At work we use curl as bundled by the various OSes we use. On Linux our HTTP client is using a self built cURL under the hood (and other libraries on other platforms).

Does anyone have an explanation as to why the home annual license for JAWS is no longer listed on Freedom Scientific's shop page. It is still being offered; see this link. store.freedomscientific.com/pr… However, it is not listed on their shop page. Instead, they list a JAWS home subscription, which starts at $623.00 No bashing, please. I'm asking about this in order to gather factual information and not to trash the company or the product. In fact, I'll likely block anyone who does so responding to my question. @freedomscientific
@ratking I can see the benefits of a subscription to their pro licenses but I'm unclear as to the advantages of this new Home subscription license as opposed to the much more affordable home annual license. I wonder if the newer subscriptions are available for users outside of the U.S.?
I wonder what the prices for these new licences will be? If they are going back to a model where they charged $1500 Canadian for a home licence and then an SMA on top of that, I will most definitely consider not keeping Jaws around at all. They are going to have to be very careful with this.
I just took a look at the Freedom online store, and they have a Jaws one year subscription for $673.00. What is not clear to me, if I pay the $673.00 for a one year subscription, what happens after that subscription runs out? Do I still get to use the current version of Jaws I have installed? I'm asuming that is the case.
@douglawlor Doug, this is a valid question. I also don't understand why the home annual license is technically still available but is no longer being shown on the shop page. Prior to that, I have also seen something referred to as an AMS or annual maintenance subscription (if memory serves), which is different than the more familiar SMA. I think these things should be clearly explained by FS.
I'm totally in agreement here. All of this pricing sounds confusing at present. What are we gaining or losing with these new licence types, SMAs, or what ever they are calling them?
@douglawlor What FS told me today is that the $673 is a 3 year subscription for purchasing Jaws for the first time. You pay the $673 for the 3 years and you get is ownership of that version of Jaws along with a SMA. So that subscription is for a perpetual license of Jaws, not an annual subscription. It is just a way of making purchasing Jaws easier. I still have more questions, but that is what I was told so far.
@ChrisChaffin @douglawlor If this is how they plan on doing things, then many users will be unaware of the home annual license for $104.50 and will instead go with the more expensive licensing options. This is very mysterious. It almost sounds like they are doing away with the home annual licenses but are keeping those who have it grandfathered in, so to speak, yet possibly still offering it by phone only?. They really do need to better explain these options.
I found it very confusing myself when I asked about the difference between the differing licensing structures. I was told that a subscription model was coming but not when it would appear. I am not opposed to companies making changes but some clearer communication would indeed be appreciated especially as it pertains to something that now seems more complex than it needed to be in my humble opinion. I along with others wish you all the best in attempting to obtain factual information from which we'll all benefit. Keep us posted please.

@CallumStoneman @doubletap I can verify that I am able to renew my JAWS home annual license at a cost of $104.50. I'm not doing this now, however, as FS usually offers discounts during the week of the ACB and NFB conventions.

I heard directly from FS today and they did confirm that the price of the Home Annual license is no longer on the site, but did not give a reason why. The $623 mentioned on the site is a new 3 year deal they are offering for new perpetual license. Basically speaking, It is a way of purchasing Jaws with a SMA over a 3 year period. So if you are new to Jaws, you can pay $623 for 3 years and in the end, you will own Jaws along with a SMA. I read over that page several times, and I did not get that from it at all. They definitely should explain that better on the site. The gentleman from FS said if you are interested in an Annual License, then you need to call customer service for help. Makes you wonder why it was removed from the site.

Thanks @masonasons for the tip that yt-dlp can download from RSS feeds. Here's the command I came up with to download all available podcast items from a feed in chronological order (oldest first) to nicely numbered files with the title and date.

I you release it as a broken hobby project, fine. Just don't call it a "fully functional" or "community driven" audio editor / encryption utility / mail server / file explorer / chat client if it's completely unusable to a reasonable part of the audience who just happens to be blind, or otherwise impaired.

