Pretty astoundingly repugnant of Israel to call the Madleen of the Freedom Flotilla "selfie yacht" after they illegally boarded it and abducted the crew.
What they WERE doing was literally knowingly risking their lives for humanity, as Israel against a previous, much larger, humanitarian aid convoy of the same Freedom Flotilla murdered 10 of those participants when they illegally boarded that convoy in international waters, out of which one according to a witness with a headshot. Also, this iteration of the Freedom Flotilla was airstrike-bombed outside Malta, extremely "probably" by Israel, so they have a different, smaller boat as the previous ship as a result of the bombing got a hole in the hull. As civilians the only protection they had and have against being murdered too is that they are well and widely known, that "the whole world is watching" as the slogan goes, so they could not just be silently assassinated. This also fills the purpose of enabling democracy to properly function against war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, by highlighting current grave injustice. To inform others when something is wrong is foundational to any democracy, which is probably also why the current authoritarian far-right regime of Israel despises it.

It was also Turkey who blocked this now boarded iteration of Freedom Flotilla from leaving port for months, obstructing their continuing on to Gaza.

The response to Greta Thunberg being illegally abducted by Israel, people calling the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Sweden to pressure them to actually do their jobs this time, has now been commented by the MFA being outraged that "A campaign has started where one calls the MFA to a large extent and thus blocks calls for others who ae in urgent need of consular aid" (my translation)... blaming the people worried and upset about this repeat violation against another citizen of Sweden for the MFA's own failure to properly staff their lines, address the concerns in an appropriate and proactive manner and most of all to take open and clear action to fulfill their jobs.
It's not the public's job to create some queue-system deciding whose turn it is to get the great honor of calling the Ministry. It's the Ministry's job to... do their jobs.

Pár týdnů před porodem jsem odevzdala (JSME odevzdaLY 🥰) překlad Glory od zimbabwské spisovatelky NoViolet Bulawayo. Bude se jmenovat Slavné časy a vyjde ve Světové knihovně Odeonu. ❤️
Je to politická satira, alegorie pádu zimbabwského diktátora Roberta Mugabeho v roce 2017, a následného zvolení jeho nástupce. Zároveň je to příběh ženy, která se vrátí do své rodné země po deseti letech v exilu a postupně si ze střípků skládá obraz o minulosti svojí rodiny, o níž nevěděla. O genocidě Gukurahundi jste slyšeli? A taky je to přehlídka názorů, dojmů a životních epizod nejrůznějších společenských skupin žijících v nesvobodě autoritářského postkoloniálního režimu.
To vše volně a přiznaně inspirováno Farmou zvířat a psáno tak hravým jazykem s tolika originálními obrazy a mluvícími jmény a s takovým smyslem pro ironii a parodizaci mluvy konkrétních vrstev, že se mi to chtělo překládat od první chvíle, co jsem knížku v roce 2022 vzala do ruky. 🐎🐖🐐
Úplně easy to nebylo, ale nakonec se mi pro ni podařilo během minulého roku sehnat nakladatele i stipendijní podporu Ministerstva kultury. Díky tomu jsem teď část posledních několika měsíců trávila dumáním nad stovkami substitucí a kompenzací a převodem slovních hříček a mluvících jmen a přibližování zimbabwských (!) reálií českému čtenářstvu, zatímco mě kopal malý člověk. Na tohle období budu vzpomínat ráda.
Textem se momentálně probírá Anežka Dudková, kterou jsem si vyžádala jako redaktorku a která je skvělá a navíc dobře zná moje textové manýry a nic mi nedá zadarmo a vím, že překladu strašně pomůže. Uvidíme, jestli budu její redakci autorizovat s píďalkou ještě v bříšku, nebo už v náručí. 😊
Držte palce a na každý pád si ji přečtěte, až bude venku. Bude mít navíc krásnou pevnou vazbu, se kterou půjde fakt dobře bušit Čecháčky do hlavy za moudra typu “Afričani mají krásný, bohatý země a kdyby nebyli líní a neschopní, mohli dávno prosperovat”. Doporučuju. 👌

