@NVAccess I appreciate it's power every day. Even while abroad on holiday I tend to remote into my machine back home and answer emails and read books, just so that my virtual machine on Mac remains lightweight, and easy to shut down at a moment's notice. I never had that power using my previous screen-reader and it is one of the highlights for me personally. I have been on this NVDA journey since December 2022 when I switched from windows 7 to 10 and taught myself to use NVDA in a week because my previous SR was annoying me so much. I also thought well, if I'm changing screen-readers, might as well take the time to upgrade my OS as well, so I did.

Taking that a step further, I think one small, inexpensive, underpowered (by today's standards) machine can go pretty far with reasonably efficient software.
As I told Rachel at the time, and as I've mentioned here before, there was a BBS in my city (Wichita, Kansas) in 1995 that ran 65 lines on a single machine, some kind of high-end 486. I thought that was amazing back then. Now, with the right software, one could probably serve a few hundred concurrent users with real-time chat, games, etc. on a tiny consumer router.
I've often heard stories from older folks who I worked with when they first had jobs in the 90's. They would talk about how they ran most of the company from a single NT or Netware box, running directory services, mail, proxy server, etc. During the 2000's with security and reliability concerns this all changed of course and we've continued to find ways of efficiently packing in more services on a single box ever since.
For my home labs I've packed as much as possible into a single box, the rationale being that its mainly just me using it so I wouldn't ever need to scale out of a single box. I've kept to this for the past 20 or so years.

The problem was always that I tried explaining how using these tools together is actually nice, but then I stumbled over the rspack configuration, and there's no way to call its configuration nice. Or is there?

@Microplastics101 That's not very helpful feedback, Steve 😕 Millions of people use Impress so it clearly is "functional". Why not help the volunteers who give you a free office suite, with specific feedback (LibreOffice version, operating system, document format, what you're trying to do, what you can't do etc.) Otherwise we can't make any improvements with such curt and vague "feedback"...

This is a rough strawman I put together after various discussions I had during GUADEC 2023 on the future of the GObject type system, introspection, language bindings, and the GNOME application development platform.
Do any #blind people reading this either own the (expensive) Monarch tactile graphics device or have access to one through school or work? If so, is it at all open to third-party apps running on the device itself? Failing that, has anyone figured out the specs of the computer that's certainly inside it? It's expensive enough that it would be great if it could serve as a blind person's general-purpose computer.
My default assumption is that the Monarch is as locked-down as HumanWare's other Linux-powered Braille devices, like the Mantis and the Brailliant BI series. If so, that's a shame IMO.
I think there’s an SDK for it, but it isn’t publicly available. I don’t know whether this is expected to change, or what terms and conditions it is subject to. The Monarch runs Android 13 at the moment, on top of which is an entire collection of specialized applications (e.g., text and braille editors, Web browser, email client, tactile graphics viewer, etc.). The browser appears to be Chromium-based. The braille terminal capability supporting the communication protocol with screen readers was recently announced, and may perhaps be included in the next software update. The Monarch I have access to for purposes of a project doesn’t seem to have this capability installed yet. I’m not a Monarch expert, so please bear that in mind - still very much learning my way around it.
Lol it'll never be one's personal computer. It runs Android like the Braille Note Touch. I've not installed any third-party APK's but it definitely doesn't feel like a top of the line machine, at all.
@pixelate And, that's exactly the same system-on-chip as my little underpowered Quartz64 single-board computer that I've been using as a personal server, as I've posted about on here.
Yes, it appears that the Monarch just shows the output of the app's accessibility mode things one line at a time. This is even more apparent when reading on the web browser, where a bold or italics element is just ... put on a new line, separate from everything else, just like on a single line display.
@pixelate I wonder if Termux (termux.dev/en/), the terminal and Linux shell environment for Android, is at all accessible on there. It certainly wouldn't be in full multi-line Braille glory.
Oh I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, it does show multi-line Braille, it just follows the Android accessibility structure exactly. Like, 10 32-cell displays stacked on top of each other. I'm not sure how Termux would work. I know input from a Braille display on regular Android doesn't go through to Termux, so I might have to connect a keyboard to the Monarch to type commands.
I'm currently looking into getting a tactile graphics device for research stuff for my PhD and never heard of it before. I thought about getting the Graphiti Plus. Could you link me to the Monarch one in case that one looks more promising?
The braille transformation has begun… meet Monarch! Producing braille textbooks demands substantial time and funding, frequently resulting in delayed delivery of information to the students’ fingertips.
Sounds interesting, most likely less expensive than the Graphiti Plus which comes with 60 times 40 cells as far as I know. But it might still be worth a consideration.
I would never buy this thing. It's 18 thousand, the membrane feels like a condom, the graphics felt unrealistic even to the teacher at school showing it to me.
Since the original post on this thread is still being boosted, I'll summarize and opine a bit on the answers that @pixelate posted in the thread.
The Monarch is running Android 13, and it does allow third-party applications to be installed, apparently by installing APK files.
The hardware is a Rockchip RK3566 system-on-chip with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 CPU and 4 GB of RAM. That's roughly comparable to a Raspberry Pi 3, and coincidentally the same SoC and amount of RAM as my Quartz64 SBC.
@pixelate What I'm aiming to learn more about is what the Dot Pad can or can't do vs. the Monarch. I know the Monarch has more homegrown software but if the Dot has a suitable API, then it may be more appealing for the price. I know there is this. github.com/dotincorp/
The #Feyree charger for our #ElectricVehicle that I ordered a month ago has finally arrived. It charges up to 230V/16A across three phases. The current can be regulated and the charger can be controlled from #HomeAssistant over Wi-Fi. It comes with a wall mount. It could very much do the job of a wallbox for 1/3 of the price.
Ano, moje auto zvládne jen 230V/16A na dvou fázích. Respektive oficiálně je v tom autě jednofázová nabíječka do 32 A, ale je tam prý nějaký slučovač, který dokáže z 16 A na dvou fázích udělat 32 A na jedné. Díky tomu můžu nabíjet výkonem 7,4 kW. Nabíjení po třech fázích nemám tudíž u sebe vyzkoušené, ale papírově to má umět a jednofázová nabíječka by nabíjení po dvou fázích nedala. Když jsem to hodil do klasické jednofázové zásuvky, nabíjelo to jen po jedné fázi.
@electricCZ @TaS občas lituju, že na autě nemám jediný normální nabíjecí konektor a tudíž jsou mi podobné vychytávky odepřeny, protože kdybych měl kupovat redukce ze všeho na vše, tak mám kufr plný jen kabeláže. Takže zůstávám u občasného nabíjení 1.3kW na 230V, protože to už bylo k autu přibaleno 😔
@logout Proto jsem pořídil nabijelektromobil.cz/prenosny-… a vozím jedno zařízení, u kterého jen přepojuju koncovky dle potřeby. (Dokoupil jsem ještě Typ 2. Jiné zatím nebyly třeba.)

