I need you to stop scrolling and read the most human piece of writing I've read in a very, very long time.

Thanks, @WeirdWriter.

Seriously people, if you're going to put work into making your blog look beautiful you HAVE GOT to see what it looks like with large minimum font size (not zoom). At my default 20pt minimum font size this blog gives me roughly 4 words per line.

I'm not going to read the damn article like this, no matter how good the words are. Yes, I can switch to "Reader View" but I shouldn't have to.

An earlier version of Trump's National Security Strategy specifically said that the US should try to break up the EU, to get Italy, Austria, Hungary and Poland to leave

From the Blinux list, my thoughts below the quote:

"Hello to all.

This is partly a (re)introduction and some good news (news for definitely not all, but some) of you.

This message is actually send to two lists, as I have no clue how big intersection of the member lists there are (I suppose huge, but not complete), so sorry for double receiving, you who are in both lists.

And now, with the disclaimers out of the way... I started to be interested in Linux, say ten or twelve years ago (don't remember exactly). Through a set of happy coincidences, I managed to get a job at Red Hat in the desktop team, and because accessibility was in the times of the reorg an important thing, a tools and accessibility team actually was created. It is quite a small team, and the majority of people on it do not have work time to do anything with accessibility (we're maintaining some of the Gnome apps, we do RHEL packaging, testing etc.).

However, I am working on the accessibility related things every day, so don't be afraid to ask something, mention your issues, and such.

Personally, in terms of distributions, I use GNome on Arch (personal laptop) and Fedora (work laptop), so I have the most experience with these setups, but I definitely used Mate, and tried Kde for some time as well.

And, that's it for now. "

So, a small team, that barely has time to do what the team is about. This is really sad. This is what people with disabilities get from one of the biggest Linux companies there is.

i've made 45 bilingual (eng/esp) copies of the Riot Medicine Field Guide, a concise companion book to the Hakan Geijer's robust protest medic text. i printed these specifically to distribute to action medics, though the content is informative for anyone and functions as a good hook for anyone interested learning more about street medicine.

if you would like one for yourself or as gift to someone ('tis the season!), please email me the address at <fallrise@riseup.net> and i will send one -- i am happy to cover the ~$4 shipping, but am willing to accept donations. if you have a medic crew and would like some for yourselves or for trainings, i can send you a box.

original texts can be found digitally at: riotmedicine.net/

wow, @pluralistic has really made a splash with #enshittification, very exciting to see. I hope people take a breath and try to understand the underlying challenges that makes confronting antidisintermediation so challenging, many of use have been engaged in this struggle for years. If it was easy, we would have smashed big tech ages ago, cc @ntnsndr, @techworkersco, @disco_coop

The latest round of tech working mobilization inspired by Cory's "enshitification" framing is amazing to see, tho I can't help bracing myself for the inevitable wasted energy as people rush forward without understanding counterantidisintermediation

#Carney ran on a build Canada platform that hasn't proposed any real nation building, rather we get pandering to foreign petro oligarchs.

Here's some nation building actions that should already be underway:
1. Get our govt data out of the USA. House it in the EU until we have a domestic datacentre.
2. Get schools across the nation off american software and networks. Like stop forcing my kid to use an enemy chromebook. This will take a large investment in infrastucture to update schools.
3. Retrofit schools, colleges and universities with renewable energy and batteries. Gift the installs and equipment to help reduce school electricity costs (and work toward climate action).
4. Similarly assist FN and especially Inuit communities getting off diesel generators. The soot is speeding melting in the Arctic.
5. Like the national railway that our ancestors built, build a national fleet of electric truck-trains (truck with 7-10 reefers). The railways are often plugged and reducing productivity.

My take on the the points you make about LLMs:

LLMs have the potential to turn content into a diff between what you already know and the current state of the world. The problem with making any kind of content is that no two readers are the same and have the same level of knowledge. This means that you'll always get some people who find parts of your content too hard to understand, not because they're stupid, but because they don't have the necessary prerequisites yet. You will also get some people who find parts of your content unnecessary, as they contain information they already know. Those two groups might overlap!

LLMs fundamentally change this paradigm. Because they're cheap enough to run to produce content aimed at a single reader, they can take into account what the reader already knows, what preliminaries the reader is missing, and what they're trying to get out of that content in the first place.

This requires combining the LLM with some kind of knowledge tracking system, which is hard for the usual privacy / "walled gardens" reasons, but I think we'll eventually get something like that for education at least.

"RemoveWindowsAI" is a script created by zoicware, available on GitHub, that does exactly what it says: it remove every AI feature in Windows 11. Do what you wish to do with this information. I'm sharing this because some folks are forced to use Win11 at work or other places for any reasons.

To make it clear, I don't agree with the under 16 ban of social media because:
1. It won't remove bullying from teens' lives
2. The age verification tech will actually be used to compromise identity and may actually be used *for bullying*
3. Teens will not learn how to engage with social media.
4. Alternatives to using social media are not "riding a bike" or "reading a book", but actually "talking to Chat GPT". Good luck with that.

The new web-based WhatsApp for Windows is uninstalled for now. After the forced switch from the previous app, messages simply stopped syncing on my PC. Nothing I send from Windows goes through, and anything that arrives on my phone never shows up on the desktop. Only Meta could take a perfectly good app and turn it into a trash-tier experience. Honestly, it’s unbelievable how consistently they manage this.

@FreakyFwoof Based on my experience that's exactly what will happen unfortunately. It was a very sad day for me as well. Brian Hartgen's scripts make a massive difference, but of course that only helps if you're a JAWS user. I'm not sure how things are with NVDA add-ons at the moment, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't something out there to help make it a bit more usable

They seem to do that a lot. In my case I just got banned with zero understanding why. Very rude people, very hard to get hold of.

🚨 World's first social media ban begins: Australian & under‑16? Your social media account is now locked. 🚨

What's next? From Dec 27 #AgeVerification checks for search engines like #Google.

BUT - Once your data is in the system, what's stopping it from being used for surveillance?

And what happened to #Privacy? 🧐

Interesting. Someone dropped 240 usb keys around Luxembourg, and 38,4 (16 %) were put into a computer and a file called "disclaimer.html" was opened.

Are usb keys still such a big attack vector?

Other interesting fact: the photo seems to be a stock photo, but they usb key looks EXACTLY like one I have, from Luxembourgs biggest bank.
