Friends, it’s true. Nanaimo bars are really good. If you find yourselves in Canada, especially in Nanaimo, you got to try some. Your sweet tooth will thank you.
in reply to Just Martin

@mcourcel I actually did know that. I had a reason for asking. I’m going to be there in October or November.
in reply to Jason Fayre

@jfayre @mcourcel Oh wow! We always play tag. Lol! I know you and Christine were here when I wasn’t, then you’ll be here again in October when I’m not. I’d love to meet you and Christine. Better luck next year, or something.

I've seen a few blind folks posting their positive experiences with the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, specifically the AI. Wanted to post a quick counterpoint.

It wasn't as useful as I'd hoped--I couldn't get it to OCR or summarize menus for example--but I was mostly happy using it for last mile visual help. "What's this piece of paper, what are the cooking instructions for this pizza, what brand are these dishwasher pods, etc."

Except a few weeks ago, Meta AI just stopped responding. I can ask it for the time but that's about it. I've connected a calling app but it refuses to call out, and of course visual/image-based help is dead too.

This issue has persisted through multiple app resets and factory resets of the glasses. AFAIK everything is updated, too.

The cherry on top is that I just pecked out a bug report using BSI on Android, and submitting that seemed to hard-lock/crash the app with no indication that the report even went through. So who the hell knows if I actually did the thing.

I'm not too upset since I have the disposable income to spare, but I'm regretting the purchase a bit now and can't really recommend them. Real bummer--I got a decent amount of use out of them when they worked but now they're just an expensive headset.

in reply to Nolan Darilek

Great glad you got it sorted! Yeah it basically won’t do PII at all.

One time I tried to get it to read the CVC off the back of my credit card to pay my electric bill and it refused. That became some fairly colorful product feedback :)

OK so it wasn't just me not getting the right incantation. This thing is like a pedant toddler sometimes. I think I even explicitly asked if it couldn't speak any identifying details and it just spewed some bullshit. Thanks for confirming, hope they take that product feedback seriously.

THE PERFECT HUSBAND
Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cellular phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk.
Everyone else in the room stops to listen.
MAN: "Hello"
WOMAN: "Hi Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?"
MAN: "Yes."
WOMAN: "I'm at the shops now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $2,000; is it OK if I buy it?"
MAN: "Sure, go ahead if you like it that much."
WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked."
MAN: "How much?"
WOMAN: "$90,000." ;
MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options."
WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing... I was just talking to Janie and found out that the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $980,000 for it."
MAN: "Well, then go ahead and make an offer of $900,000. They'll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra eighty-thousand if it's what you really
want."
WOMAN: "OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!"
MAN: "Bye! I love you, too."
The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths wide open.
He turns and asks, "Anyone know whose phone this is?"

Just putting a this out there: I think $DJT is such a naked pump-and-dump scheme that (provided he doesn't win) it'll be a big part of his final downfall.

It was up 15% yesterday, on NO news, which reeks of a pump and dump. Market makers can prop up the price with a few big buys and get out, leaving naïve investors holding the bag. If that's _the plan_, that's textbook securities fraud, and a criminal conspiracy.

He can start selling his 60% stake in 4 weeks.

Sometimes your text document is perfect, it's just not in the right format. For changing extensions, for converting to PDF, RTF and EPUB, Morphosis is the perfect app! Just drop your file in and chose what new form you want your words to take. Supporting a wide range of export formats, Morphosis even lets you choose between sans and serif for your output!

Autism and ADHD are NOT trendy. They're more common than we thought, and particularly manifest differently in women, so all the people that were missed as kids are connecting the dots on why certain things were so much harder for them in their lives than most people. And that lets them come up with actually effective strategies.

It's a very, very good thing that lots of adults are figuring this out. Life is much easier with proper language and connecting to other similar folks!

Is it just me or is the iOS share sheet really painful with VoiceOver? Getting to the Copy button is incredibly tedious and unpredictable. Jump to last item doesn't work properly, flicking right and left is asymmetric, it's just a big mess. Any tips for navigating it more effectively? #accessibility
in reply to Jamie Teh

Completely agree with minimising swiping on the share sheet, get close to what you want and swipe from there.

