We are very proud to be sponsoring #LAS2023 in #Brno this weekend!
Jason @killyourfm will be in attendance with a LOT of #Thunderbird stickers and T-shirts to give away to our #Linux family.
Look for him at the venue all weekend, and at tonight's welcome party -- he'll be wearing a black Thunderbird shirt with a white logo that looks like this:
So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.
Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"
Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.
From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."
It's enshitification in action.

The official Mastodon app is doing something new which is potentially very dangerous to the existence of Mastodon and the Fediverse.
The official Mastodon app now prompts users to join mastodon.social by default, when previously it prompted them to pick a server. If you're new this may sound harmless, but let me explain.
The entire point of this place is to be a social network spread out on as many servers as possible (the reasons are here: fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse…).

Pull vs push: intentional notifications
secluded.site/pull-vs-push-int…
I’ve recently noticed that many of my peers are sometimes overwhelmed by the internet; they feel as if they’re stretched too thin and that their attention is constantly shifting between too many different platforms. I think a portion of that feeling comes from systems that bombard them with push notifications. Reducing that barrage — on all systems, not just phones — could be a great way to start building a healthier relationship with technology.

I've only recommended one VPN service, ever (and no, I don't have any financial relationship to them): Mullvad. They have always seemed to be one of the few entities that practices the mantra, "You don't have to protect what you don't collect."
This is quite a press release:
"Mullvad VPN was subject to a search warrant. Customer data not compromised
20 April 2023 NEWS
On April 18 at least six police officers from the National Operations Department (NOA) of the Swedish Police visited the Mullvad VPN office in Gothenburg with a search warrant.
They intended to seize computers with customer data.
In line with our policies such customer data did not exist. We argued they had no reason to expect to find what they were looking for and any seizures would therefore be illegal under Swedish law. After demonstrating that this is indeed how our service works and them consulting the prosecutor they left without taking anything and without any customer information.
If they had taken something that would not have given them access to any customer information.
Mullvad has been operating our VPN service for over 14 years. This is the first time our offices have been visited with a search warrant."

in reply to Emmanuele Bassi • • •@ebassi I thought libadwaita restyled the file picker to make it fit better in GNOME :/
In that case, are you aware of what's happening? I'll correct the post
(This is one of those times one gets confident of being correct without bothering to check, sorry)
Emmanuele Bassi
in reply to TheEvilSkeleton • • •libadwaita adds some tweaks to the file chooser, yes; some of those should be reintegrated into GTK's default theme, especially the padding and the button styling, but Transmission is not a GNOME application, so there's no expectation it should look like one, even if it uses GTK.
Maybe I got your tone wrong, but it sounded like you were complaining about visual issues.
TheEvilSkeleton
in reply to Emmanuele Bassi • • •@ebassi oh, I wasn't complaining, and I wasn't bothered or concerned by anything either.
I'm aware of everything you've said. I just wanted to let everyone know how the GTK4 (without anything from libadwaita changes) file picker looks.
Sorry for the confusion, but just to clarify, I wasn't complaining at all.
