Does anyone have experience with any of the recent RP2040 or RP2350-based boards that have DVI/HDMI output, a USB host port or ports, SD card slot, and audio? These boards are often used to run retro computer emulators. I'm particularly interested in the quality of the audio output, and whether anyone has been able to use that feature from Rust. Yes, I'm itching to do an embedded Rust project on bare metal. Even Linux is too complex for my tastes these days. I think the growing complexity of modern software, as epitomized by the generative AI craze, is making me want to run the other way.
Damn, the most promising-looking board (adafruit.com/product/6200) is out of stock. The Olimex RP2350pc (olimex.com/Products/RaspberryP…) is in stock, but it mentions PWM stereo audio generation, and my first Raspberry Pi project over 10 years ago taught me to hate the original Pi's PWM-based audio. Though that page _also_ mentions an audio codec, so I don't know if the PWM audio is all there is or just one of two options.

The RP2350pc appears to use the ES811 audio chip (everest-semi.com/pdf/ES8311%20…). The output of that chip feeds the headphone jack directly, while the speaker outputs go through a PAM8003DR (diodes.com/assets/Datasheets/P…) amplifier chip. That's a Class-D amplifier which is probably what they mean by PWM audio. Seems decent from the spec sheets, but I have no idea how it sounds in person.
@alexm I'm slightly more interested in audio out through HDMI, which means it's dependent on the DAC in your TV or monitor, and do have that working at a low level (see github.com/DusterTheFirst/pico…). But most of these kinds of boards have a pretty high quality DAC.
This is all hobby/weekend stuff for me, but I'm hoping to have a little more time as I wrap up the current transition.
When the "audio" feature is set, output a 60Hz triangle wave as HDMI data islands.

I made the Neotron Pico, which is VGA and microATX. I think the audio is fine (sounded OK playing a ProTracker file to the audience at RustConf last year) and you can buy one at Elecrow. TLV320AIC23 codec with PIO I2S. All in Rust.
@neotron I don't think the Pico 3B is as stupid an idea as you said in the README. It would allow programmers of varying skill levels to play with an embedded Rust software stack that can be customized and optimized from top to bottom, on a computer in a familiar SBC form factor with lots of connections for different kinds of applications. I'd be willing to help fund the prototyping of the board. I don't have the skills to make it myself.
@teotwaki Yes, if you're outputting digital audio it goes to the display. To me, this seems more authentic to the original console, and also potentially lets the microcontroller board be smaller and cheaper (as is the Waveshare board; see github.com/DusterTheFirst/pico…). But it's a tradeoff and in some cases having a headphone jack on the microcontroller board is better.
Sure, then both the Fruit Jam (hopefully widely available soon) and the Olimex board should work great.
Also note, I think the Olimex board DAC is mono, even though it has a stereo headphone jack.
I'm not sure if there's existing Rust code to drive the audio, but it should be fairly simple, my understanding it it's basic SPI. The rp-rs Matrix is probably the best place to ask.

Adding and changing a share target is much easier there and with a bit of clever design it would work with any reachable page or resource, not just those web pages where the authors thought of adding share buttons