Similar to iOS lockdown mode, Android 16's Advanced Protection feature is misguided. It adds security features exclusive to it which require using all of the other features. This prevents people using new security features if they need to avoid 1 feature.
Most of the features already existed. The new ones are cloud-based intrusion logging, inactivity reboot (hard-wired to 72 hours), a new mode of USB protection and disabling auto-connect to a small subset of insecure Wi-Fi networks. Production MTE support is also essentially new.
GrapheneOS added locked device auto-reboot in July 2021. We proposed it to Google for Android in January 2024 as part of reporting exploitation by forensic data extraction companies. They implemented several of our other proposals, but not this until iOS added it in October 2024.
Both GrapheneOS and iOS enabled lock device auto-reboot by default, at 18 and 72 hours respectively. It can be set between 10 minutes and 72 hours on GrapheneOS along with having an opt-out. Putting this behind a feature barely anyone will use makes the real world impact minimal.
The Advanced Protection mode support for the ARM Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) is misleading. It won't be using it for the kernel, most of the base OS or 99.999999% of apps. It will only be enabled for certain base OS components and a tiny minority of apps explicitly enabling it.
Certain apps like Molly opt-in to MTE, but this doesn't really do anything since so far Android isn't providing any production MTE support. This tiny minority of apps enabling the feature will finally have it on certain devices for < 0.001% of users using Advanced Protection.
Chrome / Chromium provides a very misleading "V8 Optimizer" toggle which contrary to popular belief does not disable the Just-In-Time compiler and therefore cannot block dynamic code generation. It's not a default JIT disable like iOS lockdown mode or default GrapheneOS.
Chrome's "V8 Optimizer" toggle started out as a JIT toggle. However, Chromium's WebAssembly support currently requires JIT and they quickly crippled the setting in an emergency update. It now only disables the highest 2 tiers of the JIT, so a lot of the security value is missing.
Microsoft implemented a simple WebAssembly interpreter for Microsoft Edge as part of their earlier JIT disable feature. Microsoft submitted their WebAssembly interpreter to Chromium and got it merged after a long time. Chrome / Chromium doesn't use it, maintain it or test it.
Since they aren't maintaining or testing it, other Chromium-based browsers can't use this feature without taking on the responsibility of maintaining it. Google could easily start maintaining it to fix their very misleading "V8 Optimizer" toggle but so far has neglected to do so.
It's entirely possible to provide the new security features standalone and then group them together in a mode enabling all of them, but with the option to disable certain features. That could then show up as a warning that the mode isn't fully enabled. Instead, they copied iOS.
Part of enabling Android's Advanced Protection feature is disallowing users from installing apps from outside of the Play Store. This can currently be bypassed using Android Debug Bridge via developer options, but that's awful for security and they'll likely crack down on it too.
Apps coming from the Play Store doesn't make them trustworthy, safe or secure. Most malware apps on Google Mobile Services devices are installed from the Play Store. Similarly to the Play Integrity API, it's Google reinforcing their monopolies with security as an excuse for it.
Google was already blocking competing app stores with their Advanced Protection Program required to properly secure a Google account, but now they're tying Android device security to this. Want proper encryption security via inactivity reboot? You cannot use competing app stores.
@wmd It won't negative impact GrapheneOS users since the Advanced Protection feature largely won't be available in GrapheneOS due to not having privileged Google Play services integration. We can provide any of the future useful features tied to it as standalone features. Some of the features will likely be possible to use. It's possible to use their theft protection features automatically locking the device by giving Google Play services basic admin access but we should provide our own.
@J3317 @wmd they could yes, but there’s the issue of finding a version that has direct boot support. If it doesn’t have direct boot support, it’s kind of useless in this scenario anyway. Honestly, I am very strongly pushing for that. I installed it once on my old phone, but sadly had to remove it because play integrity was screwing up my reading app. Now that I don’t need the reading app, I really want it back, but I’m not prepared to handover my phone to someone. I don’t trust to set it up.
@J3317 @evilcookies98 @wmd Direct boot aware apps can run in the time between system boot and first unlock. The app needs to be able to run without an access to (most) of its files, since these are encrypted and need unlocking.
I am not sure what exact implication this has for the usability of screen readers, since I haven't needed one.
@darkyen @evilcookies98 oh, thanks for explaining that, so if a tts can't run at boot like most cant, it switches to google TTS, or if you have a Samsung phone Samsung tts when you power on your phone
@J3317 @darkyen still though, you're working under the assumption that all of us have someone trustworthy on command to help us set up our phones. Spoiler alerts, we don't. Since there's no way to push an app to the phone at the same time. Things are flashed, we're screwed. I love what you're doing but that is really putting me off of using it. If I can't set up my phone independently, that's a barrier. I don't always have trustworthy people on hand. I would venture a guess that a lot of us don't. I live with at least one Snoop. We're talking someone who would immediately start going through my messages.
@J3317 @evilcookies98 @darkyen We're not aware of a TTS app we could include right now due to the need for licensing acceptable for inclusion in GrapheneOS and the need for direct boot support. That means either permissive licensing or GPLv2 for both the code AND the language models. We won't use something with non-commercial usage licensing for the language models, etc. We also won't include GPLv3 software in the base OS, although we're fine with redistributing it in our App Store.
@J3317 @evilcookies98 @darkyen We have our open source fork of TalkBack included so all we need is a permissively licensed text-to-speech implementation including the language models (GPLv2 is permissive enough, GPLv3 is not, but we'd prefer MIT / BSD / Apache 2). We'd then need to integrate it so that it's functional by default and add a way to enable TalkBack in our Setup Wizard. We cannot make a TTS implementation ourselves right now, so unless there's a good one we can use, this is blocked.

Now that I’m a little bit older and know what I’m doing, I recommend against anybody buying a vintage iPhone because those wouldn’t talk to you on set up either. If you wanna buy it just to collect it, don’t use it. it won’t talk to you.

The human mind is not unique. We operate on data and patterns and stimuli. We can feed an AI model stimuli too, and it will generate output based on its dataset and learned patterns.
What *is* unique is our emotions. But they can be simulated. They can also be faked by people without them (psychopaths), or those who are not actually experiencing them organically (acting)
Meanwhile, I want AI to do stuff I DON'T want (humans) to do. Common house chores? Yes please. Dangerous jobs, like mining deep underground? Yes please. Dumb and repetitive tasks, like factory conveyor belts? Yes please. Tasks that require incredible precision, like brain surgery? Yes please.
Let humans do the wondering, the exploring, the art. Let us tell the stories, the culture, like we have done for hundreds of thousands of years.
@collectifission I agree, but obviously generating artistic works is cheap and easy in comparison whereas solving the other tasks requires interaction with the physical world and other humans which is risky. Physical harm to a human or property carries a lot of liability, so unless they are shielded from it there's not a lot of incentive to invest in this area.
Sigh. It's possible to remotely, physically locate any O2 mobile customer at any time over the internet with a trivial method using their mobile phone number, due to O2's poor implementation of 4G Calling which, by design, gives away the Cell ID.
