The Nazis killed my entire family except my great grandparents who came to the US.

Everyone, there were no survivors as far as anyone knows.

So if I say it's my opinion that Republicans are Nazis and I mean they are similar to the historical Nazis and might become as dangerous, I do actually know what I am talking about.

They plan to build concentration camps for 1 million immigrants. After they deport the first million what do they plan to do with those camps? You imagine they will just get rid of them? Hmm.

It has been three and a half months since I announced “I will make Papers – the soon-to-be default document viewer in GNOME – work on mobile, while improving the UI in general.”

For that, I was granted a stipend by Google Open Source. And, I would say: I delivered on this promise—see for your self, with the next release of Papers.

Now, my project is over (but I am here to stay), and if you want to read a bit more about what I did, I’ll humbly recommend my blog post: blogs.gnome.org/camelcasenick/…

If you have a raspberry pi 4 or 5 running Arch Linux, and after updating you suddenly have no wifi, this solution worked for me. Simple steps:

  • Create the file /etc/modprobe.d/brcmfmac.conf
  • Add the following line to the file:
    options brcmfmac feature_disable=0x82000
  • Save and reboot.

I've just been sitting here trying to play the synth riff from Axel F's Theme on clarinet in every key. I suck at it. The easiest for me are concert G miner, C miner and d miner. I can mostly manage everything else, but not at speed. That's my silly practice thing, I guess.

in reply to Patrick Perdue

I've known that riff since I was a kid but didn't know what the piece was called. Thank you.

You've taken a perfectly fine door and given it anxiety.

If the term "LI-FI" becomes a thing, expect all the "lie-Fi" puns. Oh, my LI-FI is lying to me about the speeds, it's definitely sus!

I really can't see it taking off though if it is can't go threw walls. I just can't see that working well.
in reply to JamminJerry

@JamminJerry yeah, it for sure won't replace internet with that limitatiion. I do think it has a good use case for hospitals, home automation, things that are better left more secure by not being as internet-connected from a distance, or need to pass high communication quickly across things.
in reply to Tamas G

I don't know. I still can't see it working even in places like that. I mean if the two devices are not in the same room, forget it. it won't work.
in reply to Tamas G

That article seemed more like a marketing copy. I rememberr the early research articles from the oughts. It seemed to be so promising.

in reply to Trending Stocks 📈

Is there any chance we can encourage you to trend #NVIDIA when that's the company you mean, please? I know what their NASDAQ handle is, but #NVDA is much more widely known as the name of the screen reader we make and the #NVDA hashtag is very widely used for the screen reader. It will save both our communities polluting each other's feeds. If you'd like to find out more about the screen reader, our website is nvaccess.org/ - Thank you!

in reply to D.Hamlin.Music

@dhamlinmusic It does, but hopefully a human checks it from time to time. It would benefit both the blindness community and the finance community to use clear hashtags
in reply to D.Hamlin.Music

@dhamlinmusic @NVAccess

definitely not automated - will keep it in mind! just not sure how I would use that as a canonical standard

in reply to Trending Stocks 📈

@dhamlinmusic Thanks for your help! To be honest, aside from about yourself, 99.9% of the time #NVDA is used to refer to NVIDIA stocks, it's spam / scam - I certainly wouldn't follow the hashtag for stock information - I'd follow the Stocks or Finance hashtags you also use. I'd be surprised if it's the only one - just looking back through, 99% of toots about SNOW are not about the stock - and that's what I was trying to do - ensure people following a hashtag get primarily ONE subject
in reply to NV Access

@NVAccess I thought we were mostly using NVDASR as the hashtag for NVDA? I started that on Twitter because stock related things regularly used the NVDA hashtag.
in reply to Jamie Teh

@jcsteh There weren't too many stock related things on here when we joined, so I've been trying to get the jump on them - no one actually calls NVIDIA #NVDA - it makes sense for them to use #NVIDIA if that's what they want to talk about. Most people are good with it, but I generally tag our posts with both #NVDA and #NVDAsr just in case
in reply to Jamie Teh

@jcsteh @NVAccess I don't think the average Mastodon user is big on AI investments. The distinct possibility of them gloating when the stock price tanks still exists, though.
in reply to James Scholes

