I wonder how many Macs have been bought over the years only to be destined to just sit in a landfill forever because Apple couldn't get off their ass and fix their dan screen reader.

This sounds like a cool useful LM! marktechpost.com/2024/09/19/wo…

Tagged a release of the gnome-raw-thumbnailer, but I can't seem to find how I can upload a tarball.

@matrix I'm having a lot of FOMO looking at #MatrixConf. Congratulations on Matrix 2.0! When will it be available to the rest of us in Synapse?

A bit last-minute this time, but we have a hackfest/release event coming up next weekend in Berlin feat. @postmarketOS, @p2panda, and more!

More details to follow, but here's a teaser :P

Through my job I've become a strong test-driven development proponent. I honestly don't even want to write code without having tests in place now
in reply to Chris 🌱

You end up writing more tests than code, but in the end the actual code is so clean and utilitarian

No idea how this is possible, but VoiceOver in macOS 15 is worse! I just had it crash and not come back for 5 seconds while I was arrowing through a 3 KB swift file in Textmate. I've also had it go not responding for up to 30 seconds when I tried to put my VO cursor over the table of logic key commands. The oh so demanding things I ask...
in reply to Quin

@pitermach Honest question, what's the point of VO's indentation reporting if IndentBeeper exists and works so much better?

I've turned it on for 5 minutes, then went back to good old Hammerspoon.

in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

@miki If it worked well and didn't cause crashes, it would obviously be better. To their credit they finally got rid of the latency between the sound playing and it speaking the line, but it still happens sometimes that it tries to play sounds for what feels like the whole text field or paragraph when the focus changes IE exiting an autocomplete popup. And that's when things really start dying

WorkAdventure’s David Négrier is giving an excellent talk about their journey into using Matrix behind the scenes for their product.

As the person who is responsible for onboarding new people and developers, this talk is so valuable to me!

Custom Maps Help

I've been playing around with Google Maps lately to create custom maps.

I don't like google but have no experience with any other apps and have never tried mapping of any sort before.

I'm trying to create a map layer(s) that has historic sites, stone circles, woodland, cemeteries, UNESCO sites etc. So if I'm traveling I can stop and see them.

I've created my own Google Map using lists of sites from Wikipedia. This has gone ok but leads to a lot of data cleansing and the functionality isn't great.

I've seen this website but it isn't as complete as the Wikipedia text lists ive imported: hmdb.org/

I'm completely new to this and have no experience. Are there any good resources out there for me to use or contribute to?

I'd like to de-google as much as possible.

P.S. do I need to enable developer mode or root my phone to install open street map now?

Thanks!

NAME THE MAN. I will not be surprised to learn the man is a xenophobic piece of garbage and that this attack is a direct result of the CAQ policies of hate, fear, and division in this province.

I just remembered the famous story about how the original ARM processor had extremely low power consumption by accident, so much so that it could run off leakage current. [1] I wonder if any recent ARM application processor (not a microcontroller, but something with an MMU that can run Linux) has power consumption that low. And if so, how does it fare on benchmarks?

Nicht dass ich wüsste. Wieso?

@mhoye your talk at #MatrixConf was PHENOMENAL. I cannot wait to get the transcript... it was full of brilliant quotes and it definitely inspired me to talk about privacy in a different way

to that last post I ask. what in the world can you even read on an 8 sell display? I'm not the greatest braille reader, but yeah...
in reply to Darren Duff

the date. The Time. distance to a turn when driving or walking. A countdown for public speaking or any other discrete timekeeping activity. Weather info. Distance to a lost air tag. percentage of light or sound in view of the camera or range of the mic. An OTP code. Altitude if on an aircraft. Weight on a scale. Blood pressure, glucos, oxygen or heartbeat readings.
Just to pick a few out of thin air. :)
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo 24-hour time even to two-second digits would fit exactly into 8 cells. Cute, never thought of that.
in reply to Andre Louis

@FreakyFwoof whenever I present publicly I keep a hhmm in the corner of my display, either a countdown or an up depending on the circumstances.
If I have a well defined talk that 'm familiar with, I replace it with a 6 dot cell that fills in over the defined time period instead.
in reply to Andre Louis

@FreakyFwoof @cachondo You could even do 6 if you removed the colons.

You could also go further and use the upper 4 dots for the time and the lower 4 for the date, assuming digits and no letters.

in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo I'll add to that:

Last 8 digits of a phone number / first 8 chars of a contact name, often enough to identify the caller.

First letters of a name, to identify a speaker in a meeting.

TOTP code.

Time / room (or time / beginning of name) for next appointment.

Line number of next incoming bus / tram / train.

A huge tip if this happens to you to folks updating to the latest version of Mac OS 15 with VoiceOver, if VoiceOver starts spouting garbage when reading any text/objects etc, go to VoiceOver Utility, File menu, and choose reset All VoiceOver settings. Unload/reload VoiceOver with clean settings and things are fixed.

Full room for @travisr’s talk on Authenticated Media! It’s Saturday and people are still very engaged!

Sometimes being a #HealthAndSafety / #IAQ advocate can feel a little lonely, but I'm an eternal optimistic – and not without reason.

When I bring air quality monitors to events, and make the data easy to access, people respond. People here at #MatrixConf have been monitoring the air quality, adjusting ventilation, and noting when things are concerning. I never even had to ask!

The trick is making the invisible visible, and giving people the tools to make informed decisions.

... and in case you're curious, here are the live data feeds for the event!

Z mých příspěvků jste mohli nabýt dojmu, že Utah je jen suchá poušť, plná červených a i jinak barevných skal a šutrů. V Utahu je ale i jiná pustina. Mokrá a slaná. Velké solné jezero. Nevídám ho příliš často, vlastně jen když někam odlétám😉

On my way to day 2 of the #matrixConf, and I'm so looking forward to a day full of discussions about the social impact of our work, how it works behind the scenes, and how projects use Matrix in their products.

And you can join the fun remotely too, at 2024.matrix.org/watch!

Inspired by Google's move to remove @organicmaps from the Playstore without warning, I finally decided to move my > 3,000 Google Maps saved places to Organic Maps. To facilitate doing this for others' benefit, I made a quick webpage to convert your Google Maps GeoJSON data to GPX and KMZ files that render well in Organic Maps.

ArcaneChat (previously known as #DeltaLab) an alternative Delta Chat client for #Android is now available in official F-Droid store!

If you already have it you can securely continue to upgrade it now from F-Droid (or #IzzyOnDroid) thanks to #ReproducibleBuilds which ensures the apk matches the source code and not me nor F-Droid is manipulating the binary 🎉
