Servers see messages with random sender and recipient addresses, but those can not be mapped to a phone number or public handle. Servers see IP addresses. But you can use Tor, or a VPN, if you want to hide that.

ME! so it is basically Delta Chat with some tweaks to my taste, I shared it and it turns out some other people seem to like it, according to the #GooglePlay downloads it is mainly used in #Russia, #Cuba, #USA, #Iran, #Germany and #India
I don't actively try to convince people to use it, and in general it is better to push for DC that is multi-platform, then in #android some might prefer AC as their DC client
@opensourceopenmind similarly, I got my family and friends to talk to me via #DeltaChat because I simply don't have #WhatsApp, #Telegram etc. in my phone, I never try to convince them talking about encryption or open source, I simply say "I don't use that apps, you can reach me in this one" and then it is about a practical problem and not ideological one, I don't go saying "you should uninstall whatsapp now" but they are more willing to respect/understand your own ideological decisions

several people reporting lately that #deltachat has become their main app: They are now spending more time in the chats, also with web apps, than in any other app. It may be a turn to more private communications when social media has become more toxic, obnoxious and dangerous in many places?
#deltachat and #chatmail.is indeed about being readily available when other forms of communications become unavailable or dangerous like in Iran or Russia but also in western and other countries.
I'm puzzled, the #DeltaChat Android app (from the Google play store, 2.34.0) doesn't offer to set a video chat instance
The version 2.11.0 from the FDroid store does. Is this intentional?
The first one is set to English, the FDroid one to German
Side problem: while the web version of #FDroid also shows me 2.34.0 the "app store" on #EOS always downloads 2.11.0. It even offers an update but the version stays on 2.11
We'd be surprised if you find a "0day" exploit against standard #deltachat users but certainly prefer you finding something than eg putin/khomeini-aligned hackers.

what I don't get is why you take this opportunity to attack #pgp in general, like taking the opportunity to push for some agenda, the site is called gpg.fail, GPG not PGP, most of the problems are related to gpg or some C code implementation bug, or using gpg and others in the command line and getting tricked by some ansi printing in the terminal, how that translates to "let's kill pgp"? ex. none of the listed problems affect #DeltaChat at all
@wmd there are many computer people pretty happy with #deltachat ... who value precisely that they can use it with their families and friends easily, though.
With a lot of alternative software, the complaint is that it is only usable by specialists. We are pretty happy that in our case it is more the specialists who need to work harder and read the FAQ to understand that some lines of traditional thinking about eg email and pgp do not apply delta.chat/en/help

@jan once details are published, and #39c3 is over, well take another look. But note that #deltachat's usage of #openpgp is intentionally minimal. #Gpgfail is a lot about failures of signature verification, and parsing problems in the gpg c-implementation but #deltachat doesn't use these mechanisms or code at all. The @rpgp folks are still studying the details, and there might be issues, so maybe also follow them for more details. Again, this doesn't affect deltachat as things stand.

(for future readers: this table is wrong, #DeltaChat doesn't require phone numbers or #email for registration can be used anonymously without providing any data at all, for #telegram encryption is not supported in groups at all, only in 1-to-1 chats using the "secrets chat" which don't even sync across devices so is highly impractical and not much used by people in the end)
I want to pick one to invest my time in fully setting up. I've tried SimpleX and it's okay but I see DeltaChat is active on Fedi and maybe has more momentum?

my humble opinion: I would still pick #deltachat / chatmail core to build my client if I had to start from scratch today, with #xmpp I just have a protocol, with delta chat I don't actually need to use the #email protocol at all, only the core library that takes care of dealing with networking and #encryption while all I have to do is to create the UI
The big plus of #DeltaChat is that the infrastructure is already there. Infrastructure is a big part of the problem. And obviously using mail for that is only for people born before 2000.
Second is branding: When people hear #XMPP they hear 20 years of failure of implementing robust solutions both server-side and client-side. People just don't know that after 20 years there now are server and client solutions really working.
I have a lot of respect for #DeltaChat (@delta); By all accounts they provide a good looking client and a homogenize experience across platforms. Users absolutely don’t need to care about the underlying protocol!
However there is no way, shape or form in that IMAP+Submission is a more suitable stack for instant messaging than #XMPP.
