If they want to fork #Owncast, they legally can, but they should not call it Owncast anymore. I know #Mastodon & #WordPress are open source as well, but they vigorously protect their trademarks to prevent this type of confusion.
If possible, I would encourage them to rename their fork something else. If they refuse, let us know which company it is so we can avoid doing business with them.

For those who don't know, OwnCast is a Twitch-style livestreaming and chat service for the Fediverse. You can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc and you will see a post in your timeline when the account goes live. There's a site about it at https://owncast.online and a directory of featured streams at https://directory.owncast.online

Also, remember that you can set up Owncast on a VPS with the following Site.js command:
site enable --owncast
That’s it.
It’ll be up and running with automatic TSL certificates and everything. You just need to sign into the admin, change your password/stream key and maybe take a few moments to customise your site info :)

It currently runs a loop of videos by people who self-host their livestreams using OwnCast, along with short videos promoting other libre projects.
If you run a free open project and have a short video (under 1 minute), you can have it added to this loop by contacting @owncast.
OwnCast servers include Fediverse compatibility, so you can follow them from Mastodon etc. When a stream you follow goes live, you'll see a message telling you about it in your timeline.

If you follow an OwnCast account from Mastodon, you will see a post from them in your timeline telling you when the account has gone live.