@jscholes @jcsteh That was my reasoning for pushing the stock people to use the company name. If you use NVIDIA, there's no confusion - there is no other entity that I'm aware of called NVIDIA. And even though their code is NVDA, the screen reader IS much more widely known as NVDA. Users who have followed us post-twitter, might not actually know what NVDASR is. In any case, if we use NVDA and stock people use NVIDIA, then everyone can follow what they actually want - one, the other, or both

WhatsApp desktop: If you receive a link from a chat conversation, I notice that the link itself does not get placed in tab focus (update: It does, but your screen reader will repeat the message twice which was throwing me off), and I could not left-click it with NVDA, so how in the world do you activate links within WhatsApp desktop?
Solution: It will be in tab order, but you'll first need to hear the message repeated again before the link URL is told to you as the highlighted item.

in reply to Tamas G

Were you able to scan the QR code to link your device? I am using the web portal for now.
in reply to Chris Hallsworth

@challsworth2 ah I didn't have to, I used the code / link devices section of the WhatsApp mobile client where I could then enter that code manually without a QR one.
in reply to Tamas G

Sorted. Transpired you can only link with code on Windows or web; I have a Macbook Air, but I do plan to use Windows in a virtual machine again some day.
in reply to Tamas G

Or just press tab once, and it's a link. At least in my experience.

@we_are_spc I would check if you don’t have a virus of some sorts. That website shown on the error sounds very, very sketchy. Try to use ADWCleaner if you are on Windows.

Will do. But that is the only time I have had a problem with that particular thing. Everything else goes where it's supposed to.

... OKay this is effed up. I can't ghet to it from Google Chrome because of that shit you saw when I sent you the message. But when I type into MS edge...it works flawlessly. Don't ask me whly...I wouldn't be able to tell you. :( -T

All it does is give me a search deal. I've never dong a ping response before, so I dunno what I'm not doing. Especially since I coppied direectly what you sent to the clipboard.

Hello fediverse!

I need your help to feature all of the amazing services that are part of the #ActivityPub realm.

What are some of your favorite ActivityPub handles to follow on #Funkwhale, #Peertube, #Pixelfed, #Bookwyrm, #Wordpress, #Truefans, #Castopod, #Akkoma, #Friendica, #Lemmy and others?

Your replies will be categorized by @jejord, @AileenLalor, @miaq and @marci so that we can feature these accounts to our Flipboard users and work to ensure they render properly on Flipboard.

I'm excited to help evangelize the many great projects here and advocate for their adoption and funding.

#Catima 2.31.1 is out!

This is a very minor release, containing a community-contributed fix for the back gesture on the home screen dismissing both the keyboard and clearing the search. Long story short, you can now hide the keyboard without clearing the search, allowing for easier browsing of your cards.

It also contains some minor community-contributed cleanups.

Available now on #GitHub, very soon on #IzzyOnDroid and hopefully soon on other supported app stores.

Hypothetically, is there any interest in a D&D campaign on Fedi?

Also hypothetically, what's the best way to pick a weekly timeslot?

Update: to clarify, I'm open to other systems - Fate might work better for a text social media campaign. But D&D is a way bigger market.

One of my favorite surprises from researching the introductory chapter of "50 Years of Text Games" was how many women were integral to the tech and design work behind early computer games. Mabel Addis, Dorothy Kneeland Clark, Grace Hopper, Judith Harris, Alexis Adams, Myra Breen (not to mention queer folks like Christopher Strachey). Love to see more of these pioneers getting their (belated) due.

ARRL Pays $1 Million Ransom To Decrypt Their Systems After Attack yro.slashdot.org/story/24/08/2…

Prince of Persia 35th anniversary update: This week in 1989, I "finished" PoP. After three years of work creating the game (on an Apple II), it was time to let go.💾

I have trouble letting go. As my journal reveals, I went on secretly fixing bugs... Which is strictly verboten, after QA has signed off on a master disk. But I was confident my last little bug fixes wouldn't break anything, because my pal Roland and I would "test the hell out of them" ourselves.

You can guess where this is going.
