Note to @thunderbird: I hope you'll consider adding mastodon to your web page share links so one isn't forced to chop up the form email to include the correct screen name.

In my talks and discussions about the role of Open Source maintainers, I usually list a number of reasons why maintainers might quit or otherwise reduce their involvement.

"The Russian army destroyed my house" hasn't been on that list yet 😐 🇺🇦

Better to take some more time to prepare a proper release – looking forward to it and kudos for keeping Thunderbird on @fdroidorg.

Still, any news about future encryption options, especially via #OpenPGP? Pretty much all #Android email clients rely on #Openkeychain to manage all your keys. Sadly it is still unmaintained and desperately needs a replacement or someone to take over development. Look at issues like this: github.com/open-keychain/open-…
#Thunderbird for Android will also rely on this unmaintained app.

🎙️ Cox Media Group's Active Listening Technology is being used to collect to your conversations and use them to push ads. 😱

CMG boasted, "This is a world where no pre-purchase murmurs go unanalyzed, and the whispers of consumers become a tool for you to target, retarget, and conquer your local market." 🎯

Don't make yourself an easy target for predatory advertising agencies, choose #privacy respecting solutions instead!🔒💪

That's why we need lot more independent systems on mobile platforms, such apps as well and open, transparent, and well audited code. Open source is a must have those days. There's no excuse anymore. Especially when we are handled like a bunch of cows or even digital slaves after the 9/11 by all the IT world ruling corpos, govs etc. Without that very fast we all will be sitting ducks totally helpless.

I am super excited about this mini-conference on #reproducibility in #linguistics that I am organising this evening: Four of my M.A. students will be reporting on their attempts to reproduce the results of four published quantitative linguistics papers for which the data is available, but not the code!

Colleagues, they have *a lot* of things to report! So, if you're in the area (Cologne), do come along! There will be #ReproducibiliTea and Christmas biscuits! 🍵 🍪 #OpenScience

Glad to see that #libssh2 is on top of things adding #terrapinattack mitigation github.com/libssh2/libssh2/pul…

Fialova vláda čelí souběhu krizí a frustrované společnosti. Odráží se to v jejím hodnocení i klesajících preferencích některých jejích stran. Kabinet zatím může uklidňovat, že se zklamaní podporovatelé nepřesouvají k opozici, ale spíše mezi nevoliče. #fiala #fialovavlada

Keyboard accessibility myths and WCAG (10min) “WCAG itself doesn't require that each and every interactive control is keyboard accessible. Rather, WCAG only requires that the functionality associated with a task can be completed using the keyboard alone. In some cases, this may mean providing additional ways that will allow people who cannot use a mouse, touch, or a similar pointing device to complete the task.”

A poll: if you're planning on blocking Threads , do you want your posts to federate there so that hate groups can interact with them and Meta can track you?

The way blocking works on Mastodon, if your instance hasn't enabled "authorized fetch", blocking Threads won't actually prevent your posts from federating there if somebody on another instance who hasn't blocked Threads boosts your post. This means that anybody on Threads can still potentially see your posts, including hate groups like Libs of TikTok and Gays Against Groomers. And Meta's privacy policy says they'll use the information to target advertising and improve their products by training AIs. And most large Mastodon instances today haven't turned on authorized fetch.

If you're planning on -- or considering -- blocking Threads, do you still want your posts to federate there?

#meta #threads #fedipact #fedimeta @fediverse @fediversenews

  • No. Blocking means blocking (74%, 109 votes)
  • Yes. That's how things should work! (3%, 5 votes)
  • I don't care either way (3%, 5 votes)
  • I'm not even considering blocking Threads, so it doesn't apply to me (11%, 17 votes)
  • Not sure (6%, 10 votes)

Resolved: Microsoft Outlook Blocking All Email from @tutanota.com Domain as Spam.

tuta.com/blog/outlook-falsely-…

This is just another example of how much power Microsoft has. But sometimes I'm not sure they really know what they're doing.

Anyway, dealing with Windows email users (businesses and individuals) can be a nightmare.

If you plan on using your own email server, sooner or later you'll be playing this game too.

You can burn a library, or you can add in thousands of books with garbage. Both will render it useless.

And guess what? AI is _great_ at making garbage - very _convincing_ garbage, but still garbage. And it seems like this has begun to choke Facebook.

It's kind of uncool that the Terrapin Attack on the ssh protocol (CVE-2023-48795) affects ChaCha20-Poly1305 in particular, which I assume is widely used by now...

Named Vulnerability announcement page: terrapin-attack.com

SuSE recommends disabling that cipher and MACs using encrypt-then-MAC (suse.com/support/kb/doc/?id=00…). PuTTY has some additional info in chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtath… - according to that (and the Terrapin FAQ), disabling CBC encryption algorithms should be another possible workaround.

...well, that, or updating to current releases of ssh implementations (did not check the backport situation yet).
