Apps on Flathub need to ship with more hardened permissions out of the box. No full access to / or ~ where you'd only need the downloads folder. Don't approve apps that ask for more than they actually need.
you already get the choices presented to you in a fairly straightforward manner if you install flatseal but even then you have to go out of your way to change the settings from the typically insane defaults

@violetstone @soop Flatpak and GNOME do rely on runtime permissions in the form of Portals, similar to the permissions model on iOS and Android. There are a number of static permissions that had to exist to transition from an entirely unsandboxed model to a permissions model where we actually provide an API and user control over what apps can do.

I have a flash drive on my keyring (the one holding the house key), with a LUKS encrypted file system on it, to be mounted using the loopback device. The password is also on it but GPG encrypted, and my GPG keyring is not on this flash drive. The flash drive was reformatted so it contains an EXT4 file system, so someone plugging it in might not even be able to get started. Would that be illegal? I use it as an "in case the house burns down" backup.
I wish I could say I'm surprised. About 5 years ago, I'd be in shock. Not anymore, our country's going to hell, and we're taking the long long painful way and it sucks. In about 6 months from Jan of this year to now, nothing feels certain or safe anymore. So this sadly does not surprise me

All the countless hours spent on the #Linux Desktop Migration Tool are finally paying off! My wife got a new laptop yesterday. I installed #Fedora #Silverblue on it, created a user account, connected it to the home network, and left the migration tool running overnight. She could start using the new laptop without any interruption in the morning, and the whole thing took like 15 minutes of my time.
@garrett at the moment it only supports direct migration. Doing a "backup" is something I'm considering, but I would have to completely rework the script because it's run on the destination machine, not the origin. Now the only workaround is having a 3rd machine (e.g. a VM), migrate the data and settungs there and then migrate them from there to the new installation.
Just out of curiosity I tried vibecoding a GUI app (written in Python, GTK and libadwaita) based on the migration script in Cursor. It really rewrote every feature, created a desktop file, AppStream metadata, icon, flatpak manifest... I started getting an existential crisis... and then it tried to build and run it and was running into dependency issues and cutting features until it got down to a simple demo window that finally worked. 🙂
@electricCZ it would look nice as a desktop app, wouldn't it? But I don't have time for it and I'm not definitely gonna vibecode it. It would be unmaintainable bloatware. I asked it to optimize the ssh connections in the script and it added 120 new lines. I asked it to come up with a more intuitive directory selection and it added 600 lines (the current one isn't ideal, but it's only 40 lines of code).
How did you manage the migration of GNOME config files? My usual experience with DEs is that it's impossible to migrate all configurations and settings that I "clicked" in the GUI.
Yeah, and that's the problem. I literally lose my mind creating DEs and basically all GUI software solutions for Linux by breaking the Unix philosophy and, by small steps, leading towards a mainstream Microsoft-like solution.
I still can't understand why DEs don't have a centralized directory to store all configurations, which can be transferred to another computer, and settings for the whole workspace are just done.
@VildaVedo yeah, it requires a lot of cherry picking of settings, not great, but it's doable. For example after the migration I can open Evolution and start where I stopped at the previous machine, but in order to do that, I have to reinstall Evo, move the app data, migrate dconf settings, migrate the NSS database (for certificates), migrate GOA configs (for online accounts), migrate the keyring (for secrets), migrate GPG keys. And if you do all this, you get the wow moment when you open Evo on the new machine and it's the same and ready to use.
@paoloredaelli it's sort of leftover from assumptions at the very beginning of the project. It thought it'd be good to have the prerequisity to avoid any potential breakages. But I don't think it's necessary and it's actually something I can handle in the script. I'll add it to my todo list to get rid of it.
Not sure we should block on all the @flathub requirements listed here, but I agree the current Fedora Flatpak model is hurting Fedora Workstation more than helping.

When speaking to an audience he struggles with time, going into terror induced tunnel vision. His idea: put an LED bar graph on top of his laptop screen where he CANNOT fail to see it.
Donald is a laser whiz and had already lasercut a bargraph holder that slots onto his laptop screen. With an ESP32 development board from the Wall o' Parts™️, and a knob/screen combo board he sourced from The Usual, we knocked up a micropython program which lets him set the talk duration hand have a progress display that has 50 LED pixels, that shade green, orange, yellow red as his speaking slot elapses.

Over the past 30 years, massive amounts of money have been taken out of the system - dividends, share buyback, insane bonuses, and more - money that could have gone to investment in infrastructure, repairing and replacing systems that were almost a century old when privatisation happened. Instead of papering over the cracks and hoping for the best (while paying obscene bonuses to the upper levels for saving money), that money should have been used to upgrade and replace everything in a system that was designed for 15 million people but now has to deal with 70 million. Yes, replacements and upgrades have been done - but just replacing what was already there at the time of privatisation is still 100 years away from completion. So, I say that, given that they have removed so much money from the system while allowing services to stagnate, and that "emergency" sewage releases are an hourly occupancy rather than once in a blue moon, and that 1/3rd of water that leaves the reservoir doesn't reach the tap (and apparently a similar per centage is lost on the return trip), re-nationalisationbis the only real choice. With no compensation. Take Thames first, as that apparently can't cope with the twin demands of providing a service to consumers and providing a payout to its owners (so the service takes a back seat) without going bankrupt, then do the rest one at a time. If any company can turn themselves around, they can stay. For now. But if we have to bail out privately owned companies, then they become public property. No more privatised profits and socialised losses. Same goes for any other industries - banks, rail, buses, power, airlines, mail... You don't get the profits if you don't provide the service. So get out of the way.

AI Voices need to improve significantly for me to buy audiobooks that use them. Right now, all the AI voices are just... so soulless and devoid of the humanity... and I don't know if AI could ever even come close to a human narrator.
