I just learnt of the passing of Pierre Cartier last Saturday. I was lucky to attend his George Kempf Lecture at Johns Hopkins a decade ago titled "A quantum group as Galois group for some difference equations". For Windows, I find Winaero Tweaker to be extremely valuable. It allows you to modify so many settings in your Windows 11 PC. It's very accessible with both JAWS and NVDA. Note: Winaero's Web site also promotes software called the Outbyte PC Repair Tool. I have no information as to the safety or accessibility of that application.

I love 1Password for password management. I admit to being late to the party when it comes to using a password manager but once I started using it I've found it to be one of the most liberating tools on my PC. Everyone should use a password manager, whether it's 1Password or another option. It not only frees you from remembering passwords but it can store long, strong passwords and it greatly reduces your chances of getting caught up in a phishing scam. It's accessible in Windows and fairly accessible on iOS. I can't speak for the Mac or Android versions. www.1password.com

Oh my gosh! This haptic time feature is bloody brilliant! You have to tap just in the right place, but I can consistently make it work now. How fricking awesome is that!
@DavidGoldfield Reason it goes off randomly, sometimes I have accidentally gone to pick the watch up, for example, or put the watch down, and it sets off the taptic time feature.
When I woke up this morning and looked at my weather app, I thought there had been some mistake with my location - because there's no way it could be 58 degrees F (14 C) out on August 20th... but no, it was correct, and it was that cold out this morning - and will be for the next few days at least.
What happened to summer? I'm not ready for fall yet!!
The holidays end today, and the first school day is tomorrow. I don't know, the holidays went once more much to fast. This time I havce evewn less motiwation to go there because I will be learning French, and first I am not up to that and I see no reason why I should do that. There is for sure a way to don't do it and it's just a test, and I probably would be able to abort, but when? Why I need it, and what I ever will need it for? As adition will I have to stand up 2 hours earlier on mondays, and will miss two other hours somewhere in the week and if I haven't luck that are hours I have to learn for after school time. Meh. No reason, but we do it anyway. Typical German school system.
Interesting. When I was in school, I could choose between two foreign languages. The mandatory choice was between French and Russian, and I chose the latter. However, I never needed it again, so I never stuck with it.
@radiorobbe There was no selection. It is due a coperation our school makes with another school, and I would go to the other school to learn French. That takes about 5 minutes walking or maybe 10. Then go back again. For that purpose I would ahve to carry my laptop everytime and get a jaws lizense and that useless stuff. I already now think about telling them that this is not something after a few weeks or months. They told me this is an option if it is to much for me or I note that it isn't good.

Most people on here know this, but to those who need to hear it: People who work in assistive technology are not machines. They have working hours like everyone else, they have lives. Firing questions at them at all times of the day or night about technology, whether they may happen to work with it or not, is not OK. They are not your personal twenty-four hour a day support system.

It always floors me whenn I get emails out of the blue from someone I don't know and, without any form of introduction or asking if it's OK to request support, they launch into an explanation of their problem, as though I'm a 24/7 help desk rep. On one hand, it's flattering that total strangers are aware of me and have confidence that I can help them but ...
@DavidGoldfield To be honest, it drives me wild, and it's not even me it happens to. A lot of people who work in assistive tech, including my own husband, run their own businesses, work longer hours than people will ever realize, and the only time some people ever so much as talk to them is when they want something. No please, no thank you, no sorry if I'm bothering you, nada, zip!
I imagine that a lot of people who work in the assistive technology field who are known to the community have to deal with situations like these. It's important that those of us who experience this know how to establish and maintain healthy boundaries.
When I am the person asking for help, I try to minimize the load I create by taking the following reasonable measures. I ask a discussion forum (mailing list, etc.) rather than an individual directly. I provide proper details (version numbers of software, steps to reproduce the issue, other technical information likely to be valuable in identifying the cause). I search online for potential solutions, check documentation, and experiment as appropriate. I'm not a nontechnical user of software. However, the above steps can be taken by people who don't have a lot of technical expertise as well.
@jason And asking questions on public forums and mailing lists is perfectly appropriate. It doesn't obligate any one individual to respond and it also allows a larger group within the community to assist the questioner, not to mention benefiting others who may have the same question or problem either now or in the future. Sending a private email only benefits the questioner and actually could limit the quality and timeliness of help they might wind up receiving, as there may well be people who are more knowledgeable in the subject than the person being privately asked.

