I submitted the manuscript for my next book!
It's a collection of folktales about misunderstood / underappreciated animals. Bats, sharks, wolves, rats, spiders, etc. I managed to find cool stories for each, and in every one of them the animal is portrayed in a positive light.
It was one heck of a research project, and I really enjoyed it 😄
One of the authors I follow, @clacksee, has made two of her #books free for today.
For some light-hearted #SciFi with plenty of hope, there's The Left Hand of Dog: whitehartfiction.co.uk/product…
If you'd rather read about old ladies getting justice by any means necessary, there's A Bit of Murder Between Friends: whitehartfiction.co.uk/product…
I can highly recommend both.
EU readers should use her Payhip shop: payhip.whitehartfiction.co.uk
White Hart Fiction
Author of sci-fi without the pew-pewSi (she/her) is a Canadian misanthrope who lives in London. She shares her home with her partner and an assortment of waifs and strays.White Hart Fiction
Where do folks go to get DRM-free epub books when they're trying to avoid Amazon and Barnes & Noble?
I use bookshop.org and thriftbooks.com for my hard copies of things, but I LOVE my eBooks too.
Right now the only advantage to Amazon is that I can legally break the DRM, so the book is truly mine once I purchase it (I won't buy eBooks I can't unlock). But I'd really like to find alternate sources of DRM-free books. Ideas?
It's #FediBookFair weekend! All weekend, authors will be posting about books and related topics. Follow the hashtag to find new authors to follow, and books to read or buy as Christmas presents.
If this doesn't sound like fun, filter the hashtag. But if it does, please boost so that more people can join us.
We will boost as many posts as we can, and we encourage others to do the same.
This piece on reading the Baby-Sitters Club books as a middle-aged man is pretty decent.
theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
I’m a similar age to the author, so as I read it I absolutely recognised that feeling of repulsion I’d have as a kid at the very notion of accessing any ‘girl’ content. Wonder-Woman, She-Ra, Supergirl, ‘girly’ pop music, books about girl things; I’d actively have nothing to do with them.
I don’t think I’m unusual in that. Perhaps these days, but not then.
As a middle-aged man, I would’ve saved loads on therapy if I’d read Baby-Sitters Club books as a kid
Boys weren’t exposed to emotionally intelligent characters in the books marketed to us. I won’t let my son be a victim of the same social tabooRussell Marks (The Guardian)
Looks like my next read. THe attached audiobook sample contains ... a lot of swearing.
"What would happen if you crossed the high fantasy of Wheel of Time with the irreverent comedy of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?"
Meet Your Maker is a comedic, epic fantasy series that asks the questions: What is fiction? What is reality? And does it make a difference, when everyone and everything is trying to kill you?
Bruce created this world. Now he has to survive it.

#TIL that in 1929, JM Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, gifted his work's copyright to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
"Through this gift, Peter Pan’s magic made an unprecedented leap from the realm of fiction into reality and the hospital began to receive royalties every time a production of the play was on, as well as from the sale of Peter Pan books and other products."

Plus: if you buy the Hobbit, you can get the audiobook by Andy Serkis for only $4.58. I loved his narration, it's amazing.
Can I have some fleeting passions with a somewhat changeable base of continuity? Please, and thank you... 😂

I've read 51 books so far in 2023. That's fewer than last year, but still about a book a week: reading.chatterjee.net/
Some of my favorite reading memories this year include book festivals in Kolkata and Berkeley, exploring new-to-me indie bookstores (Champaca, Borderlands, and Perelandra), writing gushing reader fan mail, and so many long walks powered by audiobooks.
Of of the books I read this year, here are the ones that will stick with me…

Looking to solve a mystery. One of my recent used bookstore finds is a signed 1st Edition of #MaySarton’s A Work of Light. The book includes the note pictured below. I realize it’s a (very) long shot, but might someone identify the author or the recipient of the note?
Please boost for broader circulation.

If you're looking for samples of #audiobooks narrated by AI, search for the term "Narrated by Apple Books" in the Apple Books app. It will pull up a list of books converted to Audio by #Apple.
Here are a few samples:

I have mixed feelings about this.
Apple quietly launches a catalog of #books narrated by #AI on its Books app, in a move that publishers, authors, and agents warn may upend the #audiobook market.

Here's a good piece that lays out some advantages to #AI narrated #audiobooks. The trouble is that there is no analysis of what happens when an author or publisher decides to forego hiring a human and go directly to this method.
Why AI audiobook narrators could win over some authors and readers, despite the vocal bumps

Why AI audiobook narrators could win over some authors and readers, despite the vocal bumps
Apple and Google’s AI turn in a booming market may sound less than human and raise the ire of voiceover actors, but it has cost benefitsLois Beckett (The Guardian)
I really enjoy listening to audiobooks and appreciate the emotion and nuance that skilled narrators bring to the story. So I have my (considerable) doubts that AI-voiced audiobooks will be just as good. Hope this doesn’t become the norm. #Bookstodon #BookToot #AudioBooks #AI

I just read, in an anthology of Russian 19th-century Gothic Tales (kirja.casa/book/70999/s/russia…) a story by Vladimir Odoyevsky, called The City Without a Name.
I can't find an english translation of the story online, but if you find it somewhere, read it! Written in 1839, it's a very accurate description of our own times almost 200 years later when profit motive drives everything and every humane pursuit is driven into nonexistence in the name of endless gain.
I'm still being haunted by this Barnes & Noble article and everyone praising the new policy changes so I just wanted to share another piece about it
This one is about the authors. because no one loves books and readers more than authors. especially not the CEO of Barnes & Noble.