No, it's not a prompt, it's not a better model, it's not better context management. It's... that config option in Claude code that makes your terminal beep when it's done.
I wish there was a mode where it would constantly beep until you gave it attention, though.
Zajímalo by mě, jestli to je nějaká forma PR spolupráce nebo obsese redakce Živě a Computeru Mapy.com. Teď tam mají o tomto produktu článek snad každý týden a nikdy nezapomenou zmínit, jak úžasný produkt to je. Nejlépe přímo v titulku. Jednu dobu takhle promovali třeba #Zoner Photo Studio, což jsem taky moc nechápal.
Neříkám, že Mapy.com nejsou dobré. Ale tohle podkuřování nikomu dobrou službu neudělá. Jen to v Češích buduje falešnou představu, že tu máme po všech stránkách unikátní produkt. Přitom trh s mapovými službami je ve skutečnosti hodně rozmanitý.
Zajímavá je i diskuse, kde někdo pokládá správnou otázku, proč by měl přispívat někomu do komerčního produktu, a šéfredaktor Computeru mu na to odepisuje, že odměnou mu má být to, že má Mapy.com zadarmo. Jakoby uživatel Seznamu neplatil už svými daty a zobrazováním reklamy... 🤷♂️
@mkyral To předplatné mně osobně nevadí. Naopak bych klidně platil víc. Vždyť za OsmAnd platím 800 ročně. Vadí mi, že i s předplatným sbírají o lidech data a zobrazují jim reklamy, a zlomem pro mě bylo, že jsem došel k tomu, že do uzavřeného projektu přispívat už nechci a zároveň nechci pasivně používat mapy a nepřispívat k jejich zlepšování.
Já jen reagoval na tu věc, že mapy.com jsou zadarmo - no ne tak úplně.
OsmAnd má ten model trochu jiný - platí se za dostupnost častějších aktualizací.
Kdežto mapy.com zpoplatňují offline data a tím nutí uživatele používat online stahování. To mi moc nedává smysl, jen to zvyšuje nároky na server, síť a uživatelům to odčerpává mobilní data.
Tady se odvážím si svojí biased dojmo-statistikou oponovat: Poslední ~3 roky moji hosté z celého světa na #WarmShowers / #CouchSurfing už výhradně hlásí že používají jen dvě aplikace se splitem 50/50 mezi #MapyCz a #Komoot. Jakákoliv alternativa pro kolo / hiking je spíš výjimečná. Mapy.cz jsou ve světě známé a uznávané.
@MichalBryxi Neříkám, že nejsou, ale zároveň nejsou zdaleka tak populární, jak si lidi u nás na základě podobných článků myslí. Někdy mi přijde, že má u nás hodně lidí představu, že jsou Google Maps, pak možná ještě Apple Maps a naše Mapy.com jsou k nim jedinou alternativou. (sám jsem podobné povědomí měl do loňska taky)
Přitom Mapy.com se teprve nedávno přehouply na Google Play přes 10 milionů stažení. Populárnější je z tohoto pohledu slovenský Sygic. Podobně populární je Locus Map, který dělá malá pražská firmička, kterou u nás nikdo nezná. Podstatně více stažení má např. open-source OsmAnd.
Reálně tak Mapy.com patří do skupiny 20 nejpopulárnějších mapových aplikací na světě, což je skvělé, ale v té skupině máme v Česku další aplikaci a na Slovensku taky. A o tom se moc nepíše.
Asi jsem potkal jen pár lidí co na kolo teď používají mapy.com. Dost lidí s Organic maps jen jednoho motorkáře taky s OsmAnd ale ten mix je daleko pestřejší, a to jsem v Portugalsku potkal i borca s papírovou mapou z benzínky (hodně old school touring).
Je teda pravda že v tom outdoorovém prostoru Google prostě ztrácí popularitu nebo ji nikdy neměl a teď hodně lidí hledá a zkouší různé alternativy.
Rozhodně si nemyslím že to je tak černobílé 50/50 mapy/komoot a když se o tom s někým bavím tak těch map a dalších mapových nástrojů používají většinou více (brouter/ oficiální stránky tras na plánování + mapu na navigaci + mapové nástroje pro cyklo počítač + mapu pro vyhledávání POI...)
Já jsem toho za posledních pár měsíců využil/využívám tak 5-6 různých zdrojů a mapy.com teda ne protože mobil bez aktualizovaných map mě umřel a nechci platit předplatné.
@plactagonic Jo, u nás to je právě tak, že kdo nepoužívá Google Maps, používá Mapy.com a pak může Čech nabýt dojmu, že tomu tak je všude, ale v zahraničí je ta realita mnohem rozmanitější. Google Maps dominují, ale pak je to řada aplikací, které se zaměřují na různé oblasti.
Mapy.com to mají v zahraničí o to složitější, že za hranicemi používají OSM (nemůžou se odlišovat od konkurence proprietárními daty), množství recenzí k POI klesá k nule, chybí Panorama a kromě pár okolních zemí tam nemají ani informace o dopravě. Ve výsledku tam tak jako jediná přidaná hodnota zůstává ten pěkný rendering map.

If you are blind and have multiple computers, and especially if you live on the edge and don't have a monitor hooked up to one of those computers, having a capture card really is a game changer. I have a cheap one that I need to replace. But even with that cheap one, I was just able to call Aira from my laptop and select the capture card as my video device, rather than my camera. Then, I hooked the capture card up to a mini PC that needed an OS reinstall, and the Aira agent was able to read the display output in real time. From that point, it took us about 30 seconds to get into the boot menu of the mini PC and select the USB drive. Even without account for Aira, having a way to reliably capture the output of a computer is infinitely useful. All you need is an app that can take a picture or video from that device and interpret it as-needed. That could be an OCR reader, an AI describer like Be My Eyes, or a calling app so you can ask a friend to look at it. It certainly beats needing to position the camera in front of a screen, and in the case of the mini PC, it saves me from having to set up a screen in the first place.
@jfayre Well, you could've just gotten the iso and run it from there, thus not needing the sighted assistance in the first place, but this is stil good info to have.
@Bruce @jfayre It's a pretty reasonable assumption. Most people just want to reinstall Windows, not change the OS to Linux. But yeah, sadly it's one of those things you still need sighted help for, or you need to just guess.
@fireborn @ElementalEcho Windows 11 comes with an optional wireless display feature. So you can install that on a laptop, launch the "Wireless Display" app from the start menu, and then on your desktop, press windows+k and connect to your laptop. I did this the other day. Worked perfectly.

I ask because I don't like to contemplate how different, and possibly worse, my life would have been if my parents had taken such a cautious position about personal computers in the 80s.

in reply to Matt Campbell • • •@matt The entire blog post is an argument that there is something special about generative models that works in ways that are similar to homeopathy and psychic cons and has a risk model that's more similar to pharmaceuticals than other tech. I mention several examples of how it's different including citing another long blog post of mine.
If you missed that then I must have made a huge mistake in how I wrote the blog post.
