This sounds like plugging a service to an LLM is a way of doing away with UX people. Just hope that the word salad will somehow match what the service's (invariably badly written) human-readable descriptions of its API, because if you don't have to pay an UX and front-end team to ADD A BUTTON TO TURN THE LIGHTS OFF then it must be a win.
(I am not criticizing this person's experiments, which are fine, but the larger scheme of things.)

My friend @TheQuinbox has been working on an ebook reader for blind people called Paperback (github.com/trypsynth/paperback). So far it's all written in C++, using wxWidgets as the GUI toolkit. Now Quin is working on making it a Rust/C++ hybrid, with the UI still in C++ using wx. As far as we know, the Rust GUI ecosystem isn't nearly ready to support a desktop app like this, with perfect screen reader accessibility and native-feeling keyboard behavior.
Quin says Paperback uses the following widget types: "a menu bar, a tab control/notebook, rich edit, a tree view, both single and multi-column listviews, checkboxes, spinners, combo boxes, and a few others".
So, Rust GUI toolkit developers, we have a lot of work to do. I can implement the necessary things in AccessKit, and contribute to one toolkit, but I can't fill this gap alone.
Just noticed Dioxus 0.7 is out. Their Blitz native renderer is mentioned in the release notes as a WebView alternative, and specifically calls out accessibility support. They also publish a bunch of unstyled widgets that seem to be at least partially accessible.
I haven't investigated either of these, other than poking at their widget samples and noting at least some ARIA support, but plan to soon. My current Dioxus projects are all web-based, but Blitz is definitely on my radar now for native.
That said, I don't know whether Paperback's widget subset is supported, but my hope with something like Blitz is that we could get a web-like experience without some of WebView's papercuts (E.g. no saving/restoring of cursor position) and that implementing new widgets is easier in something like RSX.

Ich dachte ja eigentlich, der ki-kompass-inklusiv.de sei trotz des Involements der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen ein ganz akzeptables wichtiges gutes Projekt, aber die machen immer mehr Käse und erzählen mittlerweile genau denselben Quatsch wie die großen LLM-Labore.

Just out of curiosity, if you use your own email client and send GPG/PGP encrypted email, how does an email provider decrypt it?
Sometimes encryption is a necessity even if privacy isn't an issue. Example: I've used encryption to send a JAR file to a friend for testing: he had a gmail account and Google doesn't allow JAR files as email attachments to "protect the user". This hid it from Google's software. It wasn't really secret - the password was in the email's text.
Remember the Fichenpolizei from back in the 1990s in Switzerland? It was a personal data collection scandal at the time I was based there for a brief time.

