Now, the CEO of iFixit (supposedly ~$50M/yr revenue) calls 11 QPS, "abuse", saying "you're tying up our devops resources", implying it's reasonable for a $50M/yr regularly viral web property to need significant intervention if traffic increases by 11 QPS.

@ludiofines Hi there, you can send encrypted emails to Gmail and other platforms by sharing a password with that recipient. They will receive an email to their Gmail account which includes a link to an encrypted Tuta mailbox where they can use the password to view your message.

Oh look at this So automattic/Tumblr's CEO is making the company email servers to redirect all mail from teamblind.com to his own personal address instead of the actual person who registered to Blind, so he can know who signed up using their corporate email (the only way to sign up).
Not only that, but by doing this, he could just go through the company email address list, hit the "forgot your password" link, and find out who already has an account, and even steal it.

We really fucking need a community owned search engine index that fucks the corporate rules (but still respects personal websites' indexing preferences) that's federated and independent. YaCy exists but it's really old and slow and meh, we need a big new thing.
Common Crawl is the closest thing we have to an open index, though it doesn’t meet your requirement of ignoring robots.txt for corporate websites while obeying it for personal sites. Unfortunately, being open and publicly available means that people use it to train LLMs. Google did this for initial versions of Bard, so a lot of sites block its crawler. Most robots.txt guides for blocking GenAI crawlers include an entry for it now.
OWS.EU constantly thrives to move forward with more transparent, self-determined web search. With the aim to build a Europe-based Open Web Index, choosing trustworthy, powerful crawling partners is key.
@hook CC is an index for anybody to use. This reduces the barrier to create alternatives to other indexes, like those owned by Google/Bing/Yandex. On one hand, this makes upstart engines and research like the Web Data Commons possible; on the other hand, it allows all sorts of bad actors (non-consensual GenAI, for instance) to index your pages easily. If Common Crawl embedded information from the upcoming W3C TDM Reservation Protocol in each site/page, this would be partially resolved; bad actors could ignore this but well-behaved actors would at least know what they’re welcome to do with each page. Right now, they don’t even know so they can’t comply with your preferred rules easily; all they have are X-Robots tags, which are a bit limited.
I think that the CC does more good than harm on my site, so I allow it. I can’t speak for everyone else.
@iacore federated search indexing is a thing (YaCy is one attempt, but results are mixed), as is distributed crawling with a centralized search index (mwmbl).
@lispi314 @Jessica @404mediaco @Mojeek @privateger Brave Search (I know…) follows rules for GoogleBot in robots.txt if Brave’s robots.txt entry isn’t explicitly defined. I know it’s not the only engine to do this, but it’s the only one I recall off the top of my head. I imagine that this is the direction more engines are heading in.
