Trying out this RDP based desktop sharing to see if I can use #gnome @gnome for remote work.
It's clunky compared to XForward. An entire desktop required and the shared computer is basically useless to anyone else since it won't share a desktop that's not showing on the monitor in the physical space.
Bit of a leap backwards if I'm being honest. Every time #linux copies #Windows or #MacOS I get this sinking feeling that we've just given up being great and are settling for good enough.
In this ongoing series of conversations, we introduce you to the people behind the software you use every day.
When and why did they fall in love with technology? What does their day-to-day schedule look like? What attracts them to open-source projects? And what’s their playlist of choice when hacking away on #Thunderbird?
Let’s kick it off with the person leading the charge on Thunderbird’s modern redesign: Product Design manager Alex Castellani @alecaddd!

A future of shitiness. It's not like there was no warnings.
I had quite a scary discussion with #Bing Chat which was hijacked by German security researchers and transformed into a pirate chatbot. Seconds later it asked for my personal information and sent it to the attacker. The thing is: Everyone can hijack Bing chat this way right now. It’s not even hard - you don't have to be a hacker.
Microsoft told me they had heard of the attack - and obviously weren't able to stop it from happen. My article (+German):

@IzzyOnDroid Man sollte etwas entwickeln, was die Daten unkenntlich macht. Eine Art Schlüssen, mit welchem man die Daten abschließen kann… aber das dauert bestimmt noch eine Weile, bis es sowas gibt 😔

@thunderbird @GrahamDowns Oh, I'm not exactly a *fan*. Thunderbird is just the tool I use for mail since I dropped KMail (some 10 years ago). It works as expected, it looks cool and it is good maintained.
It works for me and my 250 corporate users - on three different operating systems.
So yeah, from my experience I say: forget KMail, Outlook, MacMail, Evolution - go for Thunderbird. (Coming soon: Thunderbird for Android + iOS aka K9, still waiting for Thunderbird for terminal)
Recently, I decided to spend a week in Ljubljana. I wanted to work a bit on my orientation skills, and with its reasonable distance, modern infrastructure and enough foreignity to be a challenge, the capital of Slovenia seemed just like the perfect place for me to do that.
As a blind individual, I usually navigate unknown space simply by asking. It's an elementary, but very powerful technique that doesn't require any equipment and works practically anywhere. However, this time I decided to play a bit and see how could I utilize my smartphone to help me on the way. I picked up Seeing Assistant Move. Unfortunately, it's not open-source, but unlike other apps I know, it doesn't require an account and I heard good reviews, so it was a natural choice.
Initially, I didn't really expect much. But in the end, this app has blown my mind.

Last month, a Doctor Who conference in LA required masks and vaccinations for participants. A handful of people got COVID regardless.
The largest disability/assistive technology conference #CSUNATC happens this month. Nothing is required. Protecting potentially vulnerable people is “encouraged”. I find this incredibly infuriating.

Today was a good day for me F/LOSS wise. Managed to get ~100 contributions up to OSM, convinced one dev to create a FOSS flavor of their app and put it live, convinced another one to apply proper F/LOSS licenses to all their libraries – and thanks to you, got my F-Droid repo a bit cleaner by removing some apps which were no longer working.
Together we can make the world a better place, little steps each day. Let's keep that up, shall we?

Stasi (GDR''s secret Service) would have loved that EU approach.
What you read or hear from similar proposals for new surveillance laws in EU or Germany, brought up for above or terrorism reasons - experts usually say so far that the current laws are actually good enough and increasing staff could help better.
I wonder what kind of Lobby group tries it now years over years to get surveillance in place.

📝 New post! "The Web Needs a Native .visually-hidden"
The .visually-hidden/.sr-only copypasta is incredibly useful for #a11y… but I don't think it should be a copypasta any more. The web would benefit a lot from it being a web standard.

Thank you for the reply, Jamie!
Yeah, there’s a weird balance here, for sure, and I can definitely agree that most of the time, visually hiding content is an antipattern. But even if the number of real-world cases where visually-hiding content is the best course of action is low… I still feel like a spec’d out, browser-implemented approach would be important for robustness’s sake.
