I'm not blind or have impaired vision, so take this with a grain of salt (feel free to correct me), but people who put nondescript one sentence alt texts are almost worse than those who put no alt text.
At least if I'm about to boost a picture without, glitch-soc will warn me about it. If a picture has an alt text like "screenshot of my tweet", that's less than useless but it will slip through the alt text detector.
Write good alt text ffs. Describe the picture. Not a title or a TLDR, a proper description. If it's text, copy the text into the image description. If it's selfies, don't write "a selfie of me", describe your selfies. Describe film scenes, descripe paintings, descripe charts and infographics. You have, on this instance at least, 1500 characters to describe your pictures. Do it.
And if 1500 isn't enough, you can add a second picture to keep describing it.
What possesses people from opening issues leaving comments like these and expect the maintainer to actually care *one iota* about their issue. I especially love the bait to have me rage fix their pet issue.

@peterpur Yeah, that has been the bane of my life for the past 20 years. I freely admit I was a shithead like that on Usenet, back when I was 17 and started using Linux. Joining the GNOME community quickly disabused me of the notion that you have to insult people to get things done properly.
hopefully we can all collectively build the tools to make people like these have less of a voice, and make them a burden to as few people as possible. I'm sorry to hear it's so common for the people that spend so much effort building things to help others :(

I'm sad server search dissapeared recently from my K-9. I only use phone for emails when AFK, so only few mails now and then get to the local store in the phone.
@fileneed Server search is still there and works pretty much like it always did. But, we only support it for IMAP accounts, and only for a single folder at a time (not aggregated folders like the unified inbox). f
First go to the folder, perform a local search, then tap the "magnifying glass with a cloud" icon to trigger the server-side search.
@downey You can expect a LOT of tightening up. This is just to inform the design, definitely NOT the final design. We want to put these revisions in your hands first, and get lots of feedback.
I can't tell from the screenshots, but will the menus to move an email to a folder be streamlined? The current four-step process of Menu -> Refile -> Move -> Folder is one of the main reasons I switched from K-9 for a while. I'm back now, but it still chafes to do that for each email!
I don't like it at all. I prefer the K-9 mail design, it is 500% more understandable right now. Hope you can correct all the design in this thunderbird android.
PD: the header is overloaded, there are more buttons in the mail and that sticker saying the mail name isn't very helpful
Do you have / are you considering a feature where custom rule-based notifications can be configured? (e.g. if email comes from a particular address, or is sent to a particular mailbox, then use a different notification sound) Rule-based notifications was something I loved about the Touchdown Android app back in the day, and it's a feature which is much more at home on mobile than on web/desktop.
This new design looks a lot prettier, and the text styling seems a lot more readable (larger line spacing ftw), but I do think that the header takes up too much space compared to K9 today which seems more focused on the content. Maybe there could be a compact mode that makes the header much smaller?
All that being said, I ❤️ all the work and backing that Thunderbird is putting into K9 mail.
I'd like a nice threaded view without the step in between. Just like Gmail has, basically message cards in a list view you can tap to expand. One less level of navigation.
I mean basically everything should look like Gmail app.

The OpenKeychain GitHub states: "WARNING: This software is no longer actively developed." They haven't published any new version or security fixes at least since May 2021, and had no changes in the repo since August 2021. Why would any non-technical person use software this old? It is not maintained for almost a year and a half. It seems to me like a potential major attack vector.
This will be a great step towards independence from big service providers. I've been using #K9Mail and #Thunderbird for a few years now, and I can't wait to see them married.
@xinomilo @fell Maybe you're not thinking about the fact that using Thunderbird for your Gmail account eliminates a few things: -Ads in Gmail -Extensive and creepy tracking -Complete lack of customization
We think that DOES give users some freedom. And if your argument is they should just ditch Gmail, that's not easy for some people, for a variety of valid reasons.

@Bubu First one is a Dreamcast VMU. They plugged into the controller. You could save games to them as well as pull them out and play little mini games on them as well.

yes. I would be happy to be listed, if folks there think I belong in their club. I’ve been getting added to lists for years on Twitter & have been fortunate to rarely be the target of networked harassment as a result. It’s a profoundly human behavior to classify and categorize ideas, objects, & people, online and offline, & there’s no clear downside for me here, & maybe upside.

The #F-Droid build system can feel restrictive to devs because we require building from source and only use binary build tools that are confirmed to be built from source. That means allowlisting trusted organizations to do the right thing, then looking for exceptions. Requiring everything be free software is the standard of the best distros, and what #F-Droid strives for. This goes against what Google is trying to with the Android ecosystem. They are pushing hard to get everything using their proprietary bits so that they can control the ecosystem. #F-Droid is the biggest force pushing back.

Groups are different from #hashtags in an important way: you will only see posts with hashtags your instance knows about — it's essentially a search feature. Wow. This is super clever. Thanks. When I search for or follow a hashtag, I see posts from people I don't follow but who are also on other instances. Do you know if that is because someone else on my instance is following those people or is there some other federation going on here?
But if that's the case, what's the advantage of a.gup.pe groups if hashtag searches do pull in other users and you can now also follow hashtags? The one thing I can think of is that your instance might not know about some other instances at all, in which case a hashtag search wouldn't find them.

This is awesome. I'd love to leverage Threads more (hopefully when it's out of beta more people will be encouraged to use it) and the performance improvements around it are great to see.
