I can’t help but feel vindicated for my ultimate decision to not touch #Bluesky even though my reason was different than this; I couldn’t get past the captcha to even get an account created. I'm a little surprised. I thought that Bluesky was supposed to be what Twitter isn't. I also had trouble with the CAPTCHA a while back (in theory, the one they use should be accessible, but, unless things have changed recently, their accessibility cookie has not been tested in a while and does not work on modern browsers, at least not out of the box). (Yeah, I could just ask a sighted person to help me with it, but, still, it's a road block and can be demotivating).
It had its last release in 2022, and the source code archived in 2024 – while still being marked "alpha" and "not sure if it works", but we still see around 20 installs (aka downloads by F-Droid clients) per month.

Alright, hey people. I usually would not be posting about this, but I wanted to keep myself safe, even though I don't expect this to happen to me. A certain troll has been impersonating people more often as of the past couple days. The only accounts that belong to me are this one ( @Kaliah ) and my alternate account ( @Haven_of_dreams ). No other accounts claiming my name, bio, or anything else belong to me. I have no plans to migrate, create any new accounts, or change this presence in any way, so there's no other anticipated accounts that will exist in the future. If anyone sees anything concerning or questionable, please feel free to DM me for confirmation or help. Alright, that's it. Back to your regularly scheduled scrolling. :)
It saw its last release in 2019, its repo lies dormant since 2022 with issues ignored – but we still see about 10 downloads per month via F-Droid clients (so app installs). So shall we keep it as "still useful" – or remove it as "It's dead, Jim!"?

so the next necessary step would be to close down Android even more and forcing such apps to comply. Not really believing that this will happen, but just in case: that's why having #LinuxMoblie / #postmarketos as additional backup is IMO so valuable.
Coincidentally have just been working on improving video calls in @dino - so omemo encrypted calls (compatible with Conversations) are becoming more usable on phones with (close to) mainline kernels.
@dino Hoping I'm not missing any irony here, considering how big the feature gap to Conversations on Android still is :P (great app!)
But assuming you mean it: thanks for the encouragement, I hope we can use the moment to get a bit more traction around that whole technology stack (#linuxmobile, #jabber, #xmpp)
@rmader @dino no irony. But emphasis on 'future'. I don't think postmarketOS is fully ready yet. But I have more trust in Linux on mobile than Android. Until we get there Conversations will obviously be around.
@rmader @dino I haven't used PostmarketOS, so I cannot really speak to how fully ready it is. I have been using a mobile linux OS for 5 years now. First Mobian on the Pinephone and more recently PureOS on the Librem5. When it comes to how ready they are, their are two issues. App availability and hardware support. Mobile Linux has plenty of apps, but they may not be the apps that you see in android. PMOS has done as much as anyone to get on multiple types of hardware.
@joshua @rmader @dino We might be able to help with the App availability problem. Android has a great ecosystem of fantastic FLOSS apps made by a community of very talented developers. A lot of those developers are currently fed up with the bullshit Google is pulling off.

I'm also importing some of your tags (e.g. 'wooden' as 'material=wood'), but not all of them. 'Funny' is too subjective for OSM, 'cat' and 'dog' are a bit of a mixed bag and not always about a remembered pet. Emoji can be handled by simply putting an emoji into OSM

Hey @termux, I just installed #termux on a new #GrapheneOS device. When I did pkg upgrade, it automatically chose a Chinese mirror although I am in Europe, and I am not using Orbot or any VPN. Should I be worried?
if you don't want to use those mirrors, you are free to run the "termux-change-repo" command in your terminal to change your mirrors per their geographical continent(Asia, Europe...).
That would be neat... But for privacy reasons we do not want to rely on 3rd party do to the location estimation (which is typically done by trying to geolocate IP address).
We had a mirrorbits service before on our server to handle automatically redirecting to estimated closest mirror, and will likely set it up again at some point, but from user perspective it is still better to manually set closest mirror, to avoid unnecessary redirects
I assumed that when it says, “testing the available mirrors,” pkg does something like netselect-apt, apt-mirror-updater or apt-smart in the background to find the fastest package repository. Those tools do not rely on a third-party service, I think.
@Rastal That just what I did next, and it helped. But that is just a workaround. I would hate to see more European users defaulting to using Chinese software repositories.