Can anyone else read text they're writing in the latest #Thunderbird with #NVDA 2024.3? I couldn't in one email and thought it was a fluke, but I'm sending another and it's happened again. I can copy to notepad and type there, but that's just silly. I thought I might have an addon loaded that was breaking stuff but apparently not. This is a bad time.
Next time this happens, can you tell me whether restarting NVDA fixes it? There's a bug impacting NVDA and browsers which causes this kind of behaviour that no one has been able to track down yet. It's utterly bizarre. But restarting NVDA fixes it, hence the question.
It's a very exasperating bug regardless. Believe me, I've tried to track it down, but I still don't know wtf causes it. It's some deep failure somewhere in the Windows COM framework but I don't understand how NVDA is triggering it.

@jcsteh That one, together with the same failure with table navigation hotkeys requiring a restart to work are my only two annoyances when using Firefox with NVDA. I encounter them both daily here and really wish you the best of luck with finding the solution, I can understand the difficulty.
@jcsteh I still think NVDA is my favourite screen reader, but it seems to me to be having conflict with more and more apps. I mean, why does shutting down Tweesecake take NVDAwith it most of the time, for instance? That's a really odd one.
@jcsteh 1. Remember, the average user is not a dev, and probably hates Github, like Ido. 2. I really feel that addons need regulating a lot more, and being broken a lot less. Things are getting less and less smooth and we seem to be needing ever more and more complex addons just to do basic things like navigate our email folders and messages! 3. Sadly, we are running out of keystrokes and this is making even more problems and conflicts. I increasingly feel like giving up with computers, to be honest.
@davetaylor2112 Fair enough. Entirely your choice, but if you want any chance of a diagnosis and fix, that's how you increase that chance. Devs can only do so much when the info available is near 0.
@davetaylor2112 I get the frustration, really I do. I often say that having a disability in general is like death by a million papercuts. That doesn't change the fact that devs can't help you with near 0 info, though. But everyone runs out of spoons and this may just be something you don't have the spoons for, and that's fine. You just can't expect a fix either.
@jcsteh You know what? Ijust had an idea, but I'm not fighting with Github to submit it. NVDA could do with a crash reporter, and if that's included in the usage stats, I suggest the dialog entry is changed to mark that
@TheQuinbox @jcsteh Funnily enough, the problem happened in Slack just after I sent that last post. The log shows that NVDA has the right value for the text field, but arrowing only says "blank". Selecting text works, in that NVDA speaks the selection. Deleting also usually works, speaking the deleted character. It's arrow navigation that's broken. Arrowing shows no problems in the log.
@alexhall @TheQuinbox @jcsteh Can confirm. Sometimes this happens in Slack when there's a modal open that covers the area visually but doesn't have keyboard focus. Dismissing it sometimes restores the field back to working. Likewise, restarting NVDA doesn't fix the issue when I haven't dismissed that modal.
@tuukkao @alexhall @TheQuinbox My guess is that this particular instance is likely to be a different bug. Based on what I do know about the problem, I can't fathom why a visually obscuring modal would trigger it. Still, it's a data point to consider.
@jcsteh Slack's dialog component has some bugs related to when aria-hidden is applied to the rest of the UI. But for what it's worth, this happens for me regardless of whether a dialog is open or not, and it was one of the first things the Slack team looked at while debugging it. So I think they're different issues that just manifest in a similar way. @tuukkao @alexhall @TheQuinbox @FreakyFwoof

@alexhall @TheQuinbox NVDA unfortunately catches and swallows the relevant exception without logging it. That's something I want to fix at some point so it's at least more obvious when this bug is occurring.

The monster she killed was a known sex trafficker of young black girls. He’d been arrested and released without bail by the same cops that arrested this girl. He brutalized and trafficked this child, and she killed him. (I have no problem with that, personally. )
Wisconsin has a 2008 law on the books that allows trafficking as a defense, and her lawyers chose to plead out instead of taking it to trial.
I’m not a lawyer, but from the outside, that sure as fuck looks like malpractice. Let’s find a way to free this kid.
