Oh, cool somebody finally figured it out...

As you probably know, the Microsoft Security Center has an API that lets you query which AV is installed and whether it is up-to-date.

What is less well-known, is that it also has another, not publicly known API, that lets you tell it "I'm installing another AV now, please disable Defender". This is what all other AV products use. Microsoft has provided to them documentation of this API but under NDA.

Many years ago, I made a proof-of-concept - a small VBScript script that would use this API via WMI to "install" an imaginary AV, thus turning off Defender - but since it was based on information learned under NDA, I obviously couldn't make it public.

Now somebody has reverse-engineered the API from AVAST and has done pretty much the same (albeit a bit over-complicated) in C++:

ICQ is closing down. It was really at its height in 2000 and that is when we integrated ICQ into Opera. We made a small (5k) client and it worked really well.

AOL had purchased ICQ and they were concerned about MSN taking users from them by connecting to their service, so they stopped supporting 3rd party clients. We contacted them, to see if they would make an exception for us, but they did not.

They said that if we removed our 5k client, we could maybe discuss bundling their client, but it was bigger than Opera, so that was not going to happen.

I mean, hardware-wise, a blind-friendly GPS receiver is basically the same as a book player with an extra GPS chip, and those aren't that expensive. You can probably re-use half of the software stack too. If you're making a GPS receiver and a book player anyways, it makes a lot of sense to stuff the book player software into the GPS, as it already has all the right hardware.

Publico hoy en mi blog personal un par de textos que ya tienen unos años, pero a los que tengo afecto y que no dejo de encontrar valiosos.

Como parte de mis estudios universitarios de Antropología Social y Cultural, cursé una asignatura de Antropología Forense orientada a la recuperación de la memoria y de la verdad con respecto a conflictos en los que se producen violaciones masivas de los Derechos Humanos. Durante el cuatrimestre que duró, realizamos dos prácticas de laboratorio en la que los profesores pusieron ante nosotros los restos óseos de cuerpos de víctimas de la Guerra civil española, aún sin identificar, para mostrarnos las técnicas de identificación habituales. Los textos en cuestión son fruto de la experiencia de cada una de las dos prácticas. Ojalá os gusten (¡siempre se agradecen los comentarios!).

Estudios como este (que no es el único, ni ofrece un dato atípico) ponen de manifiesto lo que pagamos por un coche que no vamos a usar quienes no poseemos ninguno. Al igual que ocurre con las viviendas unifamiliares (quienes vivimos en piso las estamos subvencionando), el modelo del coche se sustenta sobre una base social empobrecida que abona impuestos cuyo destino es la ayuda a la compra, mantenimiento y combustible de los coches de quienes más dinero tienen.
