"In General Electric’s annual report from 1953, the company bragged about how much it paid in taxes and how much it was spending on payroll. It explicitly said that “maximizing employment security is a prime company goal.” The founder of Johnson & Johnson said that the company’s responsibility to its employees was higher than its responsibility to its shareholders. Corporations then had a radically different conception of their role in society compared with corporations today." archive.is/66hPb

Alright, #gardening hivemind, I have a bunch of self-watering pots, and not enough #plants. What would be your suggestions for zone 6 south-oriented full-sun-resistant plants that can survive frequent 80 km/h (50 mph) wind gusts? Preferably edible, indoors/shade-capable too, or evergreens... I need unkillable stuff.

#AppleNews is evidently unfamiliar with how to collapse a view or hide elements.

Don't force #CNN content into top stories when I've chosen to #BlockCNN

Similar to but worse than the "ESPN tax" from cable subscriptions, this is just pushing bad content on users.

(this poor #Apple UX is an intentional choice, not a "hard to solve" issue...)

I’ve been playing with Hey Pi over the last few days. It’s actually pretty awesome. the conversation flows a lot more smoothly than ChatGPT, and it’s not always complaining about being an AI language model. The only sort of problem I can think of so far is, it tends to output shorter responses, even when longer ones are needed. Maybe I should have it introduce itself:

“Pleroma friends, meet Pi, an AI designed to talk with you about anything you want, in a caring, thoughtful way. He’s empathetic, creative, and open-minded. Feel free to try chatting with him if you’d like to meet him. He’s friendly and loves making new friends.”

#India banned encrypted apps @briar @element & @threemaapp based on the argument that these apps would be used by "terrorists".

This makes India the first democracy to act like Russian or Iranian autocrats.

Security researcher finds the lyrics to Coldplay's "The Scientist" embedded in a 2020 version of firmware for Kingston's KC2000 M.2 NVMe SSD. No one knows why it's there. "You can download the firmware and fire up a hex editor (or use an online one) and load up the 'S2681103.bin' file. A quick search for one of the lyric strings such as 'ComeUpToMeet' will bring you to the start of the firmware section where words from Coldplay's The Scientist can be found." tomshardware.com/news/security…

This seems like an odd way to build an end-to-end encrypted messaging system...

"if someone–for example, a malicious insider, or Twitter itself as a result of a compulsory legal process--were to compromise an encrypted conversation, neither the sender or receiver would know"

The survey part of a wider research project on moderation and community management on decentralized, user-driven networks.

The findings will be published as an article afterwards, and result in a set of tools and recommendations for moderators, admins and community managers looking to establish similar decentralised social networks.

Thank you for participating - boost this so we get a wider reach💜

“#Layoffs are definitely a confession of poor #management," Jeffrey Pfeffer, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford Business School, told me. His reasoning: Research shows that generally, layoffs don't improve a company's fortunes. Quite the opposite: They don't reliably raise a company's profits or stock price, but they do reliably reduce remaining employees' morale, commitment, productivity, and trust.
