My daughter asked me, "Have we ever seen a star being born?" Here's part of the answer.
Deep within interstellar cloud CB 130-3, a dense knot of gas and dust teeters on the edge of collapse. When it goes, it will become a new star.

"Have we ever seen a star being born?" Part 2: This is protostar L1527, 1/50,000th the age of the Sun. It's still pulling in gas & squirting out huge jets. The star itself is hidden behind a dusty disk (the line at the middle). Planets are forming there! webbtelescope.org/contents/new…

"It was my belief that as Mastodon adoption grew, the moderators of whichever instance you chose to use would have to deal ever-increasing volumes of abuse. It’d be like how email providers have to develop spam filters to combat incoming spam from every other provider (but so much still gets through).

After a month on #Mastodon, I’ve realized I was wrong."

Had a really fun conversation about Mastodon and the Fediverse today with folks at the #Oregon State University #OpenSource Lab, @osuosl.

If you don't know about them (or if you do!) please give them a follow. It's a great program for getting university students hands-on experience with key #FreeSoftware project infrastructure.

I’ve recently released gpu-io – a #webgl computing library for real-time physics simulations, particle/agent-based systems, cellular automata, image processing, and general purpose GPU computations.

Examples: apps.amandaghassaei.com/gpu-io…
GitHub: github.com/amandaghassaei/gpu-…

gpu-io makes it easy to build GPU-accelerated apps without worrying about low-level WebGL details and browser inconsistencies. Designed for WebGL2 with fallbacks for WebGL1. WebGPU support is planned! More in thread 🧵...

This is why you should clear your cache frequently. Privacy Browser does (by default) every time you run Clear and Exit.

in reply to Soren Stoutner

@futureisfoss By the way, in the next release Privacy Browser will also run Clear and Exit when the last tab is closed by the OS back button or gesture, which happens if the last tab does not have any back entries in the WebView history.

Hello people of the Fediverse! Some of you may have heard that a new Mastodon client, Ivory, is in development for iOS (and Mac!). This is true! Tapbots is going all in on Mastodon and we hope this place continues to grow and thrive. Tweetbot will continue to be developed alongside Ivory as a lot of code is shared. A new Mac version of Tweetbot and Ivory are also currently in development and we are working hard on getting those towards a public beta state.

Heads up for fans of the #Metatext #Mastodon app

- its lead developer @metabolist has stopped updating it, for health reasons.

If someone else would like to help out, please email them at info@metabolist.org

The last minutes are running out. Masstodon.Technology will shut down permanently any day now ashfurrow.com/blog/mastodon-te… 😢

No, I won't talk about fish here. But thank with all my heart our then admin and god-father, @ashfurrow, for having kept it up and running all those days of fond remembrance! I'll never foget those years.

Live long and prosper, Ash – you're now free of that burden and walk toward new horizons. (Made it out before that bird crashed in through the roof, lucky man! 🙊 🙈 💨)

Something I've started doing for my command-line tools is including a page in their online documentation that shows the --help output for all of their sub-commands

I mainly do this because having the help output displayed online somewhere makes it much easier to casually review for opportunities to improve it!

For sqlite-utils for example I realized that having example usage for each command is a really big usability improvement.

Here's that page: sqlite-utils.datasette.io/en/l…

40k users, 50k projects. We're providing service to so many, this was unbelievable four years ago when #Codeberg was founded.

Thank you for supporting our mission. Together we fight the monopoly of proprietary platforms, and work towards a future where websites are hosted by non-profit associations and federate with each other.

Pong is 50 years old today.

Little known fact: Pong has no code. Pong doesn't even have a microprocessor. Al Alcorn hardwired the game with transistor-to-transistor logic. (See Henry Lowood: ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/5…)

I was listening to the #BBC's #DigitalPlanet this morning & happy to get the tip of downloading & archiving your data from #Twitter.

You can see how to do it here help.twitter.com/en/managing-y…

You need to "Request an Archive" but it is worthwhile doing, especially if you have invested a lot in that legacy platform.

We're looking for a #c / #cpp or #rust #freelance developer! It's mostly about Linux namespaces, PAM modules, and patches in 3rd-party software. Low volume. Take a look, mail us, or spread the word!

Our @zbus Windows CI jobs fails 60-80% of the time (almost guaranteed on the first run) with an "Unable to open shared memory" error. Would anyone with some Windows dev xp happen to know or can take a look what happens?

I've noticed that typically it's the doc tests that fail.

We already have great feedback on the redesign of JoinPeertube.org!

1. the "GAFAM" in the title is now "Big Tech" : joinpeertube.org/en_US/

2. We need more diverse feedback on how to replace the (very tech oriented) word "instances", please join the discussion here ideas.joinpeertube.org/posts/1…

Thanks a lot! (and please boost 🥰 )

Some talks I've given on fediverse stuff over the years:

Social Solutions to Social Networking, about cool stuff you can do when you're not scaling a huge platform - videos.theconference.se/darius…

Trust is Not Harmful, about what we mean when we talk about trust and "trustless" on fediverse vs web3 - vimeo.com/354276253

Squishy Amoeba-Like Objects, about topology of federated communities - youtube.com/watch?v=qxBu5Tktm1…

The first video is probably the most "intro for a general audience" of the three.

✊🏽 "We need to stop trying to turn private companies into something they’re not, and start building a new moral, institutional and legal order to express the values, rights and standards that we hold into the digital realm. It’s not about whether Zuckerberg is good or bad, vampire or human. It’s about getting to a place where we don’t have to care."
