Cafe Zoetrope, San Francisco

"Many other musicians and musical groups were allowed to utilize this studio, including the Grateful Dead."

"Francis Ford Coppola bought the building in 1972 to be the headquarters for his production company, American Zoetrope. A number of his films including the Godfather II and III, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, One From The Heart, The Outsiders, and Dracula were written, edited, or sound mixed within these walls."

Ethical photography means that I respect wildlife and apply these principles:

- I do not bait, call, feed, trap, manipulate or harass wildlife.
- I avoid disturbing their routine.
- I don't destroy their environment to ''get a better photo''.
- I keep a respectful and safe distance.
- I don't overstay.
- I arrive quietly and leave quietly.
- If I feel that an animal is stressed by my presence, I leave immediately.
- I study the animal at home to understand their behaviour & life.

Your daily bear photo, courtesy of yours truly.

Context for new followers: I took this photo in September during the salmon run on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This bear was keeping an eye on salmon going up a stream, hoping to catch a few of them. As you can judge from its body shape, it is very successful. 😁

Note that I do not approach bears, I use a telephoto lens. I practice ethical photography.

A year of sunrises - 13 pictures of the sun, each month, same place, same time.

"One of the best places in Edmonton to see the sunrise point change along a familiar horizon is Valleyview Drive, which is where I photographed sunrise once a month for a year. This image is the final result of stacking 13 sunrise images from Dec 2020 to Dec 2021, to visually depict the change in the sunrise point over a year." - Photographer, Luca Vanzella.

Stacks of boomboxes, radios, cameras, and other vintage tech at an electronics shop on Canal Street. I’m not a tech-head, but I still felt a huge rush of nostalgia walking in to get my stereo fixed. A younger customer wondered what the rectangular slot under a TV screen was for, and asked “What’s VHS?” The proprietor and I looked at each other and laughed, and felt old together.

I have a question for photographers today, more for digital than film.

How do you feel about camera technology over the past decade? It feels to me they're making cameras better and better for video, but are they advancing features for still photography at the same rate?

What new developments in camera tech have been your favourite when it comes to still photography?

I'll be talking about the replies on an upcoming video!

Golden aspens blanket the trail at Fish Lake, Utah, in a beautiful autumn display. More than beautiful—it's part of Pando, the largest living organism on Earth. Over 100 acres, sharing one vast root system, a living wonder of nature. Walking here feels like stepping through living history, every leaf connected to a single ancient being.

Walking back from a gig tonight, I noticed lots of people in Castle Street taking pictures. So I turned around to see what they were photographing.

And this is what I saw.

Při první návštěvě jsem si myslel, že autor expozice měl neomezený rozpočet a neomezený přísun omamných látek.

wanna give a huge shout-out to Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky for gifting us some absolutely stunning colour photographs from Russia in the 1910s.

YEAH YOU READ THAT RIGHT. he took three photographs of each subject, through coloured filters, and then projected the images again through the filters and superimposed them.

and thus, we have colour photography of early 20th century Russia. and it's beautiful.

Considering how GNOME Color Manager's support for calibrating scanners (and printers?) has been broken for many years, and how it seems like the remaining code might get ripped out entirely from GNOME Control Center as a result, I have filed a new #GNOME app idea, in the wild hope that someone might find this interesting enough to create a standalone utility app for creating ICC color profiles for your photo scanners and printers: gitlab.gnome.org/bertob/app-id…

Where I live in North East England, sunrise was at 04.26 and sunset will be at 21.47 = 17 hours, 21 minutes of official daylight. The forecast is sunshine and feeling pleasantly warm at 26°C – it could well be the perfect start to the season of summer.

This is Giant Fruit Bat, known as a “flying fox.” Their wingspan can extend to four feet.

Photographer Hardik Shelat captured the beautiful animal in a rare daytime appearance. It came out of its nocturnal slumber to cool off in the intense Indian heat.

Do you have any idea how many times I had to throw this fucking stuffed bear into the air, swing my camera up to my eye, and try to take the perfect picture of it as it fell?

THIRTY fucking times.

Photography is hard, people.

This past week, 99 years ago, Miles Dewey Davis III was born in Alton, Illinois.

On November 12, 1989, on 60 Minutes, Harry Reasoner asked him if Black musicians were better at jazz and blues because of slavery. The question could’ve gone sideways.

What Davis said—quietly, precisely—was about rhythm, memory, race, and the meaning of swing. #music #Jazz #Histodons #history #blackmastodon #photography #blackandwhite

If any of you nature photographers ever capture images of insects with badly damaged wings, email them to Andrew Mountcastle at Bates College. He studies how insects crash into things and has made a public request (on Bluesky) for pics. He wants them for presentations and promises to add credits. Email via link. #insects #wings #photography #macrophotography #biomechanics

Released last Friday, a digital reconstruction of the Titanic chronicles a never-before-seen view of the wreck that is “accurate to the rivet,” a statement says.
