So I've been working on a little thing. It's an add-on for #NVDA. It's a mastodon archiver. The idea is to press NVDA+M to start archiving. so if you're on someone's profile on your web browser, using this add-on would work. Everything will be saved in the app data/roaming folder. Inside the folder, there will be a folder called mastodon archiver. Inside that will be the folder of users. All their posts will be written in text format, and there will be a folder for media, which includes images, video and audio. Here's the only problem. I made the Python file needed, and the add-on.ini file. I put all this code in the folder. Then I zipped it, and instead of being a zipped file, it's an .NVDA add-on file. Problem is, instead of installing it, it says it fails to open the add-on package. Not sure what I'm doing different here. Yes I'm still learning it. Oh yeah, one more thing. It will announce when it's starting, and when it has stopped the archival process.

We love a new add-on :) And this is ..... definitely not something we would have considered as part of the screen reader itself - but that's the beauty of the community :)

Re the issue though, i'm not sure offhand, but this would be a good question for the add-on email group: nvda-addons.groups.io/g/nvda-a…

in reply to Jonathan

Do you want screen curtain for specific programs OR temporarily since you are working late at night? Reading download.nvaccess.org/document… - if you press NVDA+control+escape once it will enable screen curtain until you restart NVDA (so, for this instance). If you press it twice quickly, it will enable it until you turn it off (so it will still have screen curtain on when you turn the PC and NVDA back on tomorrow for instance).
in reply to NV Access

@NVAccess Hi, thanks for the info. What I was talking about, and sorry for not formulating it more clear in the 1st post, was something like enable screen courtain for a specific display. I'm sitting at a docking station having 3 displays attached (including the Laptop) I'd like to only courtain the Laptop screen, for example. Hope that made it more clear.
I'd then, for instance, move my browser to that Screen/Display using Win+Arrows.

My notes on OpenAI's gpt-5-codex model, now available via their API - I upgraded my llm-openai-plugin to handle it and had GPT-5-Codex itself implement tool support for that plugin simonwillison.net/2025/Sep/23/…

Scam alert!

If you have a Github account, you may have received an email which supposedly comes from the startup accelerator Ycombinator, encouraging you to apply for their new open source funding program, conducted in collaboration with GitHub. THIS IS A SCAM!!!

According to the email, applying requires you to send a deposit in crypto. Given how convincingly and professionally the email is written, as well as Yc's recent interest in stablecoins, it almost feels legit. It is not.

Under the hood, the email is actually a new issue notification, mine was under ycombbinator/-co (notice the double b). This is what gave it away as a scam for me.

Since the email is an actual Github notification and is really coming from Github's servers, it passes through Gmail's spam filters just fine. This is what makes this scam so pernicious.

Please boost for reach.

After listening to about a dozen first-hand accounts, I’ve published what I know so far about the RubyGems takeover.

I agree entirely with Lauren's statement:

> Given Google's enthusiastic embrace of MAGA, I do not consider my past statements applauding the security and privacy of user information at Google to be reliable guidance moving forward from now.

(from mastodon.laurenweinstein.org/@…)

I worked at Google for nearly 10 years and while there, I watched from afar[1], how much care the teams that deal with customer data put into keeping it all safe and stay clear of abuses of such data. Yes, really.

As such, my verdict was that putting data in Google's hands maybe isn't the greatest idea (especially if you have the means to self-host, for example), and to be wary of lock-in and network effects, but that it was a solid if you need stuff online and all that computery stuff scares you.

I don't even mind too much that they let the Covid-denialists and US-election-liars back onto YouTube, which is what Lauren's post is about.

But the politicization of that act ("Biden made us do it!") aligns them not with some kind of freeze peach conviction but that Alphabet willingly aligns with a regime that is at the very least proto-fascist.

[2]Showing up at the inauguration? Throw up in your mouth and get it done, if that's what the business requires (there must be _something_ that justifies Sundar's salary, after all, and it can't be his leadership.)

But this? Entirely self-inflicted, and on their own volition.

New guidance: Get away from there as fast as you can.

[1] By specialization and by deliberate choice I never got close enough to anything that had enough memory to deal with significant amounts of user data. Still don't.

[2] After a decade of mandatory public school history classes in Germany, where that topic was on repeat for Reichlich reasons, I'm still not quite sure where the boundary is. Suffice to say, the banality of evil (to quote Hannah Arendt) is kinda obvious in what's going on in the US these days.