Já jsem po koupi auta potřeboval něco rychle pořídit a toto mi bylo doporučeno Ondrou, který dělá DodoTesla a měl Feyree taky rozebranou: dodotesla.cz/blog/nabijecka-fe… Těch nabíječek jsou v provozu v ČR už minimálně stovky a zatím žádný průšvih nebyl, takže si nemyslím, že je to reálně až takový průšvih. Ale jestli to má certifikace a shody, jsem nehledal a měl jsem. To mi vadí, že neplní, co mají, a jsou nekalou konkurencí. Kvůli tomu už bych si to znovu nekoupil.
Jinak já tím za 3/4 roku nabíjel asi 4x. Mám to jen na cesty. Doma mám wallbox Solax. To je sice taky čína, ale tohle by evropské certifikace mělo mít, protože se na to dostávají dotace a dělají revize.
@electricCZ @TaS je to nejspíš jednofázová nabíječka, která zvládne na vstupu až 400 V a to auto ji zřejmě zapojí mezi dvě fáze místo mezi fázi a N. V obou použitých fázích tedy teče přesně stejný proud, je to jeden obvod. Místo 230 V * (2*15) A je tedy výkon 400 V * 15 A.
@electricCZ @TaS jinak nazývat to zařízení na kabelu nabíječka je trochu terminologicky nešťastné, když nabíječka je až to zařízení v autě. Jak to ale nazvat?
@TaS @electricCZ určitě ne, tam žádný regulátor není. Regulaci výkonu dělá nabíječka v autě na základě instrukcí předaných po vodiči označeném Control Pilot.
@Oskar456 @electricCZ @TaS Aha, já myslel, že to má v sobě proudový transformátor, ale to by byl asi dost overengineering. Bez vytáček přiznávám, že v elektru jsem dost laik. 🙂
jsou tam malé transformátorky na měření proudu, ale jinak jsou to pouze dráty. Hezky je to vysvětleno, jako vždy, tady: youtu.be/RMxB7zA-e4Y?si=FEYGP_… To, jakým výkonem se auto bude nabíjet, nastavuje auto, ta krabička to jen tomu auto signalizuje po jednom z těch tenkých drátků.

@Cooba13 Kupoval jsem to na Ali. Vyšlo to na 4 tisíce a je to přímo od Feyree. Na Allegru to je od prekupnika a za 6,5. Zatím spokojenost až na jednu věc: čudlík na konektoru, který se strká do auta, který měl ukončovat nabíjení, udělá nějaký s autem nekompatibilní signál, takže auto se přepne do nouzového nabíjení a k ukončení nedojde. Není tam žádný jiný fyzický vypínač, takže musím buď vypínat z auta nebo přes aplikaci. Jinak vzdálené ovládání je přes Tuya, z čehož taky nejsem nadšený, ale v HA to aspoň funguje s "local Tuya", takže člověk nepotřebuje čínský cloud.
@Cooba13 Jo, zaplatil jsem cenu inzerovanou na Ali a pak už po mně nikdo nic nechtěl. Balík dovezl pošťák jako jakoukoliv jinou zásilku. Ali už to dnes musí promítat do cen a proclení řešit na jejich straně.

Neat! There's a Quick Share app made with Libadwaita on Flathub now, called "Packet".
This means you can now natively send and receive files with Android's "Quick Share", without installing anything on a phone. (It can also send/receive files with another Linux desktop computer using the "Packet" app on both.)
Much of the support for renationalising the railways was grounded in the hope that state ownership would reduce rail fares (which are among the highest in Europe);
however, it now seems that will be unlikely, as any extra cash saved by nationalisation will be spent on maintenance, infrastructure & increased services (which in fairness are also what the network needs).
But as fares are what voters most immediately experience, how will this play out?
While I'd love cheaper fares, more services and better infrastructure - I'm not convinced - as an occasional user of European trains - that British railways are as bad or as expensive as we make out.
Certainly if you rock up to the station today and expect to go to the seaside NOW you will be paying a LOT of money, but plan ahead (& buy a railcard) and there are a lot of affordable tickets to choose from.
We don't suffer from Germany's creaking infrastructure leading to huge delays and cancellations, or French mad timetables, bonkers luggage rules or surly staff.
