mastodon - Link to source

PipeWire Project

@hoergen
All devices have a unique node.name property that you can use to identify it. 'pactl list sinks short' can show those. To automatically load/save links you will need to make a script (using pw-link, for example) or use one of the jack tools like jack-matchmaker to link based on pattern matching.

An #anthropologist attends a #CPAC conference ( #conservative #RightWing #America) and reports on their findings of the attitude towards #trans folks.

This being @SAPIENS_org, it is well thought through, fully supportive of trans folks and focused on debunking some of the #myths that the right perpetuate.

I'm really pleased to see serious #academic #writing focused on supporting trans folks. Will the right wing read this? Probably not. Will people who are unaware of the attacks trans folk experience every day read this? Quite probably. Will it help to increase understanding, empathy and allyship? I sincerely hope so.

I normally post these on Twitter, but it just occurred to me I could try doing so here: MIT Technology Review has an open call for pitches, for our upcoming issue on ⚖️ethics⚖️. We're looking for *big* swings: features, investigations, profiles, and sharp essays at the intersection of #ethics and #technology. Rates: $1-2/word.

Pitch deadline is tomorrow: April 20. Short notice, I know! If you have an idea, but need a day or two to write up a pitch, send me an e-mail (see technologyreview.com/how-to-pi…)

Ich hab mal ne ganz bescheidene Frage, gerne auch an die #neuhier Fraktion:

Was fehlt euch an #Mastodon ?

I love that the Rhodes Mark 8 exists. I'd never be able to afford one, and sadly I don't think the official vst plugin sounds as good as the real thing.
But it's just wonderful that they're making Rhodes pianos again.
I love this video of them demoing the model with built-in effects.

Every year I do an activity on the fugitive slave law & civil disobedience. We talk about whether protest is worthwhile and when, if ever, it's ok to break the law to stand for moral principles.

In past years, most students were pretty cynical & said protest wasn't helpful; they wouldn't risk their own safety and security for civil disobedience. Today, numerous students said that the risk to the country of not protesting for what is right was greater than the personal risk of getting arrested.

What has changed, beyond the random mix of students? My best guess is that the frequency of protests, esp by young people, has an influence, as does the very real sense in their generation that there are serious and urgent problems in the world. That said, when I asked how many of them had ever engaged in protest or civil disobedience, only 3/23 had.

In 1930, the 22-million-pound Indiana Bell building was rotated 90 degrees over a month at a rate of 15 inches per hour, while 600 employees worked inside. Despite the slow movement, there was no interruption to the building's services, and none of the employees felt it move. #ConstructionHistory #StructuralEngineering

#ChatControl #OnlineSafetyBill #EarnIt - Lots of politicians want to undermine encryption once again. When will they ever learn that a "backdoor for the good guys only" is simply not possible?

Politiker wollen wieder einmal die Verschlüsselung untergraben. Wann werden sie jemals lernen, dass eine "Hintertür nur für die Guten" einfach nicht möglich ist?

Over the Easter holidays I experimented a bit with building Rust code with meson instead of cargo.

Specifically I tried building a GStreamer plugin with a few dozen Rust dependencies, but the same applies in a similar way to GTK/GNOME applications or literally anything else.

A write-up of the results with a lot of details can be found here: coaxion.net/blog/2023/04/build…

OK, friends. I could use your boosting powers on this one AND I could use your eyes for 5–10 min if you'd like to be helpful.

I've done the launch on the updated, multi-lingual & multi-device version of my font-spacing research test site. Please have a visit to letter.fit and take a look at a sample or two.

You don't have to be in #fonts #type or #typography — this is just "look at this sample, highlight things that stick out"; the value is in wide samples & lots of variety!

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD) is one month from today. Here's my 2022 GAAD article, still relevant today... and throughout eternity, across the galaxy: lflegal.com/2022/05/hitchhiker… #a11y

A few years ago, I made friends with one of the best waiters I've ever had in a restaurant in my life. I'm not sure if it's weird for me to say this, but this man is an angel on earth. I recently got wind that his wife has cancer, and they're trying to raze money to help keep their home, as well as pay for their children's activities while she recovers. I would be very grateful if you can donate, and I'm sure they would be too. gofundme.com/f/rzcz8u-cancer-f… @mutualaid #mutualaid #MutualAidRequest

Having recently joined us from Berlin as a full-time #Android developer, @wmontwe brings his passion for building mobile applications to the Thunderbird team. He’ll be helping to develop new features and an updated interface for K-9 Mail as we transform it into #Thunderbird for Android.

We talked about his first PC (and hacking on games to get them to run), what he hopes to accomplish for the Thunderbird mobile app, and how our community of contributors can help.

@druid You can submit an enhancement request on bugs.documentfoundation.org – But of course, we have very limited resources! So to get a new feature more quickly, please consider helping our community to implement it, or fund a developer: libreoffice.org/community/get-… 😊

Na to si posvítil pořad Bilance České Televize 📺.

Vyzpovídán byl @davidslizek i @jancibulka, nám se v dokumentu povedlo alespoň naťuknout téma digitálního vyloučení.

The mockup definitely informs the final Supernova design. And that "final" design may not materialize immediately upon release, but happen in stages throughout the Supernova cycle.

I think the biggest element still missing is multi-line message previews, and that's coming! We also have a lot of polish and prep to accomplish before 115 lands in July.

We've already started with a few popular options, but your contributions are always welcomed!

As we recap our fantastic #EverythingOpen talks, next up is William Brown @firstyear from @SUSE who walks us through #passkeys for #web #authn, showing us their ambiguities, how they work, what their limitations are, and what we need to be thinking about when we implement them.

Another fabulous talk from William.
