Reading the paper that started it all after so many years is a quite interesting experience. 25 years ago they knew *exactly* what a search engine may have become if it chose the path of an ads-based business model. They were very aware of the conflict of interest that arises when you have to provide relevant results to the users, but also boost those that pay your bills.
In other words, were warning us about the risks of the business model that their own company eventually decided to embrace.
Since you seem to be getting excited about the redesigned calendar in #Thunderbird Supernova, it's an appropriate time to mention that the ENTIRE application is getting a modern UI overhaul in 2023!
hopefully with the new redesign, comes new accessibility and a better caching strategy. For example, at least on linux, orca and any assistive technology product totally freezes till the huge amount of thunderbird items gets transfered in bulk over dbus, all at once. A good enough solution would be for that call to return items in a pagination stile, keeping track of the current level inside thunderbird itself. A very good implementation of this is done by firefox, the lag is most of the time from the page itself, not the cashing implementation. Also, any webview as in from the rss reader or google gmail sign in in non-trivial cases is totally inaccessible, nvda on windows says unknown and orca doesn't even read it, perhaps that part can be improved as well if you're at it. Thunderbird is an awesome email client, those accessibility fixes can make it even more awesome, so I hope something can be done about it.
Looks nice! But please do not copy the Outlook UX as pictured here (developer.thunderbird.net/plan…) and keep the traditional message list up and reading area down approach as an option.
This might just make me go back to using Thunderbird again (after more than 10 years)! Microsoft's plan(s) for Outlook on desktop seems confusing at the moment.
You do intend to keep multiple inboxes in one view, without having to toggle the entire app context between accounts, yes? Because having to switch app context between my 7 different accounts would be a straight-up nightmare.
The multi-line view is a nice addition and will be welcomed by many.
@thunderbird Personally, I hope and expect the classic "sortable table" view and the quick filter *toolbar* (which allows you to toggle between searching in the sender's address, subject, body ...) will remain available?

Firefox is trialing consent dialogue handling community.mozilla.org/en/campa… Says will auto-click "Reject All" if that's an option, otherwise will click "Accept All". I think the second option - auto accepting everything, is EXTREMELY problematic. I get that we're all annoyed, but first Brave and now Firefox taking the lets bury our head in the sand approach is unfortunate. Its not solving the actual problem at all!
Are they nuts? I get the first half. But there are better ways for the second. Either it's an option the user can define, or it has to go at all: I e.g. often use uBO's "element zapper" on those overlays. Works in 95% of the cases: banner gone, no consent given, page works as expected. So what uBO as an addon can accomplish, Mozilla can't? Come on.
@IzzyOnDroid I agree. Brave too uses the same block-lists to remove the dialogue elements. Though note that even hiding or removing is not a good long term solution - because you will never know what that 'consent' was, and more importantly - if there were "legitimate interest" misuses. For short term, yes its convenient and better for most people.
A good long-term solution would be getting rid of that crap altogether, yes. But meanwhile I got confirmation that just removing the banner does not count as having agreed. Luckily one must provide informed and explicit consent, and tick the check-boxes for that (pre-ticked is not valid). So removing the entire banner should be the same as "no to all" – even if it's just because you didn't click "yes" 😉
@IzzyOnDroid Except when using legitimate interests - which require you to take action to disable / opt-out / object. So hiding the banner will only avoid the ones where consent (or opt-in) is required, and you will lose the ability to inspect or control the opt-outs or legitimate interests. And there is rampant abuse of misusing these legitimate interests in the wrong manner, which is why hiding the dialogues should work in theory, but isn't enough.
I agree it's kind of a gray area. But if I didn't submit the form, those pre-checked fields have no legal powers. What if due to some browser quirk (or network issue, as most of those content banners are hosted by 3rd parties) I didn't see the banner at all? If I visit a shop site and don't hit any order button, I didn't buy anything.
But as said, gray area. It's not a "final solution", but still better as the alternative (except for simply closing the browser tab of course).

@blindscribe Are you using TweeseCake? The actual link works fine, but that client's link detection is currently broken. If so, either remove the trailing word or copy/paste the correct URL instead.
@jscholes @blindscribe TweeseCake works with links, but you have to make sure the link isn't followed by text, or the client will interpret the next word after the link as the link itself. @app

@Natanox The reasons Tutanota give for not using PGP seem to make sense to me although I'm no expert on this. The pragmatic approach would be to use, for example, Tutanota for general use and PGP for communicating with people who know how to use it. So maybe set up a Proton mail account as well as a fall back. @Tutanota
@MurrayWindripper I know, and that's really a good thing. However PGP keys are an established standard in encrypted mail communication and given people already have pals and institutions that work with it it makes no sense not to support it at all.
@Natanox I would like to turn your question on its head. How does a PGP user share an encrypted e-mail with somebody who has limited technical knowledge and little understanding of encryption? Tutanota allows their users to send an e-mail to anyone and all they need to open it is a pre-shared password and a web browser. They can even reply to it without having a Tutanota account. @Tutanota
@MurrayWindripper @Natanox Thanks for your feedback. Yes, PGP is not the perfect solution, particularly as we also want to support Forward Secrecy. Nevertheless, we plan to add PGP support as an option for compatibility reasons in the future.

wystarczy, że ktoś z karabinu cię obserwuje i pojawisz się tam (a w zasadzie już pojawiłeś) po jakiejkolwiek aktywności, zatem warto pisać posty i komentować ;)
