In the meantime, I have 2 bigs issues with Tuta app on ios. It freezes very often when I open an email and want to delete it or go back to inbox. But worst is that, if I receive an email while my phone is off or on flight mode, I am not notified when I am back online and that's really annoying. Much more than not being able to set tuta as default email app
We still see people on social media recommending OpenOffice. Just be aware that it's no longer getting updates, and has multiple year-old unfixed security issues: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_O… – To be safe, switch to one of the actively maintained successor projects (such as LibreOffice).

Please stop endorsing spreadsheet apps for anything else than spreadsheets. Better use applications for numerical computations like #NumeRe or #R, which produce understandable, mainainable and debuggable solutions.
I feel so guilty downvoting OpenOffice. It was a good friend, the people were ace, and for a while it had the only decent EPUB exporter plugin. I wrote my first book on it.

Gotta admit, OpenOffice is still in my heart because I used it back when it was version 1.1.0. Pure nostalgia, but LibreOffice doesn't evoke such a warm feeling of "Linux back then". On the other hand, LibreOffice is always reliable and stable.
I was amused to get a "new" computer at work last December, and the system image included an OpenOffice install from 2019. I replaced that one pretty quickly. 😛
The Apache Software Foundation offers a suite of office productivity software named Apache Open Office. Based on the download page, you would never guess the last major release of the software was made available in 2014.
They claim to maintain it, and if you look at the repository, there are updates all the time, but pretty much every single one of them are reformatting, some typo fixes, changes to formatting of documentation, etc.
You have to scroll way down before you find a single fix that actually changes the code.
Why are hey even spending the time doing this? The only explanation I have is that they have some contract where someone is paying them money for it to be updated, and they do the absolute bare minimum to avoid breaking the contract.
This, unfortunately, has had an extremely harmful effect on the open source community, who are best represented by libreoffice here.
I paged down page, after page, after page, and with maybe 3 exceptions, every. single. fix modifies code comments, change the character case of html tags.
What on earth is going on? Surely a human isn't assigned to make a few of these changes every single day? Or maybe the contract allows them to afford this?
@loke Exactly. People should contact apache@apache.org and ask them why they keep distributing OpenOffice despite the security issues, and pretend to keep the project alive with meaningless Git commits that remove whitespaces. Try contacting them!
@downey went from MSO to AOO to LiO right at the beginning and haven’t looked back. And with Collabora Office (though I’d prefer a straight-up iOS/iPadOS LiO) it’s nearly as seamless as iWork without the walled garden, which means I can use it on my recently #Linux-upgraded-from-Win10 old PC.
I am one of those people who are still recommending Apache OpenOffice. But there is a reason, I am not doing it randomly or for fun.
I work with people at rural schools, where they use old computers, mostly donated ones, and mostly offline. They need to use a fast, lightweight office suite, and even LibreOffice 7.6 is not lightweight enough for these situations. However, Apache OpenOffice 4.1 works PERFECT because it is certainly lighter.

@thunderbird Please consider setting android:allowBackup="true" on Android. Backups are an essential security feature. Without the ability to easily backup & restore data, it is extremely vulnerable to being destroyed or ransomed. Security is not just about preventing unauthorized access, it's also about protecting authorized access.

Currently, Thunderbird for Android sets a flag in its manifest that prevents it from being included in backups. My emails, and the client configs for my email providers, are some of the most important data on my device.

I composed a message while out and about, but the message didn't send because my mobile provider has ended up on #Spamhaus #XBL. The message sits in the #Thunderbird Outbox.
On getting home to my WiFi network (whose internet connectivity is provided by an entity which is not my mobile provider) and attempting to resend the message in the Outbox, the message still fails to send, with the same error. However any email composed and sent while on my home network is sent reliably.

A question about the different page option settings of accounts (friendica 2024.03). /settings/account/basic
Right now this page want's to merge from a standard personal profile page to kinda community profile page where only specific defined profiles can publish thru it's wall to the rest of the followers.
First thought was to stay as a single profile page, allow mutual friend relations to publish/write to this wall, and change all contacts that do not belong to the inner circle of profiles to followers only. Apparently this setting doesn't work, or doesn't work as expected. Security and privacy settings in: /settings
Is this a known issue or some kind of misinterpretation of this option?
Next possible option would be to choose to become a public community group page.
This option would imply a continuous attention to change every new contact to followers only, if in fact this would mean that the followers would not be able to publish to the group but receive publications. Also this setting would include the risk of being exposed to unexpected posts into the community of followers whenever the administration of the profile lags behind for some reason.
The option private group looks more promising in this regard and actually would be the same than being a personal profile page that checks new follow requests and than could change the setting to allow mutual friendship to post to the profiles wall or simply define a follower relationship. The [Experimental] notice, that actually exists like lot's of years already is a little bit confusing, or creates a certain reluctance to try this option. How experimental is this still as of now or could we perhaps ask the community to run a general test on all the options of the account settings in general together with a general feed back to sum this up and come to some definite setup, wording and explanations on the matter?

I think the fact that you find these tools particularly good at busting out unit tests suggests that we need to figure out how to make practical software testing less rote, less boilerplatey, such that lovingly crafting that code is actually worthwhile.

@vol4life8657 True, but at this point anything is better than what we had up until now which is nothing. There are definitely some unanswered questions like whether this is something you can turn on during initial setup or what languages are supported or how much it will read, but in the worst case you should be able to buy games through the web browser and at least launch them independently without having to memorize your home screen.
That is indeed a surprise, although it only mentions home menu and system settings. Will it be more like the early PS4 screen reader? We'll know in June I guess.
@ToniBarth I'm cautiously optimistic. The store can be a bit of a pain to navigate. And it looks like the UI is gonna remain the same for a while. That might mean purchasing on the website and navigating to a game on the unit. And of course, first party games might not have any accessibility whatsoever. Microsoft, Ubisoft and others will probably be the ones bringing the most came access to the table still. But like you said, that's more than we had yesterday. So I'll take it as a win
@matt @Ranger1138 The only ones I know about are Brok the investigator, I think this one is self-voicing, and Mortal Kombat 1, and that one is using the same really slow TTS that was standard before they released the update a few months ago... dunno which one it is TBH.

@Ranger1138 @ToniBarth I wonder if the Microsoft on-device TTS will be available to third-party developers on the Switch and Switch 2. I'm guessing not? Just trying to figure out what TTS engines might be readily available for that platform, in case, hypothetically, I wanted to do something in the accessibility space for consoles.
@matt @Ranger1138 @ToniBarth So there's a demo video on that page I linked, and it sounds like the TTS they're using is ReadSpeaker/NeoSpeech, just a very downsized version, the male voice sounds suspiciously like James. Readspeaker themselves have been offering their SDK for developers as a Unity and Unreal engine plugin, very likely it might get ported to the switch. It's also possible Nintendo will update the Switch SDK and expose the TTS functions, it's being used for other things like multiplayer chat to speech so it's not out of the question. But we probably won't know until a game actually uses it because afaik the SDK documentation isn't public.
I'm gonna try and get the Switch 2 when it comes out, I'm optimistic and wanna actually try it out, as I have never had a Switch before, and this is a good reason to try one out, to be one of those who will try it and basically give everyone feedback and a verdict on how well it works.