@realn2s Nein, ganz so ist es nicht. Die Menschen müssen vorsprechen, damit klar ist, dass Sie "ihren gewöhnlichen" Aufenthalt tatsächlich im Zuständigkeitsbereich der Jobcenter haben. Und nicht jeder psychisch Kranke ist nicht erwerbsfähig und nicht jeder theoretisch erwerbsfähige psychisch Kranke wird von den Jobcentern in den nächstbesten Job vermittelt. Oft vermitteln die Jobcenter auch Hilfsangebote, angefangen von der Information zu möglichen Leistungen der sozialen Teilhabe, über spezielle Massnahmen zur Erhöhung der Belastbarkeit, über Kontakte zu Beratungsstellen und Selbsthilfeorganisationen. Aber solche Angebote können nur unterbreitet werden, wenn gespräche zustande kommen. Ein riesiges Problem ist es, wenn die Krankheit sich so äussert, dass überhaupt keine Kontakte mehr möglich sind. Dass Briefe nicht geöffnet werden, Termine grundsätzlich nicht wahrgenommen usw. Denn dann geht das Jobcenter davon aus, dass der Mensch nicht am Ort anwesend ist und die Anträge werden abgelehnt bzw. nicht weiter bearbeitet. Geprüft, in welcher psychischen Verfassung jemand ist, wird unter Umständen vom berufspsychologischen Service und vom ärztlichen Dienst der Agentur für Arbeit und dort ist das Personal auch dafür ausgebildet. Es stimmt nicht, dass jeder, der gerade psychisch nicht in der Lage ist, eine Arbeit aufzunehmen, sofort keine Leistungen mehr bekommt. Das ist eine Fehlinformation.
@realn2s Danke, dass du das richtigstellst! Ich finde das wahnsinnig wichtig. Es ist natürlich einfach, sich über die JC aufzuregen und sie zu verteufeln. Sie bieten ja auch in weiten Teilen viel Angriffsfläche. Aber es ist eben nicht so schwarzweiß, wie insbesondere bei Mastodon gerne getan wird.
@WestphalDenn @realn2s Das ist es definitiv nicht. Es ist wenig bekannt, wie in den Jobcentern zum Beispiel in der Arbeitsvermittlung wirklich gearbeitet wird. Welche Netzwerke und Instrumente es gibt und wie sie angewandt werden. Es gibt bestimmt viel Grund zur Kritik, z.B. daran, dass es eigentlich immer darum geht, die Kunden zu optimieren und viel zu selten, die Strukturen in Unternehmen hinterfragt werden. Und an Prioritäten und manchen Massnahmen, die weit an Bedarfen vorbei gehen. Und natürlich gibt es in Jobcentern auch schwarze Schafe, die sich wenig bis gar nicht um Empatie scheren. Aber es gibt auch eine Menge anderes. Davon ist leider wenig bekannt.
@realn2s Ich habe das im Studium auch gemerkt. In den Sozialrechtsvorlesungen hatte ich einie Dozentin, die einige Jahre im Jobcenter gearbeitet hat. Zuerst war ich sehr skeptisch. Habe ich doch wirklich schlechte Erfahrungen gesammelt und diese für die Norm gehalten. Aber dieser Austausch zeigte ein anderes Bild. Keineswegs ein fehlerfreies, aber ein deutlich anderes. So sehr ich die Frustration verstehe, so sehr versuche ich immer mal wieder dafür zu werben, dass Sachbearbeitende nicht dafür eingestellt werden, es Leistungsempfangenden schwer zu machen. Aber natürlich gibt es im Sozialrecht viel Luft nach oben. Das ist, denke ich, auch jedem klar.
@WestphalDenn @realn2s Die Sachbearbeitenden müssen ein Lsetz vertreten. Ob sie hinter diesem Gesetz stehen, ist zweitrangig. Sie müssen sich an dessen Rahmen halten. Aber sie haben auch ein Stück Ermessen. und das Gesetz hat Nischen. Es weiss zum Beispiel kaum jemand, dass der ärztliche Dienst der Agentur für Arbeit jemanden als für bis zu 6 Monate nicht erwerbsfähig einschätzen kann. und dass dann einfach nichts Leistungsrechtliches passiert. Die betreffende persön ist damit quasi für 6 Moate wie Krank geschrieben und bekommt ihre Leistungen ganz normal weiter. Es ist auch kaum bekannt, dass man aufstockend zum Krankengeld Leistungen vom Jobcenter erhalten kann und dass wenn Krankenscheine eingehen, auch über lange Zeit, ebenfalls keine Leistungen wegfallen. Irgendwann leitet das Jobcenter natürlich die Begutachtung durch die Fachdienste ein, um zu prüfen, ob es als Leistungsträger der Grundsicherung für Erwerbsfähige noch Zuständig ist, oder ob der Leistungsträger für Nichterwerbsfähige, also SGB XII zuständig wird. Aber es gibt viele vorübergehend (auch langfristiger) kranke Leistungsbezieher im Jobcenter, die trotzdem generell erwerbsfähig bleiben, man hofft ja immer auf Genesung...

