But what if you show up at the hotel at 9pm and the hotelier can ask a credit bureau how much you can afford to pay for the room? What if they can find out that you’re in chemotherapy, so you don’t have the stamina to shop around for a cheaper room? What if they can tell that you have a 5AM flight and need to get to bed right now? What if they charge you more because they can see that your kids are exhausted and cranky and the hotel infers that you’ll pay more to get the kids tucked into bed? What if they charge you more because there’s a wildfire and there are plenty of other people who want the room?
We have been doing this for hundreds of years without big tech monitoring. We just invert the scheme and call it "discounts", and that somehow makes it more socially acceptable.
Student and retiree discounts aren't what they seem. They're just a really poor way to stereotype people and charge you more if the establishment believes you can bear it. You're a single mom with 3 kids who just had her house burned down? Well, you're neither a student nor a retiree, and they're allowed to know your situation, so no discount for you I guess.

If externals close bugs, we check changes before merging. We often do bug fix releases and fix the ones that are most severe and affect the most users first. Hope this makes sense to you. :)

Specifically, I want to see how that relationship might be different for cis and trans individuals, as well as for entities with non-human identities.

Fuck Microsoft. No wait, actually fuck all the execs at every big tech deciding to keep laying on the layoffs while taking larger and larger bonuses. Over 9000 people got layed off from their gaming division today, cancelling a number of projects. This also included the majority of people working on Forza, essentially putting the game on life support.
I got a bit emotional because it really sucks seeing this happen over and over, and in the case of Forza it's a game that means a lot to me personally because it's the first, and basically only racing game that's playable by blind gamers. It's the game I've logged by far the most time in recently, because it's a genre I always wanted to play and I had an interest in... And honestly, if it ever gets shut down and no one else decides to follow in their footsteps there's really nowhere else to go for this genre at least. Which really sucks. Well, there is F1 25 from EA, but it doesn't have a menu screen reader and the racing assists are less precise and not as complete.
Something else this is making me realise is a lot of the gaming accessibility successes we enjoyed recently have all broadly been considered a disappointment or involved in some controversies with the mainstream. The Last of Us 2's ending had people up in arms, the game also launched in the middle of a pandemic which didn't help, though I think it might be enjoying a bit more favor now. Mortal Kombat 1 seems to have largely disappointed WB games with Sales, which considering the game was designed to be a live service much like Forza actually is not good. We know plans for a second content expansion were cancelled and the game has basically had no updates since April, and knowing WB's CEO especially after the split they just had I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to lay on some layoffs of his own. Blizzard also experienced a lot of layoffs which affected the team working on Hearthstone which already resulted in 1 mode being completely removed, another frozen and the game pivoting even harder into microtransactions recently enjoying some controversy of its own involving a cosmetic pet item that can potentially cost over $100. All of these games were celebrated by the disabled gamer community but disliked in some way by everyone else, and could potentially shut down any minute. On that note earlier today I signed the stop killing games petition which would make preserving games like this much easier in the future, and if you're either in the UK or EU you should seriously do so as well.
Definitely having one of these moments where I think I should really start a blog... Then again the 3K character limit here is pretty good for these kind of emotionally charged posts.
Thank you for your words, in any case. It's such a depressing topic / moment in the industry. And to see accessibility efforts amongst teams and studio get squashed in the name of profitabilty is despicable.

@GoemonIshikawa Maybe. From what I heard a lot of the accessibility work was done by contract workers so many of them only worked on it for a few months and left very early on.

What happened to Hearthstone, involving one of the best communitymanager no longer got his contract renewed, makes me very sad. I have dedicated almost four Years into this Game, but since a few Months all the Microtransactions and now theese Layoffs are making me feel like its the Beginning of the end and I have nowhere to go with part of my Streams, loosing the Fun even in Battlegrounds, the last Mode I enjoyed lately. Does anyone think motorsport will be removed from steam? I am hopefully getting a laptop soon to play that, mortal kombat one, and the last of us games. Apple stores which devices/users install which apps. They have the device IDs. US government could obtain a list of people who installed the app if a court authorized it.

Well, I've noticed a new feature today - that is that yesterday I did notice it, but did have the idea there was some external reason - that while editing a document, if the computer goes in screen lock and possibly suspend, the next time opening the document which had been saved, but not closed, is no longer on the spot where I was editing, but on the top of the document.......
This is just utterly annoying! And obvously shouldn't happen, but the cursor still remain where it was!

@remixman @sclower I wonder what this means for minor releases of JAWS. Like in a situation where someone buys 2025, so their license would in theory then be valid until 2027, and then FS releases a small hotfix for 2027 after the date someone's SMA ended. In the previous model you'd still get that patch, but would it still be the case with this new system?

My kids sometimes play a game they made up called “Alexa”, where one of them says “Alexa, play [song]”, and the other one has to sing that song.
But occasionally one of them will say “Hey Siri, play [song]”, and the other will say “I’m sorry, I cannot complete that request right now”, and they will laugh and laugh and laugh…
Imagine the following situation: your company receives a ZIP file with an invoice, and you're the person responsible for checking if all the details are correct, before sending it off to the payment department. You open the archive, and there's a single PDF inside. You view it, and all the details match—your company's details, seller's company's details, items and total amount are what's expected, and even the bank account number is the same as on previous invoices from this company. As everything looks good, you forward the ZIP with the invoice to the payment team, and move onto reviewing other incoming invoices.
A few days later you receive the same invoice again, but you already have it in the system. Just in case you reach out to the payment department whether it's been paid, and they confirm it has—great, no action required.
Another month passes by, and you get a "payment due" reminder. What's this? You remember it being paid already, so what gives. You ask the payment team, they again confirm the invoice was settled. You phone the seller about this, but they say they received nothing. So you head down the hall to the payment department, you open the invoice on your laptop, and start going through the details with them. But what's this? The destination account number and amount in the wire transfer and the invoice don't match! The payment team manager's face gets a bit red—seems like it was their mistake? But no! They show you the invoice, and the amount and account number match the actual payment... but it doesn't match what you see on your screen! How can this be?
Both of you re-download the ZIP archive from the email you've forwarded and open the PDF inside. And there it is—you see two different invoices. What in the world is happening?
Immediately you report it up the chain, and your boss's boss gets a pair of IT forensics consultants on the job. They investigate, and later you learn that your company has been scammed with a pair of different invoices hidden inside a schizophrenic ZIP file. This means that you—on your work laptop running a certain software stack—saw and approved the correct invoice. But the payment team—running a different software stack—saw the fake invoice inside the ZIP, which they thought was what you had approved. Even later on you find out that the seller's company has been partially compromised and a lot of their customers got fake invoices. But that's water under the bridge at that point, and the money your company transferred is long gone.
Has this scam actually been pulled off? I guess it would require the scammer to know which software stack the approver is using and which one the payment department is using.
