Really happy to share pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-resea… !

Back in 2020, during grant-funded work on the next-generation pip resolver, @sprblm did fascinating user experience research & design work. pyfound.blogspot.com/search/la…

They wrote several useful documents that took a while to get merged, but now live in pip's documentation! Like:

how to design a survey pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-resea…

how users think pip should react to dependency conflicts pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-resea…

security practices pip.pypa.io/en/latest/ux-resea…

It was so valuable to get to work with UX experts on pip. Example: github.com/pypa/pip/issues/837… their research findings helped us improve the format and content of the "ResolutionImpossible" error message, so users could actually work out what went wrong and how to fix it.

There's a wealth of information in the resources that Superbloom (formerly Simply Secure) developed.

Not just for for Python packaging tools developers! For anyone working on developer experience, especially on the command line!

The thing I want to shout from the rooftops is: THIS IS POSSIBLE.

#opensource projects can hire UX experts, who gather quantitative & qualitative data, and who then recommend specific choices. Maintainers don't just have to guess how to design good, usable features and interfaces.

Yes, even for command-line tools.

Yes, even without a big company running the project. We got grants: pyfound.blogspot.com/2019/12/m…

And tool*chains* can pool resources to invest & learn together! harihareswara.net/posts/2023/u…

The U.S. government is warning that smart locks securing entry to an estimated 50,000 dwellings nationwide contain hard-coded credentials that can be used to remotely open any of the locks. The lock's maker Chirp Systems remains unresponsive, even though it was first notified about the critical weakness in March 2021. Meanwhile, Chirp's parent company, RealPage, Inc., is being sued by multiple U.S. states for allegedly colluding with landlords to illegally raise rents.

Support for RFC 9421 - HTTP Message Signatures in #curl ?

github.com/curl/curl/discussio…

#curl
in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

That would be super awesome!

One thing that I'd like to ask, if it's not too much trouble - a major user of HTTP signatures is the fediverse, although the most common version used is draft-cavage-http-signatures rather than RFC 9421, and the two versions are incompatible (quoted header keys, different header structure to express the signature value). Misskey has a proposal to express the supported version in nodeinfo, although for legacy applications being able to use the older standard would provide value as well.

in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

HTTP signatures are widely used in the ActivityPub ecosystem, including by Mastodon. swicg.github.io/activitypub-ht…

Convenient support in curl might make it easier to test some ActivityPub server functionality, although different ActivityPub implementations currently require different versions of the HTTP signature standard (see the above link for details).

I recently discovered Chronically Capable, a job board for people with disabilities or chronic illnesses: wearecapable.org

It’s mostly U.S. based for now, but there are ads for other countries, too. I want every one of us jobseekers to find the perfect position this year. 😊

Boosts are warmly welcomed to this post as are suggestions for other hashtags to include if I’m missing good ones.

Okay legit confusion here and asking for clarification.

I saw something that said that transgender can be seen as an "umbrella" term for both binary-adjacent folks (trans men + women) and non-binary folks (like those who are gender fluid and gender queer).

Does this match people's understanding (and more importantly lived experiences?)

Source is from this post: instagram.com/p/C5MPL46SuIR/ (the person who shared it identifies as trans but is gender fluid)

in reply to mcc

…and then after that had been going on for a trans "generation" or two, you had a significant number of trans people who were used to using "transgender" specifically to refer to social or medical transitioners, and wound up surprised if you wound up including (say) crossdressers in the "transgender" categories. And then you get intra-community confusion, like around 2010 ppl trying to introduce the term "trans*" and the older transes going "but trans is already an umbrella term"
in reply to mcc

Anyway sorry if this is more infor than you wanted, but

- In general, I think everyone in the community will recognize "transgender" as including not just "mtf"/"ftm" trans but also nonbinary people
- But if you ask within the trans community whether it includes gender-questioning and crossdressers, you will start an argument
- Probably it's best to think of "transgender" as a broad umbrella and use more specific terms if you mean that for some reason
- This may change again someday