What are the benefits for Geany of porting it to GTK4?
The editor/IDE #Geany is still #GTK3 and the hampering factor was that the editing engine #scintilla wasn't ported to GTK4 but it exists now. However, one of the main developers questions, if there are any benefits at all in porting Geany to GTK4:

the benefits of using GTK4 boil down to using a toolkit that gets new features, better performance, and integration on Linux (and other platforms); the downsides are the usual: porting is an effort, and if the current maintainer doesn’t want to spend their time on it, then there’s not much anybody can do, regardless of benefits
also: GTK4 has been out for 5 years, more than a third of the GTK3 lifetime. We’re way past the point in which we have to “sell it” to people. If in 2025 you’re still using GTK3 because you like having icons on menus then you clearly made a choice
@whitemice I also think that Geany is an excellent application. As fast and tabbed editor with powerful features, I don't see so many alternatives on Linux. Thus, it would be great if Geany would decide that it wants to do the shift to GTK4. Otherwise, it will become outdated and less relevant in the future. @eht16 To given an overview of the current state of #GTK4 adoption. Out of the active GTK open source projects 71% use GTK4, and 29% still use #GTK3 as of today (#GTK2 not counted). This is an increase of 9 percentage points since Nov 2024. This means that GTK4 will likely crack 90% of active #GTK projects in 2028 (and probably plateaus at such share).
Additionally, 90% of GTK4 projects use #libadwaita (#Gnome), and 6% of GTK3/GTK4 projects use #libgranite.

Ich bewege mich eher selten🤭 in akademischen oder aktivistischen Kreisen und spreche nicht vor Publikum von einer Bühne herab in einem Plenum oder bei Veranstaltungen. Mein Umfeld setzt sich aus Schicht-/Arbeiter*innen (ÖPNV, Lager- und Transportwesen, Baugewerbe, Dienstleistungen) und unbezahlten Care-Arbeiter*innen - meist Frauen "natürlich" - zusammen. Schlagworte, politische Parolen, theoretische Konstrukte sind leere Schüsseln für die meisten Menschen, mit denen ich zusammenkomme.
Sie ernähren keine Kinder, heizen die Wohnung nicht und schneiden unseren Kranken und Alten nicht die Fuß- und Fingernägel, während im Nebenzimmer das Baby aufgewacht ist, die Katze auf den Teppich kotzt und der Partner/die Partnerin anruft um Bescheid zu geben, dass sie/er Überstunden machen wird, um die Zusatzkosten für die neue Waschmaschine aufzufangen und es darüber hinaus sowieso später wird, weil einige Zugverbindungen ausfallen, oder es Probleme mit dem Auto/dem Fahrrad gibt.
Darüber hinaus wird „Normalsterblichen“ von gesellschaftspolitischen Vordenker*innen unermüdlich das Gefühl vermittelt, ungebildet und unterentwickelt zu sein, weil die Inhalte, die sich hinter den wohlfeilen Ausführungen der "intellektuellen Elite" verbergen, ganz selbstverständlich vorausgesetzt, aber so gut wie nie entschlüsselt und konkret mit Leben gefüllt werden, weil ... das könnte mensch doch alles längst wissen, wenn mensch sich doch nur mal interessieren und schlau machen würde.
Can someone actually - I mean really - explain why airports equate disability assistance so strongly with wheelchairs? I genuinely don't understand how pushing a wheelchair is easier than, say, sighted guide. Some have said it might relate to training, but sighted guide doesn't require a lot of training, if any. Is there something I'm missing? This is all completely aside from the fact that this shouldn't be about their convenience over my preferences, but that's not the point for this question.
As was explained to me once, liability. Putting a person in a wheelchair is least risky — customers cannot claim they tripped, walked into a wall, went the wrong way, didn’t hear the beeping of a cart, etc. Also, no need to train staff to understand different disabilities (cost again).
I do have a blind friend that I watched tell off airport staff when they brought the wheelchair for her, and they backed down. Obvs your mileage may vary.
@aardrian I used to be one of those who would fight it every time it came up, because I could walk perfectly well, thank you very much. It almost always worked out in my favor.
These days, I actually can't deal with most terminals, unless it's a particularly small airport for various reasons.
But, yes, these arguments are what I've heard in the past.
@aardrian I would've thought the liability would be pretty high for wheelchairs too though, given that the staff member is entirely in control of that. But I guess maybe being entirely in control allows them to say they've mitigated the risk because they hold all the cards?
I suspect the liability is the same, at which point it comes down to a numbers game of training staff to know how to guide folks across disabilities versus stuffing a human into a chair. The latter is cheaper and reduces variables.
@aardrian @jyarbrough Yeah, I pushed back as I usually do and they backed down, but only after telling me it was "easier for them if I used the chair". As if my personal preferences are secondary to their convenience.

