We are currently working on lysand.org
Its a project that aims to revolutinise the fediverse landscape, by developing a new protocol with a layer to allow instances to be backwards compatible to ActivityPub. We aim to solve many issues Activitypub has right now by keeping the standard well-defined, while activitypub is rather ill-defined.
If you want to support our work, feel free to head over to opencollective.com/lysand
Thanks for keeping the fediverse so awesome :Blobhaj_Ani_Hearts:

A Word of Advice if you
intend on using/trying Microsoft's newly announced Recall feature :windows: :

Be *extremely* careful with the data of others.

Recording your own data is one thing, but if you continuously use a feature that will record others on video conferences, chat conversations, and emails, without explicit consent, you could get in a lot of trouble.

Not only this can be extremely unethical (to say the least), but it could also expose you to serious legal consequences.

Remember:

1. Be careful: The use of this feature might not even be legal in some locations/situations/circumstances. If you use it, you should verify this first.

2. Consent should always be free, explicit, and revocable.

3. Once you collect the data of others, you become its guardian. You have a responsibility to secure it properly, for as long as you keep it. This is a heavy burden.

4. The easiest and safest course of action is to simply not collect this data in the first place.

In that sense, I highly recommend NOT using features such as Microsoft's Recall.

This is a data privacy disaster waiting to happen. For others, and for yourself.

Sounds like a bad joke but the EU governing council wants to once again legislate #chatcontrol for it's 350 million citizens. According to @echo_pbreyer (EU parlamentarian) the legislation wants to force messengers to prevent users from sending images or videos unless they agree them to be scanned, AI-analyzed and potentially reported to police. They apparently want to bring it up for a council vote in June and then negotiate it into a legally binding procedure in the EU patrick-breyer.de/en/let-yours…

@delegatevoid It is easy to bring lots of technical arguments why #chatcontrol is a bad idea. But even if it were technically possible, it would be a catastrophic idea. No government should have an automated surveillance capability built into all private communications -- and images and videos are very much a core part of private communications. Pushing for such automated surveillance of private communications arguably surpasses Iran, Russia and other countries's control efforts.

Who doesn't like free effects? And these are pretty exceptional by the way. Very accessible JUCE interface as well, works in any DAW, has a stand-alone app and exists for both Mac and Windows. Thanks to @jakobrosin for alerting me to this collection. Some of the nicest free reverbs I've ever come across, among other things.

in reply to simon.old

@simon There isn’t a list because the guy behind this has created over 300 effects. Previously they were just distributed as a giant zip of vst/AU plugins, but this “consolidated” plugin was partly made to make discovery easier because it has them categorised and the documentation pops up in the interface. I can second the recommendation for all the reverbs, some of the lofi and saturation stuff is great too.

It's too bad that a full hardware-based memory safety solution like CHERI (cl.cam.ac.uk/research/security…) didn't reach production in time to be included in Microsoft's Copilot Plus PCs, and other new hardware that's riding the AI hype train. As it is, if something like CHERI ever does catch on, we're going to have a second wave of hardware obsolescence when we could have had just one. Yes, CHERI is an academic project, but Microsoft and other industry players could have put more resources on it.

I didn't recognise that banning children from using smartphones will result in them losing access to music. :'(

I like seeing people copy the seirdy.one robots.txt and watching all the profanity I put in it spread across the web. It’s actually wonderful to see…

…but please change the sitemap URL at the end to your own site’s sitemap URL, or remove it. This is getting embarrassing.

New bookmark: Institute for the Study of the Neurologically Typical.

A parody of many neurotypically-biased initiatives feigning concern for autism, but treating it as a problem in need of a solution. This is an archive of a webpage first uploaded decades ago.

The amazing thing about Threads is that it 100% rewards rage bait.

The only way to get engagement there is to inflame the algorithm.

I have a tiny audience, but over 100 replies from people who are (justifiably) decrying my poll.

Vague references to domestic abuse, trafficking ment, Windows Recall

The best ways to improve opsec against coercion are to:

  • Limit what can be taken (reduce what’s stored on a device).
  • Fake what you do have: use duress passwords or secondary devices.
  • Last resort: use a hardware key that’s deliberately easy to lose or break, so there’s potentially no key to give up in a rubber-hose attack.

There’s overlap between the three. A duress password temporarily limits what’s stored on a device, and losing a decryption key is more or less the same as instantly wiping encrypted data to reduce what you have to offer. All come down to having less data to give when coerced into giving what you have. Operating systems should also obey this principle by storing as little offline data as possible, and providing duress safeguards for what must be stored.

Windows Recall captures an amount of offline telemetry comparable to parental-control apps often used to control human trafficking victims: the data encompass everything potential victims do on their machines, without any duress protections. Presenting such a feature as opt-out seems like it’s almost designed to hurt victims.

The decision-makers behind features like Recall, or invasive child-monitoring spyware, have likely never experienced this type of abuse. Or perhaps they are the abusive party at home.
