Computers used to be so easy. The screen would give you a menu of options; you picked one using the keyboard. But then graphical interfaces came along and made things more complicated, especially for screen reader users.

What if any modern e-commerce website could be accessed using a simple menu interface? This is the dream of researcher David Cane.

For my latest story, I got to correspond with a Ukranian developer with cerebral palsy who uses ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot to communicate and code. It was wild, because I don't think our interaction would have been possible just a few years ago.

Beyond that, though, #GenerativeAI is removing barriers for him to code and contribute. He even released his first #OpenSource project recently sharing his experience!

@Piciok Those are great questions! When I boosted Bellingcats’s post, I assumed the goal was to improve #a11y for disabled users. That’s the most common meaning of accessibility in software development. But they mean accessibility for less technical people.

Many folks seemed to like my demonstration of the mod for the #gothic #game by #piranchaBytes that allows #blind players to play! So now we have a little follow-up, maybe not something as exciting as the previous time, but no less important. The Smart Map feature allows the blind player to observe the 3D game surrounding in a 2D environment. Since the world of Gothic is pretty complicated with all kinds of polygons living inside it, we needed to make the map a bit simpler but no less functional. And so the Smart Map feature was born; it cuts the world to little squares, 500 X 500 in size, which can be navigated by the player allowing them to see what is going on in nearby sectors. Since Gothic uses the so called Waynet which is used for NPCs to know where we're going, we have a seemingly free pathfinding as well which, thanks to the limitations of #ZenGin is not as simple as I initially thought. Spread the word about YAGA! Thanks the great modders who contributedt his feature. #gaming #accessibility #a11y #gothic #rpg

I updated to Firefox 111, where it told me it could edit PDFs.

I grabbed a tagged PDF, opened it in Firefox, added a text note & sketch, then saved.

I opened that saved PDF in Acrobat Pro and all tags were gone.

Is anyone else using Dragon #SpeechRecognition? I would love to be buddies. This software takes a lot of wrangling!

I know about the KnowBrainer forum but I find their attitude kind of victim-blamey.

Please boost and feel free to add relevant hashtags. #accessibility #a11y #disability

I know some Microsoft #a11y folks follow me here: the Accessibility Assistant for Word is all well and good, but the absolutely wretched Style mechanics and Word->accessible PDF workflows have been borked for years and are directly responsible for generating enormous quantities of inaccessible content. Detecting contrast errors comes absolutely nowhere close to covering the waterfront. And I wish journalists covering this stuff would be more skeptical. theverge.com/2023/3/9/23632562…

📝 New post! "The Web Needs a Native .visually-hidden"

The .visually-hidden/.sr-only copypasta is incredibly useful for #a11y… but I don't think it should be a copypasta any more. The web would benefit a lot from it being a web standard.