As far as I understand it, it's the same reason that they always want to take me into an elevator, even if walking as sighted guide. Less liability. SOmeone in a wheelchair can't trip.

the argument I hear that it's simply faster. Like, not all blind people can walk fast, and not all blind people *saying* they can, can do it in reality. I don't agree, that's simply what I heard.
Mileage probably varies here with this one, but in my experience the wheelchair's got a luggage cart built in, so if coming to/from baggage claim it's probably a stability assurance for all involved. Pure speculation, but were that the case it would at least mkae sense from a practicality standpoint, even if it's an annoyingly one-size-fits-all approach.
At least at airports in the US, now they make it about being understaffed and they kind of make you feel like a horrible person if you try to just say you can walk.
@technocounselor Legality. If someone is leading you sighted guide and you trip, or they crash you into something dangerous, or any number of things, they're terrified you'll sue.
I wouldn't be surprised if cost-saving was at least part of the reason. They don't know how fast you can walk, and many people needing assistance cannot walk that fast. The faster you can move, the more passengers one assistant can service per shift. If you're stuck in a wheelchair, you always move at the assistant's walking speed.
This is probably also the reason why they let you go through the staff-only passageways.
purely speculation with no data to back it up but I think almost alll the requests they get are for people who want to use a wheel chair to go to the gate so they figure that all of them are like that.
@pixelate The notion that one should actually consult the recipient of services to see what that recipient wants is a foreign concept especially out of the US where I live. nd in some places in the US too. One story: I was in oHare and had a connection to make. I'm short, in ok shape but no athlete. The assistant was tall and knew what he was doing. He convinced me to accept the wheelchair, that he could do it faster that way. In fact, he did.
I read somewhere that apparently it's something to do with insurance. If the chair breaks while you're in it, or they walk you into something, they can claim for it or some crap. If you're being guided and they make you trip over something sharp and you slice your face to the bone, you can sue them... How true any of that was, and where I read it I cannot tell you, so consider this unfounded nothingness.

Hello there...every day that I use Mastodon, I like to list three things that I like as a contribution towards a positive online space, as well as my own headspace. If you did this today, what would feature on your list?

I've just been informed by Apple TV on my phone that there is a new episode of Pluribus. Yes, the episode that came out on Thursday that I watched last night. GOOD JOB telling me that just now.
Yup, it's weird. I get informed for new eps of everything at 18 (UTC +1) or so even though the episode gets out at 3. I don't expect to be informed at 3, but at, like 9, would be good enough.
@JesseF8693 The best was when I got a text notification for my flight that was delayed ... after I'd landed from said delayed flight. I'd say what was delayed was their notification on that one.
@walkside3 @JesseF8693 I once got a notification that my flight had been canceled a day later, after I took the same flight the next day which had been rescheduled.

Is that not a beverage can? US beverage cans have pull tabs like that. Well, most do. The braille label is good. I've noticed some European medicine boxes I've gotten have a bare amount of braille like that on them.
Do they have pull tab tops on canned foods? The US doesn't have that as much although it exists for some mixed nuts and fried onions cans...
@meganL The difference I notice is that little indentation at the "pull" end of the pull tab, which seems like it would make it a lot easier to get a finger under the tab.