Other thoughts, disable apps you don't need, try to move stuff you do need closer to the beginning of the list.

also, the problem with the item chooser is it can only choose items that are visible on the screen and the share sheet has multiple pages. Actually, that's another suggestion, touch close to the right edge then three-finger swipe to the next page.

in reply to Jamie Teh

What I have learnt is don’t use the flick gestures so much in that screen. LOL. What I usually do to get to the copy, is bring up the share sheet, tap the lower half of the screen to highlight one of the icons in the share sheet at the bottom, Then three finger flick up to scroll at one page, then touch somewhere around the middle to lower middle of the Phone and you should find your copy button there. I do the same for save to Files, as that is usually on that second screen.

Today in Techbros failing to understand consent:

The Microsoft overlords parachuted into management of the 5e, 5.5e and dnd brand are automatically updating character sheets made using DnDBeyond.

Just a simple tick box of "would you like to do this?" And they'd get a lot of happy compliance but, they don't get consent and won't care that you just don't change someone's character sheet without permission.

It. Is. Not. Done.

This is your periodic reminder that there are numerous incredibly gifted people doing important work which I would very much like to support with my money but can't because they're publishing their work on #Substack. Substack gets a cut of any subscriptions bought on it, and I won't give Substack any of my money for a lot of reasons, but most notably because #TransRightsAreHumanRights and Substack is a #NaziBar.

“Capitalism”: The system that ensures, whenever human interaction with a large corporation is required, a lengthy wait on hold will occur because “we are busier than usual”, and that while on hold, the caller will repeatedly be reminded that if they just went away and used the Web site, everything would be fine.

Agree! BTW, it’s a much-discussed issue and the solutions are on the way! dragonscave.space/@miki/113006…

Idea:

Image recognition apps for the blind should do an OCR pass on the image first, and include any text found in the prompt. The LLM should be told not to do its own OCR and to rely on the text provided.

LLMs are notoriously bad at OCR, particularly for non-English languages. To make things worse, unlike normal OCR engines, their badness doesn't result in typos and garbled text, but in perfectly understandable and grammatically valid text that says something very different than what's actually included in the image.

An OCR pass should help "ground" the LLMs here.

I am falling in love with the “equalizer” feature in in VOiceOver’s speech settings in iOS18. The world is not the same when I toggle it off. :)
in reply to victor tsaran

I feel I haven’t been able to use most voices because their lower frequencies compete too much with noise going on around me. I wonder if this will change that or if I’m too attached to Samantha compact.
in reply to victor tsaran

I am too. The compact Zoe voice is far more tolerable with EQ applied. It doesn't sound as tunnely.

Having the Meta glasses is kind of like having a really nice car with a speed limiter on it. It's an Android-powered pair of glasses with wi-fi, bluetooth, really good microphones, and a camera. It could be a tinkerer's dream, but instead it only runs one AI, only lets you video call on Meta's apps (which is not vender lock-in so much as iOS limitations), can't record audio-only, and can only record 3-minute videos. I have one because it's still pretty damn convenient, and I am hoping it expands beyond what it is now, and I regret nothing, so this is a pretty pointless paragraph. I have yet to try a video call on WhatsApp, mostly because my mother is visiting right now, but I am excited for that part. I do have the impression Meta is not done adding functionality, and I'm excited to see what they do with them. I have no idea how popular these are outside the blind community—I'm really not sure what people would do with them in a normal context—but I am still enjoying them.
in reply to simon.old

I think it's like a telegraph of the glasses. They will only get better and better from here. But oh the battery... A better battery is what we need first and foremost!

Bug Fixes

• Fixed: With VoiceOver enabled, some DMs simply would not open, no matter how much double-tapping you did. VoiceOver was built for increased accessibility, not to make messages literally inaccessible. Our sincere apologies.

The behaviour I would _like_ is that whether I come back via the app switcher or whether I come back via the icon ("coming in the front door again" as I sometimes think of it), it shows me whatever I was last doing.

@unchartedworlds Hi! Sorry, it is a known bug, and we are working to solve it. Will keep everybody posted when it is solved.

I just upgraded my 2 year old #framework laptop with a 2.8k display and 3.5kg hinges. It feels like a brand new machine. I love this product.

This is a very specific need. I need to find someone who has an Everest-d v5 braille embosser with a 1365 motherboard. There is an sd card in that device I need an image of so that I might get my machine up and running again. If anyone can help me, please reach out.