While I totally understand your view (and know that you want to do the right thing), I feel that it would be better to make the impact as big (and obvious) as possible. First it will be Signal, then a few others, and finally Conversations. Maybe better to go for all-or-nothing from the beginning?
well, we appreciate Signal trying to make a difference with its public weight ahead of the oct14 chat control vote. Yes, Signal is centralized and running on gafam servers but it also was a key leading effort to make e2ee UX widely available ... and that is fundamentally threatened by #chatcontrol. Federated #xmpp or #email servers do not help against legislation that aims at apps and clients. This is a time to put all of our joint weight against chatcontrol, not gamble for exceptions.
@delta I am not sure to understand your argument well. So I understand (perhaps not correctly) the idea of this time with #ChatControl is that the messages are scanned on the client's side, and before that the infrastructure does not matter. I will avoid that restriction but the vast majority of people do not do it. If they do not scan my device they will do it in the person with whom I communicate. It would be a lost battle.
I'm sorry I don't get your point. Do you mean that xmpp is not at risk with chatcontrol? Why? Because it is decentralized? What you'll face is you won't be able to exist on the play store for not complying, just like you "collect email" for Google.
The fight is to not loose the rights older generations fought for. Everything else is arrogance. Thinking you can out smart authoritarian shifts and attacking voices fighting this is really blind sighted. You may not like signals public stunts, but attacking them for using their weight to lobby against chat control is very divisive. In unity we can be strong, singled out we will get ran over. This is not about xmpp vs signal. This is liberty vs dystopia.
@obsoleszenz @delta Political action is important. I was on the streets protesting against the first data retention (Vorratsdatenspeicherung) laws 20 years ago. However we also need a Plan B. "Leaving Europe" is either an empty threat or not helpful at all to the people living here. People need to know that they can rely on Jabber/XMPP in general and #Conversations_im in particular to stay around no matter what.
EU Chat Control won't apply to the federated Jabber/XMPP ecosystem. #Conversations_im is used by various militaries, police forces and intelligence agencies in Europe. They will make sure it won't get any client side scanning.

@aslmx I can't. The Conversations article on Wikipedia has references to the German federal police using it. Other than that this particular target demographic is oddly secretive about their operations.
I've seen no reason to believe it won't apply to all civilian social media services. If mil folk use it those services will split off. There's no way there will be accidental outs, for long anyway.
@tomjennings Chat Control has exceptions for closed, private deployments. For example Slack or Microsoft Teams won't have client side scanning. (That would be stupid and open the door for corporate espionage, and if anything is more important than the children it's capitalism). Jabber/XMPP is just a series of private deployments that occasionally happen to be interconnected. #Conversations_im is a client that can connect to closed, private deployments so it won't get client side scanning.
I searched for that but could not find any such excemptions.... If they are there, Matrix and SimpleX would also be excenpt. And stating that Teams is a private deployment seems like a wild statement

So is Signal and they are affected. My feeling is that to make it work they will make a 2.1 which moves it to the OS level. The EU surveillance proposals for 2029 already address device encryption as all key unlockable by Google/Apple, this will follow pretty quickly

@gvs No, Signal is not used in private deployments. I guess you could technically run your own Signal server but I have not heard of anyone doing that and this is most certainly not as widespread as XMPP is in these deployments. I mean there was #SignalGate but anyone who reported on that, who understood a little bit how these things usually work, made absolutely clear that Signal is not a thing commonly used by military and intelligence.
I wouldn't be so sure about that, after all, the way of implementing it hasn't been specified at all. To make sure the malware is even installed they'd either have to force all manufacturers to make it an integral system component or the mobile providers to not let you online unless your device responds to an encrypted ping for the app. Both would let them turn the trojan off explicitly for phones identifying as belonging to something cop-adjacent.
Interesting. Still, I am wondering how Chatcontrol will affect those who own the servers. Perhaps they will be criminalised because they enable encrypted messaging or something.
