Hidegen fújnak a szelek / Muzsikás (hongrois)
"Hidegen Fújnak a Szelek

@pluralistic I’m sorry, I’m all for holding giant corporations accountable and raising red flags when necessary, but this feels like unhelpful and inaccurate fear mongering.
9to5google.com/2025/06/25/gemi…
Gemini isn’t about to start “scanning your phone.” If you use a Google phone running Google’s OS with Google apps and the Google “AI” assistant, then starting today you can use that AI assistant without having to turn on “Apps Activity.” That’s all.
An email Google sent out to Gemini users is being misunderstood, and greatly misconstrued. Here is what’s actually happening.Abner Li (9to5Google)
It's a real good thing you mention non-google OS's instead of just suggestion how to enable things (and keep on using it)
Non-corporate services are the only future which favor ALL of us.
Adhere to CI=true environment variable to hide #curl's progress bar?

well, thanks - I had wondered at the name of that variable, knowing it existed but not why it was named generically. So I learned from this! Thanks for sharing.
+1 for not adding this suggested feature, prefer explicit behaviour
good decision. Using environment variables as a secondary api is always an abuse. It introduced an ambiguity about which takes priority: env or command line flags?
It is terrible for discoverability: I can see the flags that are set, but I would have to inspect every environment variable and then find a list of which ones curl is affected by.
This is the exact reason global variables are frowned upon in any context!
Also generic env names imply multi-tool agreement that is doomed.

1.Download curl.se using #curl built to use OpenSSL (that is over HTTPS in case Mastodon hides the scheme for you)
2. count number of allocations made with heaptrack
3. pause for gasping
4. double-check that curl only does 134 allocs itself, independently of the downloaded size
5. check the heaptrack number again

@JamminJerry It's all what you know and get used to - I'd likely struggle if I sat down with the Jaws cursor for the first time too :)
If you are interested in learning it, I would strongly recommend our Basic Training for NVDA which has a full section on object navigation and one on the review cursor: nvaccess.org/product-category/…
@JamminJerry Makes me wonder if the block is whether NVDA's object navigation IS complex, or.... do we just need to explain it better? Maybe we should start with explaining flattened object navigation? Not sure. I'd probably need to sit down with some practical examples and re-think it from scratch :)
Out of interest, have you read Basic Training for NVDA? Would be interested in your thoughts on how it is explained in there?
@JamminJerry it can be confusing. :)
NVDA's object navigation literally lets you move around each object on the screen. The problem is, that almost anything is an object. Like the focused object might literally be the OK button in a dialog box, so you can only really then get around the O and the K of the text, BEFORE COMING OUT OF THAT OBJECT to explore further.
How the objects all relate to each other, which are siblings, which parents, which children, is the thing to wrap your head around that really blows most people's minds.
Screen review can be a lifesaver here because in some cases, it replicates the JAWS cursor's ability to explore the screen regardless of the object hierarchy. So, like in that properties dialog box I mentioned earlier, it'd let you see everything on the screen: folder size, number of files, and so on.
NVDA, the free and open source Screen Reader for Microsoft Windows - nvaccess/nvdaGitHub
@cachondo Haha, I hadn't noticed that myself - probably not how I would have worded it, not sure who added that, but I should probably fix it.
I'm thinking..... "somewhat complicated"!
@menelion @zersiax @JamminJerry it's a misleading report to have screen and object review mode inasmuch as very few people seem to know what the object under the cursor contains.
In console windows, though, screen seems to be nothing and the object is where it's at. Literally.
Switch to object mode with NVDA plus page-up/down or NVDA plus numpad 1 or 7 and you'll find all your console output beautifully accessible.
@JamminJerry I think there's almost a case of perverse incentives here.
If you charge for the training material, there's an incentive not to provide free content that would replace it, even though such free content is necessary for the vast majority of NVDA users.
I posted "writing C for #curl" just a short while ago, which is relevant to the recent "C mistake" graphs.

It is a somewhat common question to me: how do we write C in curl to make it safe and secure for billions of installations? Some precautions we take and decisions we make. There is no silver bullet, just guidelines.daniel.haxx.se

David Suzuki says something I believe: it's too late to save the civilization we're used to, but not too late to save some of your neighbors for a while. Some quotes:
"Q: You’ve been quoted many times over the last couple decades saying it’s not too late to tackle climate change, so when did you come to this realization that the battle is lost?
A: It’s been coming all along.
We had previously said that the choice with climate change was mitigation and adaptation, and people began saying 20 years ago that we had to talk about adaptation. Other people said we can’t talk about adaptation because that acknowledges that climate change is real and impacting people. Well, we’re way past the time when we should have been thinking about adaptation.

For me, what we’ve got to do now is hunker down. The units of survival are going to be local communities, so I’m urging local communities to get together. Finland is offering a great example because the Finnish government has sent a letter to all of their citizens warning of future emergencies, whether they’re earthquakes, floods, droughts, or storms. They’re going to come and they’re going to be more urgent and prolonged.
Governments will not be able to respond on the scale or speed that is needed for these emergencies, so Finland is telling their citizens that they’re going to be at the front line of whatever hits and better be sure you’re ready to meet it. Find out who on your block can’t walk because you’re going to have to deal with that. Who has wheelchairs? Who has fire extinguishers? Where is the available water? Do you have batteries or generators?"
Read the whole thing, it explains more.

And she said "I'm not going to use your stupid app that none of my friends or people I like [celebrities, politicians, political commentators] are using"
I suspect this is the same feeling that most people have, which is why Meta has no shame about doing this. The users are a captured and captive audience, and they don't care because the utility they get out of the app is greater than whatever privacy threat this is.
