The Firefox "Mastodon - Simplified Federation!" is helpful as it makes following people on other instances when browsing those instances' websites a much smoother task. It automatically enters your handle/server & actions it on your account. addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef… #FediTips #tips

I give Musk a year, maybe two, before he wants out of #Twitter. This article from The Verge nails the reasons why, closing with:

"Anyhow, welcome to hell. This was your idea."

This is my third time (attempt?) migrating to Mastodon from Twitter. The first lasted a while, although I cross-posted everything to both platforms. The second time, I lasted just three posts, before bailing back to Twitter. Both times nobody else had come along with me, today the #TwitterMigration seems to be a big one, I've picked up 200 followers in the space of a few hours. So, maybe this time it's real? But no matter what happens? "Welcome to hell, Elon." theverge.com/2022/10/28/234281…

Personally, I'm ding dang happy to see groups like Nextcloud offer no-fuss instances. Not everyone likes to self-host and it's better than everyone DDoSing that one big node.

Hello to all the new people! 👋

You can choose any Mastodon server to sign up on, but you can also make your own server if you want!

You don't need tech skills or deep pockets, you can get a managed hosting account for about 6 euros a month. (Managed hosting means the hosting company does all the tech stuff.)

If you want more info including a list of companies that offer this, have a look at:

I wrote up some instructions on how to enable the "Edit button" on your Mastodon instance, if anyone's interested.

Basically edit
1. app/javascript/mastodon/components/status_action_bar.js
2. app/javascript/mastodon/features/status/components/action_bar.js

Uncomment menu.push({ text: intl.formatMessage(messages.edit), action: this.handleEditClick });

Do a yarn run build:production and restart your Mastodon services and that should enable it!

Boosts appreciated 🔁

Hello everyone!

We’ve got some cool news to share :) A while back, we sent an application off to NLnet as part of one of their NGI0 Entrust funding rounds.

We got word back earlier this week that we’ve been granted the funding we asked for! This means that for the next year or so, subject to final negotiations with NLnet, GoToSocial will have ~50k euros to spend on research + development.

In short, this means that tobi (current most-obsessed dev) will be able to work on GoToSocial full time for the next year, without having to get a part-time job somewhere. This also means we can pay Maloki and f0x for their ongoing admin work + frontend work, respectively.

The NLnet grant gives tobi in particular a lot more financial security and peace of mind, ensuring that development can keep moving along at a good pace. Even so, we will still be keeping donations open to our LiberaPay and OpenCollective pages.

Your very kind (!) donations will be used to pay for additional things like server costs, art, design work, and also put towards the pool for paying contributors for their code (once we figure out the best way of doing this).

Thank you for reading, and have a nice weekend!

New people! Here's how to fill your timeline:

-Follow hashtags if your server supports it. You can do this by logging in through the website, searching for a tag, then clicking the + in the top right corner. New posts with those tags will appear in your timeline.

-Find interesting people on directories:

#GNOME project retiring their mailing lists for good is interesting to me.

As I have worked with colleagues that primarily use them and having used Discourse for a long time, I would assure them that email replies work well.
I hope they'll stay active and I'd expect the community to get a little closer.

So this gives an example to for other projects to move forward too.

I'm fairly certain that the migration to Discourse has already been successful: we developed a healthy critical mass over the past three years since we experimented moving the core toolkit lists over to Discourse. We had more traffic and more newcomers there, while the trend for mailing lists has been going down over the past 15 years. Right now, our main holdovers are people *strongly* used to email flows; some converted, others won't.
