Should you need inconspicuous ringtones or notification sounds, there's a new project aiming to do exactly this at sober-ringtones.wize.io/ for free. Previews are available as well (press/click the image next to the download link if you use a screen reader). #ringtones #notificationSounds #free

Any interest in learning to #code from the #Blind community on an old-school platform?

a MOO is a text-based virtual world. if you ever played an old interactive fiction or text adventure game you'll be familiar with the idea. you type in commands like "go north" to move, "put coin in box", "kill dragon with sword" and so forth, and you get written responses unfolding the story.

This type of interface was taken online with a MOO in the 1990's, and rather than a playable story, you can join in and work with other people in an interactive, virtual world.

More than that, as well as just playing, MOO has a rich and beginner-friendly programming language, so you can create objects and code them to do things to your own specifications.

through a series of structured lessons with code samples and plenty of explanation you'll learn some of the basics of any programming language, all whilst having fun and playing about. The world is always open and you can build as many rooms and items as you like. You can practice your written English, socialising and programming all at once, in a 100% text-based environment perfect for screen readers and Braille displays.

This will be my twenty-seventh empty MOO. Each one has gone off in a different direction with between 1 and 15 participants, mostly young visually-impaired school-children and teens needing an introduction to programming in a fun way when the UK introduced coding as part of our national curriculum.
I taught high school computing and college for a decade, and I'm wanting to open this opportunity up to more blind and visually-impaired people because coding is fun, and a MOO is a fun thing to play with.
it's Only worthwhile if we have the numbers though, so if you're not interested please pass on if you can.

Yesterday's toot sparked an amazing discussion:

How can we fight off Google's fingerpriting❓

Share your insights so we can update the blog post. Let's make the web a better place for everyone. 💪 🔒 ❤️

🚨 BREAKING 🚨

#Google just launched a new era of tracking. Digital #fingerprinting.

❌ No consent
❌ No escape

Here’s why this is a #privacy nightmare much worse than #cookies: 👇

Holy fuck, people seriously need to stop this bullshit that Flathub inclusion rules and reviews are lax... I am going to send you the bill for my broken monitor next time you make such claims.

*Every* *Single* *Statement* about Flathub here is False.

And this has nothing to do with why Flathub is popular either.

For fuck sake..

I honestly can't watch a single Brodie video without cringing hard; but this looks like yet another case of "distro person says that software distribution is a solved problem as long as everyone uses the same distribution and tooling to package software" that led me to write that blog post about "dev vs ops" in 2017. In the end, Richard changed his mind, but remember: it is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.

the fun part is that Flatpak and Flathub took the "we need to get better" conclusion and made it happen, whereas distro folks just shut off when I pointed out that they are becoming complacent and risk becoming so irrelevant to the Linux landscape that nobody is going to replace packagers retiring. Oh, well…

Four years ago I got my first threat of violence for my Open Source work that I ended up reporting to the police. Thick skin and all that, but there are limits...

the follow up/apology is painful to read. I’ve had to deal with a few people like that, and the similarities are chilling.

I can’t tell if they’re both the same person. It almost feels to me like the second one is more of a writing exercise than the genuine article (repeating every single talking point that was previously brought up overemphasising “I know about all these topics and can add to them”), but that sadly could be as much of a confirmation as a refutation.

My commiserations.

exciting! will it actually happen? or will it just be another glossy report? tune in tomorrow!

Now I get to find out if anyone is interested in #Boston to learn about how to use #inkscape to design their homes/physical spaces.

My workshop at the Boston Resource Center just dropped. I'm nervous how a non-physical skill will be received by the community. Will anyone attend? I'll have to find out...

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth !

Feb 19:

Q: Why is so much Black music about violence and misogyny? I'm not racist, but is Black culture just more violent?

A: Racism. Rap, trap, and drill, are only the most popular genres of Black music listened to *by white people.*

If like me, you can't see at all, there's no reason to have your 14 Pro or later pro-model iPhone's always on display turned on, and you might even be able to gain some battery life by turning it off. Just go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always on display, and toggle the "Always on display" switch off. #TipTuesday applevis.com/podcasts/how-disa…

Fellow comrades in #academia - there’s a very cool project launching called Science Homecoming, that allows you to find local papers from your hometown and encourages you to pitch them an opinion piece about the current attacks on #science and #highered.

I pitched a piece to my hometown paper and they got back to me in about 10 minutes saying they definitely wanted to see it. So think this is a simple thing to do with high impact potential

Typically Linux distros have a live system to run an installer that installs a second system. What if instead, we booted from the ISO into the installed system and saved it to disk in the background while already using the system. I call it prêt-à-booter image, and I have made a demo for GNOME OS.

Yo!

I have been building a universal fedi client called #DhaagaApp

It supports all 3 biggest decentralized protocols (#mastoapi, #bluesky and #misskey)

It has pretty timelines, unique client-side features and a modern, aesthetic design.

It's available on Play Store and #IzzyonDroid

Do have a look, and share with your friends if you like it. ^^

I also post frequent devlogs and am always excited to receive feedback.

Hello all. As many of you know, I've been writing BLOOD IN THE MACHINE: The Newsletter for months, but I've been on the fence about going all-in. Recent events have made the call easier.

Elon Musk, the Silicon Valley oligarchs and their AI are taking over. I want to do all I can to push back. I hope you'll join me, and I'm asking for your support.
