In a past life, I did an internet radio show, called "Things and Stuff", where much of my time was spent messing with buttons, sliders and knobs, talking about and demonstrating weird things, and playing music.

On December 23, 2017, I did one of only two pre-recorded shows in the 14 years that Things and Stuff existed, this being that year's Christmas-themed show.

Should you care to throw a bunch of Christmas things at your face, including a look back at recordings of somewhat incriminating Perdue family Christmases from every year between 1986 and 2017, except for 1997, as presented by me and another me (who doesn't talk to themselves every now and then), you can do so, at least until I get around to removing all the 2016 through 2019 archives from the place they are currently being hosted.

Now, if that's not incentive, I don't know what is.

We can't put enough gratitude in the character limit for everything our community has helped us do this year, so we wrote a recap blog. Thank you everyone who made this all happen! 💙 🙌

I'm listening with the wife, but we're only half way through the first book so far. Finding time is hard with the baby.

It's weird how I've actually read well over 4 million words of fanfiction, but actually only read the original series 3 times (once as a first read, again for me to log on my goodreads, and a third time with my daughter. She's listened to all the audiobooks many times, but I read them all to her myself when she was younger.
She's looking forward to the new TV series next year.
I imagine these full cast recordings are bringing the stories to another generation, too.

Just tried getting a program to run that didn't want to.

"ooh I forgot I have that thing called a coding agent, let's see what it can do."

Two minutes (and a few really weird binary metadata inspection tricks) later, I have the command that makes the program run.

Not being very familiar with the environment, I'd be surprised if I could pull it off inside an hour if I had to do it all myself.

New #screenReader verbosity settings for messages are now widely available in #Slack, under the #accessibility category of preferences. You can now control which parts of messages are spoken and in what order.

As part of this change, you'll also find that recent replies in threads now have relative timestamps (e.g. "just now" or "2 minutes ago") instead of absolute ones. This update brings the screen reader experience in line with the visual interface, with absolute timestamps still being used outside of threads.

If you have suggestions or run into problems, please use the /feedback command and mention that you use a screen reader. Alternatively I'm also happy to pass along any issues if I can reproduce them.

Please be advised that all employees planning to dash through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh, going over the fields and laughing all the way are required to undergo a Risk Assessment addressing the safety of open sleighs.
The assessment must also consider whether it is appropriate to use only one horse for such a venture, particularly where there are multiple passengers. Please note that permission must also be obtained in writing from landowners before their fields may be entered. To avoid offending those not participating in celebrations, we request that laughter is moderate only and not loud enough to be considered a noise nuisance.
Benches, stools and orthopaedic chairs are now available for collection by any shepherds planning or required to watch their flocks at night. While provision has also been made for remote monitoring of flocks by CCTV cameras from a centrally heated shepherd observation hut, all facility users are reminded that an emergency response plan must be submitted to account for known risks to the flocks. The angel of the Lord is additionally reminded that prior to shining his/her glory all around s/he must confirm that all shepherds are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to account for the harmful effects of UVA, UVB and the overwhelming effects of Glory
Following last year’s well publicised case, everyone is advised that legislation prohibits any comment with regard to the redness of any part of Mr. R. Reindeer. Further to this, exclusion of Mr. R Reindeer from reindeer games will be considered discriminatory and disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty of this offence.
While it is acknowledged that gift-bearing is commonly practised in various parts of the world, particularly the Orient, everyone is reminded that the bearing of gifts is subject to Hospitality Guidelines and all gifts must be registered. This applies regardless of the individual, even royal personages. It is particularly noted that direct gifts of currency or gold are specifically precluded under provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Further, caution is advised regarding other common gifts, such as aromatic resins that may initiate allergic reactions.
Finally, for those involved in the recent case of the infant found tucked up in a manger without any crib for a bed, Social Services have been advised and will be arriving shortly.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas – be safe out there.......

