arbeiteten ODER den Anspruch gehabt hätten.

I don't know much about that company, but the Basic Braille sure looks nice. A display with no keyboard, no notetaker applications, no nothing. Just a small line of braille. The site doesn't list the price, but I doubt their claim of "affordable".
@alexhall I had the chance of seeing one in person, and it is a really, really, really good display. I especially like the smart dock. I've maintained over the years that with smart phones, the day of a dedicated braille note taker are pretty much over. Honestly, I should have requested this model when I started working in virginia.
@ysotomayor @alexhall And especially now that all Braille notetakers were basically sherlocked by Apple's Braille Access feature in the 26 versions. But Help Tech have combined the local notetaking very cleverly with their all-new iOS app to ease file transfer and such. Reading a BRF or BRL file on the device is still nicer than in any app on the iPhone that constantly flips pages.
I tried an Actalino. I loved the size, but the automatic panning wasn't consistant. Now though I kinda wish I'd gotten it instead of the Focus 14, lol.
@pixelate I own an Actilino, too, and the general rule of thumb with the Active Tactile Control in these displays is that you have to play around with the ATC sensitivity and the dot firmness, but it is definitely possible to tailor it to one's Braille reading habits. Took me a few tries to get my settings just right, too. But since then, absolutely loving it.
@pixelate Around six years. I got mine shortly after the refresh 2019 when they built in an USB-C port instead of the earlier magnetic proprietary one.
@pixelate Sorry to say that, but I'm not at all surprised. I owned a Focus 40 5th generation a few years back, and had to send it in for repair three times during the two year warranty period common in the EU. The only Braille display I ever had to do that with. Even the more plasticky fourth generation lasted longer, even though it was the noisy one.
My darn space bar broke. Like it is stuck in the down position. And I sure ain't about to spend money just for it to break not too long later. Thank goodness for the NLS EReaders.
@pixelate Are those the ones based on the HumanWare Brailliant BI 20 X? Or are these different beasts? The HumanWare displays have a nice crisp feel to the Braille, but the rest feels rather cheap to me, and the keyboard of the BI 20 X fell over easily when I put it through its paces. It often lost dots while brailling quickly, and the keys felt rather wobbly over-all.
Yeah, it's based on the Brailliants. Same hardware. Except my case broke when I was trying to put it back into the case after it got wet, so now it's quite volnerable. But it still holds up, surprisingly.
@vol4life8657 Aren't they? I love that you have a choice of QUERTY or Braille, and can flip from one to the other in an instant. Also great for Braille learning. Thinking of others, not me, since I learned Braille as a kid and never un-learned it, consistent use throughout my life.
My one knock, is that the braille cdommands are a little odd to me, and you can't do things like Insert+f7 in braille that I have found out. Second, while you have an insert key, it's difficult to tell if you should use the desktop layout, or laptop layout for your screen reader. I can do most things on the qwerty keyboard though, but the atc fature is just gold!
@vol4life8657 The first thing I did whenever I installed JAWS or NVDA was to switch to the laptop layout and use the Caps lock key in addition to the Insert key. So no matter what keyboard I have in front of me, I can use Caps Lock as the NVDA or JAWS keys. I no longer use Windows nowadays, but the principle is the same for VoiceOver on the Mac. Or iOS for that matter.
Aaaand it has been shipped. Will arrive either tomorrow or on Friday. But I won't be able to unpack it until Monday evening, because I will travel to my sister's place tomorrow and will spend a long weekend with her.

So, bin auch hier wieder mit der Tweesecake-App am Start; neuer PC mit ganz erstaunlicher Schwuppdizität (32 GB RAM statt 8 GB, 2 TB SSD statt 250 GB usw.). Er fühlt sich fast lüfterlos an (dreht nur ab und zu bei größerer Last kurz auf), während mein Nuc 8 stets vor sich hin gepustet hat (seit Windows 11, also seit Mai '22). Kurzum: macht Spaß!