***** WARNING REGARDING GOOGLE/ALPHABET *****

#Google (#Alphabet) is reinstating the worst of #YouTube creators who were "permanently" banned for COVID-19 and election integrity misinformation. Alphabet is now saying "Biden made them do the bans."

Clearly, billionaire CEO Sundar -- who we've seen palling around with Trump of course -- has gone full MAGA. Google is purposely conflating -- that is, purposely confusing -- necessary moderation to protect people and elections from masses of misinformation designed to mislead them, often in devastating ways -- from censorship created to suppress specific valid points of view.

There is an enormous difference -- Sundar and his Alphabet minions know this full well. They also know that their Gemini AI is a source of often dangerous misinformation on a planetary scale, and it's likely this has also entered into their recently (in a letter to Congress) announced changes.

Given Google's enthusiastic embrace of MAGA, I do not consider my past statements applauding the security and privacy of user information at Google to be reliable guidance moving forward from now. I have no confidence that Sundar would not quickly (or ultimately) agree to virtually any demands made by the Trump administration, however invasive or illegal they might actually be.

I do not have specific recommendations for alternatives to Google or their services, so please don't ask me for them! But I do recommend keeping the obvious shift in Google's behavior in mind, and you would be wise to assume that they are fully and completely in bed with fascist Trump in many ways -- or soon will be -- absent clear and convincing evidence to the contrary.

If Google/Alphabet wishes to discuss any of this with me and point out any errors in my analysis, they know my email address.

Take care, all.

The World's 2.75B Buildings in QGIS!

The United Nations (UN) believes there are 4B buildings on Earth. This week, a dataset called "GlobalBuildingAtlas" (GBA) was published by researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) that attempts to estimate this number at being closer to 2.75B

This morning, during some chaos, this zipped by on one of my feeds. Maybe it was here? Maybe it was BlueSky? Hard to overstate how much this made my day.

New angle on the j. Impersonation of Chriss Duffley. The one I found is C@patesadon.com. If anyone tries to follow you and has a ratio like that, hundreds of friends and 0 followers, especially with single-letter names, and even further especially if they find it necessary to pick on Mabelin R out of the blue and/or mention the global voice, you know who it is.

The 10GW data center deal between #Nvidia and #OpenAI seems even crazier when you put it into perspective. Czechia, home to 11 million people and an industrialized economy, has an average electricity consumption of 7 GW. The government subsidizes electromobility and encourages people to insulate their houses, yet it allows this. I hope the #AI bubble bursts before it causes real environmental damage.

@ppatel @chikim And now we’ve finally gotten a Web Search API, ollama.com/blog/web-search#bui…. Good move!
Also, I tried a few cloud LLMs and the latency is quite nice! :)

Genuine question to folks who were on iOS 18 and are now on 26,who use voiceover, how does your battery hold up? Mine doesn't hold up well with VO on, tbf. Watched a movie with my sister, and it went down nearly 32 or so percent, but no VO on, so I wondered. Also had bluetooth and airdrop off, and brightness at 100% I don't turn off bluetooth, because airpods connect, and I don't turn off airdrop, because I send things to other devices. Any thoughts on that?

Here it is, my new, self-hosted home in the #Fediverse running on #GoToSocial! This is really exciting stuff, now I’m truly living the Fedi spirit by supporting decentralization. If you're reading this and don't mind, I'd greatly appreciate a boost of this post to help my tiny new instance discover more servers. Thanks! #NewFedi #FediAdmin #Selfhosting

Thanks so much for clarifying and for the explanations! I was under the impression that boosting would indeed result in my server pulling in more posts from other instances, but I guess that was a misconception on my part having seen others doing this after spinning up a new server. I did follow many of the people who boosted though as a way to say thank-you, so perhaps this actually did help extend my server's reach by extension :-). GTS does not support relays yet sadly, although it is on their roadmap, I only realized it after I'd already configured most things so there was no turning back. That being said though, I do feel GTS is absolutely the right choice for my single-user scenario, setting up Mastodon or one of its forks would likely be overkill for my small Fedi home. That being said, I did find this project which seems interesting, maybe I should look into setting this up: codeberg.org/tante/hypebot