RE: toot.cafe/@baldur/115740595660…

This post is a good example of why truth and factuality same thing. This is the most viscerally true thing I’ve read in a long while, but the degree to which it’s factual or not is largely irrelevant. It feels like a kick in the gut nonetheless

(It is tagged as ‘non-fiction, so it probably is factual)

RE: someplace.social/@jonathan859/…

Guess what, btw, I haven't been contacted regarding my work time tomorrow until now. My taxi isn't informed yet, and I have now proactively messaged the responsible person. I'd love to just stay at home if I don't get an answer, but sadly this is my fucking job and I don't need even more trouble.

My vocational school class is going to the cinema next Friday, actually, not even just the class, several other classes from the school. Our English teacher was (apparently) able to select a movie from the catalog. But, guess what, oh no how sad, the film has no audio description, but but, we even asked the cinema, so sorry, we need to find an alternative for you. The alternative is that while my classmates to whom I already am separated thanks to several other factors of my disability enjoy themselves next Friday, I'll be sitting at the office (being given the time to work on school stuff), and of course I don't have to stay the full time. You know I'm not even angry, this was totally no surprise to me but it's so fucking ridiculous.

#PeerReview

Every time there's news from Mozilla we see a lot of takes around here along the lines of: they're clueless, their heads are in the sand, they don't know their userbase.

Alternative interpretation: We're looking at another case very much like Bluesky - a corporation with somewhat-openwashed branding which knows exactly who their userbase is, hates it, and wants a different one.

The rationale is clear enough; the browser is just a massive opportunity for datamining. The "AI" startups can only dream of controlling a browser with even the marketshare of Firefox. In that light, it's no use having a userbase of technically competent, privacy-aware dissidents who can work around the extractive dark patterns. Let's face it people, we're not profitable to surveillance capitalism

Fedora's elections are now open until Wednesday, 7th January!

I'm applying for a seat at FESCo [1] as I want to represent the interests of users, developers and maintainers of what we call Atomic, Bootable Container, Image Based or Immutable variants of Fedora (CoreOS, Atomic Desktops, IoT, bootc, etc.).

Inclusiveness

September 2025: There are lots of rainbow arches and pavements around Iceland, but this has to be my favourite.

The LGBTQ+ pride colours changing to transgender pride and back again at the far end is a clever idea.

The location of many happy marriages, I'm sure, this pavement can be found at Ísafjörður in the Westfjords of #Iceland.

Lesbians of the world!

(and also other people I suppose)

I have one remaining thing to get/do/arrange ahead of Chrimbo (excluding all of the other stuff).... and that is get a present for my eldest kiddo. Just between us so be cool and don't say anything, but she's proposing to her girlfriend on Tuesday so (assuming she doesn't tell her to get on her bike) it looks like I will be inheriting a brand new daughter in law, which I'm very excited about. However - I have got ZERO ideas for a Christmas present for one or either or both of them and I thought it might be nice to do something that also encompasses their engagement.

I ask for lesbian engagement because I don't recall having a lesbian wedding in the family before (I have GOT to stop calling it a lesbian wedding) and wondered if there's some cool secret lesbian ideas for engagement and Christmas presents that I haven't yet thought of. So I'd be really grateful if you could get on the secret lesbian underground network, do the special secret lesbian handshake, give me temporary lesbian authorisation/clearance and help me come up with ideas because at the moment they are terrible. It's all..... Vouchers for a nice dinner, which is BULLSHIT. In my head I want to get them like quad-biking and such, but I can't help feel that's mildly offensive and they're not really action-lesbians. I've definitely said the word lesbian too much.

Learned something new today:
Both organisation and organization are correct spellings of the word, but they are regional spellings: organization (with a 'z') is American English (AmE), while organisation (with an 's') is British English (BrE) and common in Commonwealth countries. Both refer to the same meaning: the act of organizing or a structured group of people/things.

Chtěl jsem dneska makat na webu.
No, mám pocit, že to nevyjde.
Sice se mi fakt chtělo, ale… 😇