@svenja Hehe das war ja auch am Ende Baums Problem, die Zeilen sind so unkaputtbar, dass die Leute ewig keine neuen kaufen oder beantragen mussten. Und danke, den Spaß mit der Zeile werde ich definitiv haben.
Nein, Baums Problem waren abgesprungene Großkunden. Muss aber ehrlich sagen, falls die Zeilen irgendwann nicht mehr gehen, keine Ahnung, was ich dann nehmen soll.
@svenja Ich hab' jetzt ja schon einiges an Zeilen ausprobiert. Papenmeier sind laut und unpraktisch, BrailleSense sind ergonomisch merkwürdig, HumanWare haben zwar ein schönes Schriftbild, sind ansonsten aber Plastik-Gelumpe, und die Focus hab' ich immer als unzuverlässig empfunden (3x einschicken während der Garantiezeit). Ich komme immer wieder zu den Help Tech Zeilen zurück.
Humanware wirds bei mir definitiv werden, da mir deren Features am meisten zusagen. Allein schon, dass ich EPUB ohne Konvertierung direkt aufm Gerät lesen kann! @svenja
@svenja Ich nutze auf Arbeit Papenmeier und zu Hause eine Alpha und eine kleine Humanware. Ich komme mit allen gut klar. An der Humanware schätze ich die Möglichkeit der Kurzschrifteingabe sehr.
@Brailly615 @svenja Ich auch. Mac und iOS haben ja auch seit geraumer Zeit RTFC drin, da kann man auch Kurzschrift eingeben. Alva-Zeilen hatte ich überhaupt nicht mehr auf dem Schirm, die mochte ich auch nie, waren mir die Tasten immer zu wabbelig.
@Brailly615 @svenja Ich habe eine Focus 14 privat, die ehrlicherweise seit ewig im Schrank liegt, eine Mantis, die ich auf der Arbeit nutze und nach wenigen Tagen einzelne Tastenkombinationen einfach nicht mehr verarbeitet und eine Brailliant 80, die viel zu groß ist, um sie noch halbwegs ergonomisch zu nutzen. Alle haben etwas für sich. Und doch fühlen sie sich mit Ausnahme der 80er echt billig an. Und wirklich gerne nutze ich keine von ihnen. Aber das mag ein Problem auf meiner Seite sein.
@WestphalDenn @Brailly615 @svenja Das kann ich gut verstehen! Ähnliche Probleme habe ich auch mit der Mantis festgestellt. Die Help Tech Zeilen sind die einzigen, zu denen ich wirklich gern zurückkehre.
@Brailly615 @svenja Die hatte ich noch nicht unter den Fingern. Was ich aber feststelle ist, dass der Service von Anbietern erstaunlich oft wahnsinnig schlecht ist. Das ist aber vielleicht noch mal ein ganz anderes Thema für sich. Ich bin jedenfalls gespannt auf deine Eindrücke!
@WestphalDenn @Brailly615 @svenja Ich muss dazu sagen, dass dies bei weitem nicht die erste Zeile von Help Tech ist, die ich habe. Ich hatte schon diverse Zeilen von ihnen aus verschiedenen Generationen aus den letzten 30 Jahren.
@Brailly615 Papenmeier find ich furchtbar, nicht nur, dass sie laut sind, ich bin damals auch nur auf unfreundliche Mitarbeitende gestoßen. Sonst kenn ich auch nur Helptechzeilen bisher. @marcozehe

@svenja @Brailly615 Ich habe mich auch immer um meine eigenen Hilfsmittel gekümmert. Die Kolleg*innen in den USA wussten eh nicht, wie die Beschaffung in Deutschland läuft. Und wann wer für mich zuständig war, ob Integrationsamt zu Zeiten meiner kurzen Selbstständigkeit, Arbeitsagentur oder später Rentenversicherung, weil ich mehr als 15 Jahre voll hatte. Und was ich brauchte, wusste ich eh immer am besten.
@svenja Ich bei bin bei einem großen Arbeitgeber, bei dem viele blinde Menschen beschäftigt sind. Wir haben alle die gleichen Zeilen und den gleichen Screenreader und es gibt eine Abteilung, die sich mit der Barrierefreiheit der Programme bei uns befasst.
@trison Danke Dir, die werde ich haben. Ich finde die Verarbeitung toll, und auch das Konzept der umklappbaren Tastatur, und dass ich die Wahl habe zwischen QWERTZ und Braille. Aber ich bin eh ein Fan der Help-Tech-Zeilen, schon immer gewesen. Was mich nicht überzeugt hat, war der Activator Pro bzw. die damit verbaute Tastatur. Zum einen ist mir die Zeile eh zu wuchtig, und zum anderen hat die Tastatur einen riesigen Hub und ein sehr weiches wabbeliges Feeling. Das können die besser.
Uuuuuund sie ist verschickt. Wird vermutlich morgen oder Freitag hier ankommen. Ich werde sie aber erst am Montagabend auspacken können, weil ich morgen für ein verlängertes Wochenende zu meiner Schwester nach Wien fahre. Aber dann ist die Vorfreude noch größer.

StationPlaylist scripts 6.2 build 2 is available via check for updates. When the update is complete, you should restart JAWS with Insert+Space followed by F4. This did not used to be necessary but now it is. This is a small update with a more significant build 3 being worked on now. Changes. The keystroke to copy various track information to the clipboard, ALT+Control+Windows+C, should now be improved. If category is enabled with SPL Key then Y, JAWS should now speak categories in lists. Pressing ALT+Windows+F12 was stating the wrong time for when the track should start in a live broadcast.

You can't do this with a RAIDZ though. But you can now *grow* a RAIDZ
